So I finally saw Lucky You...
I was in the DVD store the other day and 'Lucky You' was in the bargain pile, so I picked it up as I'd always wanted to see it despite the horrible reviews it received. Now I kind of wish I hadn't. I can be a tough movie critic at times, but this lemon was a tragic waste of 2 hours I will never get back.
I don't know how they got actors like Bana, Barrymore and Duvall to sign on for this dud. You could tell none of them wanted to be there either! The acting was bad, the story line was predictably lame and the whole 123 minutes of the movie was just depressing.
A few scenes in I was cheering for Barrymore's character to punch Bana's 'Huck Cheever' in the face and leave the loser lying on the Vegas pavement. He should stick to playing emotionless tough guys, or at least choose better scripts if he's going to try and play roles requiring any empathy.
I thought the Vegas setting at the Bellagio & Binions, along with the World Series of Poker and cameos from pro poker players would make it worth watching. But they actually make it harder to watch with the robotic acting and poor camera work. I think the producers spent their entire budget on the lead actors and didn't spend nearly enough time or money on script development or production.
You can pick up a copy for as low as $3.52 in the Poker.com DVD Store, but please only watch this movie out of morbid curiosity! Even diehard poker fans will find it tough to sit through.

Despite the failure of Lucky You, the new movie DEAL actually looks pretty decent.
Burt Reynolds, Bret Harison and Shannon Elizabeth star in this film about a Yale student who believe he is the best at poker, and enters the professional world a little too soon. Sounds a lot like the real world. We all think we are the best, and we get out there and find we still need to learn so much more. Enter Burt Reynolds. Reynolds plays a retired poker player helping Harison find his game in a world that loses him in the shuffle.
Like any great movie, we can't just have a student teacher straight forward relationship. There has to be at least one element to mix it up. DEAL has two elements that include a young Las Vegas call girl played by Shannon Elizabeth and Reynold's hunger to rejoin the likes of his poker buddies. In the end, Reynolds and Harison face off in the World Series of Poker Tournament to find the true master.
Also including in this film are some WSOPT alumni's that include, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak, Antonio "The Magician" Esfiandari Greg "Fossilman" Raymer, Joseph Hachem, Chris Moneymaker, Isabelle Mercier, Mike Sexton, and Vince Van Patten.
I hope this movie strikes your fancy more than Lucky You. Hopefully you'll find Reynolds latest film to be a success and show off the poker world in a bright light.
Enjoy!

I was pleasantly surprised with Lucky You. Didn't expect much except for the typical love story, but it was so much more. It focuses on the poker/gambling aspect and the World Series tour quite a bit, even includes cameos of popular players. That's the fun stuff. And Robert Duvall steals the show as expected. But Eric Bana did a decent job as well. It was a little weak at times but the acting pulls it through those moments. Didn't care for the soundtrack very much though. Good date movie!!

Hey, everybody
I've recently finished writing a script that deals partially with poker. If anybody saw the movie "Deal" can you email me and tell me how it ends, especially what happens to the Brett Harrison character. I don't want my script ending to be too much like any other movie. The movie doesn't play in my city, and it won't come out on DVD for months. My email is beachball49yrs@yahoo.com Thanks
