Poker on a Mac?

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

So I finally gave into temptation and bought a Mac...

I'd been curious for years, ever since being made to use Macs at university for calculating psychological experiment statistics. I both loved and hated that Apple logo and the strangely coloured plastic machines. Hated because I hated that stats subject... Loved because of the aesthetics and sense of style and usability that Mac products represent. That's apparently why the Psych department swore by them all those years ago - they were easy to use.

I loved my iPod too. It's easy to use and just works. I loved iTunes too - it took over from trusty old Winamp as my default music player some time ago. So I figured it was time to take the plunge and become a fully fledged Mac fan.

And I'm glad I did. Except for one aspect... My poker options have diminished.

When I got the Mac I made the resolution that no matter what, this was going to be a Microsoft free machine. I am looking at it as an experiment of sorts. Can I go without Microsoft and PC products entirely?

I knew that I would never be able to give up on the PC for work. Everything is a word doc or an excel spreadsheet - it's just too hard to be a purely Mac guy at the office. So the Mac is primarily my home machine - hence the problem as home is where I play poker...

Full Tilt Poker has been my friend. Their built-for-Mac client is awesome. To my knowledge it's the only purely Mac option for online poker at the moment. Some places have the browser version you can use, but they're just not the same as having the software installed, so Tilt is getting all of my business at the moment!

PokerStars is also reportedly in the process of developing some Mac software of their own. And I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

So far I've relented installing any of the programs that would allow me to use other poker rooms. Lets hope I can last the distance and keep the Mac clean!
