Poker-playing priest

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

There seems to be a new star of TV poker this week, and he goes by the name of Father Andrew Trapp.

Trapp is an assistant pastor at St. Michael Catholic Church in Garden City Beach, Southern California, and is competing in PokerStars Million Dollar Challenge. The PokerStars tournament hits the airwaves this Sunday, and so far Trapp has already picked up $25,000.

The winnings have earned him the right to continue playing in the competition alongside poker greats such as Daniel Negreanu.

A priest playing poker raises several questions of ethics, but Trapp is standing firm, making a statement in a recent release that "people across the country [need] to see that there are still young men choosing to be priests, and that one can be joy-filled and have fun as one serves God."

Trapp defends his poker playing by saying that all of the winnings go to help build a new, bigger church. But what about the losses, Andrew?

Have your say on this hot topic by commenting below. Don't forget to watch the Father's audition tape first, though! There is some incredible acting on offer.

  • I think a priest playing poker for real money does go against conventional beliefs of the church. I think it's great though to be honest. Most all religious beliefs are based on stories as old as our planet. It's 2009 now. I believe a person should do what they feel in their heart is right or wrong. If he is planning on putting his winnings into a church who's to say there's anything wrong with that?

  • I am not sure the catholic church would really frown on this. Compared to the alter boy thing this is actually good for them. Besides, he is doing nothing wrong. It is a game of skill, and I could be wrong but he is doing it for the church right? The catholic church holds bingo, that is far more along the lines of gambling. Good for this guy!
