Walter wins in New Orleans, but where's Don?

Monday, May 30, 2005

Harrahs New OrleansWalter Chambers, a Louisiana State University Alum has won the WSOP 'Bayou Poker Chalenge' Circuit event at Harrah's New Orleans, taking home $787,340 for his trouble.

The final table started off like this.

SEAT 1: Walter Chambers Chip Count – 576,000
SEAT 2: Nick ‘Chairman’ Mao Chip Count – 522,000
SEAT 3: Harry Cullen, Jr. Chip Count – 202,000
SEAT 4: Antonio ‘The Magician’ Esfandiari Chip Count – 320,000
SEAT 5: Imre Leibold Chip Count – 169,500
SEAT 6: Marlon Labbe Chip Count – 163,000
SEAT 7: Cyril ‘Sid’ Gittens Chip Count – 338,500
SEAT 8: Corey A. Bierria Chip Count – 191,000
SEAT 9: Mark Cole Chip Count – 107,000

Our favorite Rock (or is he a ring?) Antonio the Magician was at one time the chip leader, but he accidentally made all his chips dissappear.

And Don ‘Final Table’ Mullis for once did not make the cut! Mullis, went out on the final table bubble, finishing 10th, after making it to the final table an astounding 7 of 11 times at WSOP Circuit events dating back to Lake Tahoe last month.

C'mon Don. Lift your game mate. We want to see you on the final table of the WSOP at the Rio to make up for this one that you missed...

Is using player tracking software cheating?

Saturday, May 28, 2005

Over at United Poker Forum, there has been debate recently over the use of Poker tracking software and whether or not it is an acceptable tool to use when playing poker online.

If you're not familiar with this type of tool, basically there are software applications available that track the hand histories of players at certain online poker rooms and make the information available to users of the software. So essentially other players could have access to your hand history and may be using it to determine the best way to play against you online.

Thankfully Poker.com isn't one of the rooms where your hand information is made available to this type of software.

But is it cheating? Some players argue that it is no different to standing in a casino and watching you play, but I disagree. I think it is an unfair advantage to experienced players and is not something that I would want to see made available to users of Poker.com.

Tracking your own play is great, and I encourage all players to keep records of their online results, but any tool which allows you to gain an advantage that not all players on that site definitely have access to is unfair in my opinion.

I hope more online poker sites take the necssary steps to thwart the use of this type of software to check other players' hand histories.

New WPT Host - Courtney Friel.

Thursday, May 26, 2005

Courtney! It looks like Shana Hiatt's replacement on the World Poker Tour has been announced.

Freelance news reporter, Courtney Friel is going to step into Shana's sexy shoes as the darling of the pro poker circuit.

Courtney's been spending her time on shows like E! Entertainment news and America's Most Wanted and looks like she has the tools to do a great job representing poker.

I hope she's been paying attention to those annoying 'How to Play Texas Holdem' segments that the WPT squeezes into their shows every 5 minutes. Then she'll be able to talk the talk with Mike & Vince and do her bit to annoy us with even more annoying interruptions! Seriously - does the NBA or NFL tell you how to play the game every 5 minutes? I really wish that WPT wouldn't either - but that's a rant for another day....

Good luck on Courtney!

Judge says Poker is a game of chance.

Tuesday, May 24, 2005

A judge in Durham county has ruled that poker is a game of chance, not skill, and therefore is prohibited under local law in North Carolina.

"Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson's decision Monday stymied The Joker Club, which had hoped to open a poker-betting establishment here. A club lawyer indicated that Hudson's decision might be appealed."

I'd like to see this judge play Phil Ivery heads up to see just how much chance is involved. I'd bet my entire bankroll that he wouldn't win a single session in twenty attempts.

Chance.... pffft. More like fat chance you'd ever win Judge Hudson!

Las Vegas & Poker Blog

Sunday, May 22, 2005

We've been checking out other Poker Blogs lately and here are my two favourites.

http://www.lasvegasvegas.com/pokerblog/
;
The Las Vegas and Poker Blog does a great job of keeping up with poker goings on in Vegas, and even has recent pics. It's a great read for anyone interested in the Vegas Poker scene and will be a must visit site come WSOP time.

http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-journal.php;
Daniel Negreanu's personal journal gives great insight into the life of a succesful poker pro. He goes into detail about most aspects of his day to day activities and it is usually quite interesting. He shows great dedication, updating the blog at least every couple of days.

Do you know of any other Poker blogs worth reading. Let us know about them.

The World Series Awaits

Saturday, May 21, 2005

It's not long now until the 2005 World Series of Poker kicks off at the Rio in Las Vegas. The last circuit event has just started in New Orleans, then a few days after the 1 1/2 month long WSOP circus starts on June 2.

The HorseshoeHarrah's have broken tradition this year and have moved the tournament away from Binion's Horshoe casino in old vegas on Fremont St, to their strip flagship, the Rio. Although it's a much bigger and better venue, some of the regular WSOP participants will no doubt miss the fight for winners bracelets in the familiar surrounds of the Horseshoe.

So who are the favorites this year if there is such a thing? Picking from an estimated field of more than 6000 it is tough to predict with any real certainty if any household name pros will be able to wade through the dead money and internet qualifiers to make the final table.

Phil Ivey is my pick of the pros. He's had a good year and seems to have the patience required to pick his spots and outlast such a large field. Or maybe we'll get another Moneymake or Raymer who comes from nowhere to steal the prize?

Whatever the result, it is sure to be an exciting climax to the Poker year. Vegas will be buzzing from June 2 up until the finale on July 15. We'll keep track of the WSOP results right here on Poker.com so check back often for updates once the action starts.

Rocks & Rings - What the?

Thursday, May 19, 2005

I'm all for the furtherment of poker culture into mainstream life, but the junk that Antonio 'The Magician' Esfandiari is going on about at his website is just embarassing for the game.

Rocks & Rings and everything they go on about just reads as an immature load of mumbo jumbo. I guess I just missed out on the Bling Bling generation and everything that goes with it. Over the hill at 30!

Here's a few of examples;

TURBO SHOPPING. Buying clothing under the gun, where money is no object and second-guessing is not allowed.

BUDGET BOY. A term of disdain directed toward anyone who contemplate the price of a purchase. "If you have to ask, Budget Boy, you can't afford it."

So what is Rocks and Rings? A boys' club? An attitude? A way of life? An excuse to, as the Beastie Boys put it, "Fight for your right to party?" A swarm-and-conquer strategy for meeting women? All of that, and more, much more. If you want to be Rocks and Rings, all you have to do is make style your watchword, strike an attitude of invincibility and never put a price on anything. Rocks and Rings rules!

What the?

Anyway, count me out of any local neighbourhood Rocks & Rings crew that might be forming. Win some more poker tournaments and you'll impress me Antonio. For now it seems you are just a 'Budget Boy' when it comes to class and your limited success has gone to your head. Stick to the magic tricks.

Daniel Negreanu takes Heads Up #2

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

Daniel Negreanu As a part of the new Wynn Las Vegas casino opening fanfare, Canadian born poker pro Daniel Negreanu has offered all comers the chance to play him heads up in a high stakes poker game of the challenger's choice.

He's had two takers so far. First up was David Oppenheim who caught some nice cards in their limit holdem game and walked away with $200,000 of Daniel's cash. (or is it Wynn's cash? I suspect they may be putting up at least some of Daniel's stake)

The second batter to the plate was Mimi Tran. Mimi also chose limit holdem for the match but did not fare as well as David, going down in a 10 hour marathon.

There's rumours that Barry Greenstein or math whiz David Sklansky might be one of the next challengers. I hope one of them is brave enough to take on Daniel in a game of No Limit Holdem rather than another limit foot race. It sure sounds like Wynn Las Vegas is the place to be at the moment for the best poker action. Get down there and check it out if you are in 'The Vegas'.

Canadian Club bets on Moneymaker

Four bullets! So even Canadian Club whisky is cashing in on the world's poker craze by signing 2003 WSOP winner Chris Moneymaker to host Poker contests and represent their fading brand.

Knobb Creek has Howard Lederer and Erik Lingdren as spokespeople, which was one of the first non-poker related endorsement deals for Poker pros. Now there's Moneymaker as well. I wonder who'll be the next? Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson looks like he's enjoyed a bourbon or 12 in his time. He'd be a good pick.

The Poker.com team will have to make sure we try some of the local whisky when we go to Canada next month. Any advice on where to go in Montreal for a Canadian Club from all you Canadian Poker.com members?

It's Alive!

Tuesday, May 10, 2005

The new Poker.com has finally launched. After months of development of the software we have gotten the new website up and can start working toward making it the best poker site on the interweb.

Thanks to all our members that have downloaded and started playing with us already. We hope that you are enjoying the poker games. You have lots to look forward to in the next few weeks.

On May 25 our HUGE freerolls start. I can't wait for that. $5000 a day. A freeroll worth from $200 up to $3000 every 3 hours! I wish I could play...

There's also a bucketload of new features going to be included in the Poker.com software. There's some ideas we have that will making online poker a lot more like the real thing. But I'll leave the details to our development team who will post here from time to time and look for some feedback on what our players like and dislike about the software.

We know there is a lot of work to do yet, but from everyone here at Poker.com, thanks for making our launch a success and we look forward to working hard and making sure that Poker.com is your favorite poker website and software.
