Online Poker Cheating

Friday, March 31, 2006

Why would anyone cheat? Some would say it's human nature to try and gain unfair advantage, but I'd like to hope that human nature would be to do what you think is right, not wrong. Greed is not human nature. I think greed is a product of an individual's environment and is the main driving force behind anyone that cheats at any game or contest involving money.

Personally I despise the very notion of cheating. I've never been able to really cheat at anything, even as a joke or when playing a friendly game. My basketball team-mates still smack me over the head sometimes when I help a referee out by owning up to a foul or sending a ball out of bounds. I just can't help myself - I can't cheat - ever!

Recently there's been a few instances of players cheating in online poker tournaments that have been made very public (not at Poker.com). The players busted have made statements trying to explain why they did what they did, even attempting to justify their actions. There is no justification for cheating in my eyes. These players would have known all along that what they were doing was not only against the rules, but just plain wrong. If you can work out how to play poker online, then you also have the same instinctual knowledge of what is right and wrong, just like the rest of us.

Two things amazed me about the recent cheating that was exposed.

1. How did they get away with it for so long?
Poker.com is a relatively new room, perhaps with better backend technology than some of the more established sites, but this never would have happened on our system. It would have been identified the first time the player tried their little tricks and we would have known about it. On one particular site (the internet's biggest) the player cheated in a ridiculous number of tournaments. How much of this is really happening there?

2. Why did one site give the player some of their money back?
Let this be a warning to any potential cheats. If you do this at Poker.com, you won't be getting a cent of your balance. It will all be returned to the players you played against and any remaining balance will be donated to charity. Why would a site give back any money to a player who has admitted to cheating not only your site, but also who has won other money from your loyal and fair players. If you detected them cheating via one method using online detection, what is to say that they were not using other currently undetectable or offline methods to cheat or collude against more of your players on other occassions? If someone has admitted to cheating, then you know they have no moral standards, so why assume that their other games were fair? Our terms and condtions are written to discourage potential cheating and if any cheats are caught I will be making sure that all funds are forfeited. In the old west, you would have been shot, so your money being given to a charity is a pretty good alternative I would think.

Anyway, just my take on cheating. I just don't know how people could do it and live with themselves, let alone try to stick up for themselves and rationalise what they did... The internet makes some people crazy and they lose their sense of right and wrong in search of a quick buck. Don't let it happen to you.

Another Sunday At Poker.com

Monday, March 27, 2006

As normal Sunday's at Poker.com is when our BIG CASH tournaments come out to play. Have you earnt your $20,000 freeroll coupon or tried winning your enty into the $10,000 Guaranteed for only $5?

Well don't miss your chance this week and who know's, next week I might be writing about your recent wins and instant bankroll.

The $20,000 Weekly Freeroll
Today's freeroll boasted a field of 918 players who were all eager to take home their piece of the prize pool and with $4,000 for first place, I wish I could spend a lazy Sunday afternoon earning that kind of cash from the comfort of my own home.

Firtly, congratulations must go to Dogwitbone who, after being the shortest chip stack among the final five, managed to fight back and take out first place.

The action at the final table really started to get interesting when out of the final 5 players the two chip leaders went head to head for what potentially could be the deciding hand of the tournament.

Bullybil pocket 9's
Kingston pocket 8's

The Board: 4 3 2 2 with the river landing a 9 and handing Bullybil the hand and a clear chip advantage.

The final 3 players shaped up like this:
Bullybil - 423k
Dogwitbone - 245k
MSPChris - 170k

Next deciding hand was contested between:
Bullybil - AQs
MSPChris - QKh

The Board: Jh Js 10c 8c 10d

Now with only two players remaining and one clear chip leader, the tournament could have been over the very next hand.

However, this wasn't the case and Dogwitbone managed to double up with his King High Flush.

The next few hands were just blinds switching back and forth until the all-in decider arrived...

Bullybil - J5
Dogwitbone - A10

The Board: 10 9 8 4 6

Sunday's $10,000 Guaranteed

With only 100 players taking up the challenge and first place paying out $3k, this is definately a tournament I'd be registering for... If it didn't mean losing my job.

Here are the chip counts and tournament deciding hands for the final 3 players.

RoadWaffle - 121k
Lawrns - 37k
SchteeKen - 48k

The first hand played among the final 3 turned was:
Lawrns - A8
Roadwaffle - Q9

The Board: 8 A 3 6 9, pairing Lawrns Ace and doubling him up.

Unfortunately for Lawrns the hand that had just enabled him to double up would end his tournament:
Lawrns - A4
RoadWaffle - A8

The Board: 2c 6s 10c 9h Kd

Now with only 2 players remaining the last 5.5hrs came down to this one hand:

Roadwaffle - Kh 10d
SchteeKen - 7c 7h

The Board: 5h 5c 8h Ad 2d

Giving SchteeKen the win and a $3,000 addition to his bankroll.

Also, I'd like to give a special commendation to Bullybil who not only came 2nd in today's weekly $20,000 freeroll, but placed in the money for the $10,000 Guaranteed as well.
Great effort Bullybil.

Now that's what I call smart, doubling your chance to win huge cash prizes in half the time, simply by playing both Poker.com's big MTT touraments on the same day.

$500 Initial Depositors Freeroll

1st place - Loonman $150

All aboard the poker bandwagon!

Sunday, March 26, 2006

Poker may be a game of skill, but some marketers out there are trying there hardest to make Poker look like a fad.

Kerusso, the world's leading designer and producer of Christian-themed apparel has even joined the fray with the release of their 'Faith Chips'.

They explain it best, so here is the blurb from their website.

A new spin on the traditional pocket coin, Faith Chips are not just designed to carry around as a personal reminder, but rather as an ultra cool mini tract to hand out. Because poker is so popular right now, the design of the chip creates a curiosity about the message. It's really no different than using something ordinary, like a T-shirt, to share the Gospel. The authentic look and feel of the chips will make it likely that people will hang onto them and ponder the meaning of the messages!

The Best Beer Drinking/Poker Album In The World,… Ever!

Thursday, March 23, 2006

Music giant EMI has released the latest is their classic line up of compilations, The Best Beer Drinking Album In The World… Ever! Volume III — Poker Night. Featuring tracks like Kenny Rogers — "The Gambler", Sublime — "What I Got", Sum 41 — "In Too Deep" and The Verve — "Lucky Man" Now apart from Kenny's classic the poker references are pretty thin, here at Poker.com we have come up with a few songs that we thing should have been in there. Where was Ray Charles - Losing Hand, Electric Light Orchestra - Poker, Banda Conexao Fair - Royal Straight Flush, Alan Parsons - Turn of a Friendly Card, Jerry Reed - Uptown Poker Club, Motorhead - Ace of Spades, Iron Maiden - Aces High, Feargal Sharkey - A good heart these days is hard to find and my personal favorite for dodgy poker tie in, Elton John - Club at the end of the street, clearly talking about fifth street.

Now this music isn't really my scene, so as the resident wannabe dance music DJ in the office Ive compiled my own Poker CD. It breaks down into 3 parts, tunes for pre-flop, tunes for that winning feeling and of course the inevitable tunes for the bad beats.

Pre Flop

Dave Armstrong – Make your move

Paul Masterson – What you got, what you do

Tocadisco – Your no good for me

Yes – Owner of a lonely heart

Zaab and State of Soul – When I hold you

Royksopp – 49%

Gianlucca Motta – Up and Down

That winning feeling

The Crystal Method – High Roller

Deep Dish vs Dire Straights – Flashing for money

Midnight Star – Midas Touch

Craig Obey – Your gonna have to pay

Bad Beats

Fischerspooner – Never win

Royksopp - What else is there?

Deepface – Been Good

Depeche Mode – A pain that I'm used to

Harry Choo Choo Romero – What happened

If only I was an international music label.........

Have your say on Poker music in the Poker.com forums http://forum.poker.com/

Monday, March 20, 2006

Another Sunday is winding up and as normal Poker.com’s players have continued their winning ways with our end of week tournaments.

$20,000 Weekly Freeroll
Sunday’s weekly freeroll saw 993 players register for their chance at winning not only the cash, but the prized Poker.com accolade.

1st place - DaGangzta wins $4,000
2nd palce - jake7up wins $2,500

Winning Hand: 10h Jc VS 5s 6s

Board: 8c Ks 4h 10c 2c

Giving DaGangzta the win with his pair of 10’s

$10,000 Guaranteed

2nd - rufusbalwin wins $2,000

Final Hand: Ah 7h VS 3s 6s

Board: 7s 3h 3c 8h Jc

After hitting his set of 3’s on the turn, Tephry decided to slow play his hand and checked through. That’s when rufusbaldwin pushed all-in with his flush draw as he attempted to take down the 36k pot.

Tephry called immediately. Unfortunately for rufusbaldwin the river landed nothing, making Tephry’s set the tournament winning hand.
Charity Tournament
Winner - Vikuska

With the support of our very generous players, this months Poker.com Charity Tournament has raised $280 for a very worthy recipient, UNICEF.

Remember for every $1 donated by a player… Poker.com donates a $1.

Friday Staff Tournament

You may have noticed every Friday afternoon (Australian time) the staff at Poker.com jump online and battle it our for the heavily contested title of Staff Tourney Champion.

If you’ve been lucky enough to witness one of these highly skilled games, then you have probably seen how NOT to play a MTT.

Despite the extremely high standards the Poker.com staff set, this weeks Staff Tourney Winner was none other than me - Liam.

Congratulations to Scott for his valiant effort to claim 2nd place, but he couldn’t quite steal victory from the now Back2Back staff champion…. Did I mention it was me - Liam?

Anyway, after winning the last two weeks I think its only fair that Poker.com sponsor my entry into the WSOP this year, what do you think Kris?

Actually, don’t answer that… It’s just me dreaming, but you don’t have to dream about playing the world’s largest poker tournament.

For as little as $1. Poker.com could be sending YOU to Vegas this year…

Poker in Bali?

Saturday, March 18, 2006

I've taken a week's break from the Poker.com world to fly up to Bali and chill out on the beach, sipping on Bintang. (Indoneasia's Local Beer)

At least I had planned to spend time on the beach. As it turns out Semanyak's beaches on the west side of the island don't exactly look like they did in the brochure. The golden white sands have been replaced by dark, polluted mud, covered in garbage and a thousand beachside merchants that refuse to leave you alone unless you buy a 20c leather wristband or carved Hindu statue. So my one trip to the beach 50m from our room will probably be the last.

It's not all bad though, as the resort is great, although empty. My girlfriend and I are one of about 6 couples staying in a 150 room resort, so we have about 10 local hospitality workers following us wherever we go and they couldn't be friendlier. It's low season at the moment, but the tourist numbers are still significantly down since the bombings that occurred here, targeting westerners.

I went shopping yesterday to see if I could get any poker supplies for a few poolside sit & gos. Every shops sells fake watches, sunglasses and designer t-shirts by the truckload, but not a single pack of cards or poker chips were to be found!

But we hit the jackpot last night in the resort's 'sports bar'. I now know what it would be like to have your own bar. We spent a night as the only patrons in the sports bar, with 5 staff just to get us drinks and our own 5 piece covers band. The band was pretty awesome actually - the Balinese people really can sing and the guitarist did a wicked Santana impersonation.

In the corner of the bar, I found a checkers set and a pack of cards. We now had the makings of a Sit & Go. With the checkers as chips we started the first Balinese Heads Up Challenge. I think we got a few bad looks to start with as gambling of any any form is a definite no-no in Hindu culture (unless it's a 'religious' cock fight apparently).

I went to an early lead and holding a fush draw after the flop, had 'Mrs Kris' as the locals call her, down to just four checkers with an all-in decision. She called and turned over A5, needing a 3 to complete her wheel straight.

Of course the turn was a 3 and no spades came to fill my flush and it went downhill from there. I don't think I won another hand and my poker nemesis girlfriend took out the inaugral Balinese Heads Up Challenge. She says it was never in doubt.... I wish I had the same confidence with gutshot draws...

I sipped my Bintang and sang along to a few more songs from the only band I've ever seen sing in perfect key, but always with totally wrong lyrics. It's a load of fun hearing some of the lines they make up to fit into a song.

I'm going to go up to Kuta tonight for a Sunday session and see if I can find a few geezers (British tourists) to talk into a game of poker. I need to get my poker fix against someone I have a chance of beating.

Sing can can (no worries in Balinese)

American Jeff Williams wins EPT Grand Final.

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

Monte Carlo seemed the perfect setting for this prestigious event, the
10,000 Euro EPT Grand Final. Monte Carlo near Nice in the south of France is

the playground of the rich and famous. Outside of any of its many casinos
one can find some of the most expensive cars money can buy. Porsche's
Ferrari's Bentleys, and of course Rolls Royce's. The marina also boasts many
luxurious yachts belonging to the millionaires of Monaco.

The 5 Star Monte Carlo Bay Hotel was the host of the four day event. On 'day one' 298 runners showed up. although some players were lucky enough to qualify online many, including myself had to stump up the 10,000 Euro's. As the prize pool was estimated to be the largest in Europe in history it attracted a quality field. A few Americans even made the long trip across the pond including Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem. With so many top players it was going to be a tough job to become champion and scoop the 900,000 Euro's first prize.

Atfer two days play the field was reduced to 132 players and a few of the big names were out. So for their entertainment they decided to run a Single Table Tournament, similar to a Sit n Go online. Except entry to this was $10,000!!! Hachem was first to sign up soon followed by many of Europe's top online cash game players, wanting to take the World Champions scalp. After a few hours Hachem emerged the winner, in some style as well hitting quad aces in the final hand. Greg Raymer, not to be outdone by Hachem, won the follow up tournament the night after. Only they up the ante to $20,000 buy in, a little out of my range.

Early on day three the tournament was down to 27 players. Now that everyone
was into the money, minimum of 16,800 Euro's, the play loosened up. The field was soon reduced to eight and the final table loomed.

EPT Monte Carlo Final Table

Seat 1: Marc Karam (Canada) 231,900
Seat 2: Marcel Luske (Holland) 486,000
Seat 3: Jeff Williams (USA) 495, 700
Seat 4: Ross Boatman (UK) 119,700
Seat 5: Tierry Cazals (France) 766,650
Seat 6: Arshad Hussain (UK) 131,600
Seat 7: Fraser Dunphy (UK) 125,600
Seat 8: Aleksander Strandli (Norway) 633,500

Marcel Luske looked favourite for the title before the final started, due to
his prior record and ever increasing chip stack. After seven hours of
thrilling play it soon emerged that the 19 year old Jeff Williams from USA
was going to take the top prize. His extremely aggressive style and good
timing seemed the perfect formula to crown himself champion and scoop the
900,000 Euro's. His young man qualified for the EPT online in a small
satellite. So give these WSOP satellites a go on Poker.com and who knows I
might be writing about you this summer!!

Our first female WSOP winner!

Sunday, March 12, 2006

Today’s WSOP Grand Final was a tight affair with the eventual winner, MsRounders, becoming the first female player to win a major tournament seat at Poker.com.

Not only has MsRounders won the opportunity to rub shoulders with the world’s best players, but she has managed to achieve this chance of a lifetime for the total cost of $1.

That’s right $1… MsRounders entered one of Poker.com’s daily $1 WSOP Qualifiers and won her way through the satellites and into the Grand Final.

Cost to MsRounders = $1 Total Prize Won = $12,500

2005 WSOP Prize Pool = Over $56,000,000

Sounds like a smart investment to me…

Also, if you had the chance to watch today’s final table you may have noticed some old Poker.com’s faces making the cut. Both Zorro57 and Chris1234, who won packages to Melbourne for the 2006 Aussie Millions, made the final 10 table, but couldn’t handle the likes of MsRounders.

On behalf of everyone at Poker.com congratulations MsRounders on winning your WSOP seat and good luck in Las Vegas.

Other Tournament Winners Today:
- $20,000 Weekly Freeroll - SIBOY1
- $10,000 Guaranteed - Underdog
- Ladies Only Tournament - Becky3345

Stop reading this - go register for a WSOP satellite! Now! I would be if I was allowed to.....

Bowing out in Style

Thursday, March 09, 2006

Poker.com European Correspondant 'BullitPete' has been knocked out of the EPT Final in Monte Carlo.

BullitpetePete was eliminated on day 3 finishing 42nd out of 298, failing to cash, but looking damn good in his Poker.com hoodie.

It all went pear shaped when he was stacked with 21k and the blinds at 800/1600.

He pushed all in UTG, overbetting with big slick hoping for some calls from short stacks holding AQ or AJ.

The short stack pushes his 15k in, trying to steal the blinds, not realising that Pete had already pushed in before him.

The guy turns K7 suited & Pete is happy. Pete then catches another 2 aces for a set & is even happier. But as the final two cards hit the table Pete realises his opponent has made the runner runner nut flush - and he is not very impressed at all.

Pete may have bowed out 42nd, but was looking fantastic in his hoodie! He'll be checking in with his full wrap up of the event as soon as he has calmed down enough to type....

Internet poker guru cashes in for real.

Wednesday, March 08, 2006

Furthering the reputation of online players, online poker celebrity Darrell “Gigabet” Dicken has won a Grueling 13-Hour Final Table in WSOP Circuit event at Harrah’s Rincon.

Despite being run at the same time as the NBC National Heads Up Championship the Rincon WSOP circuit event still drew some big names. The final table included several well known pro's including Kathy Liebert, Andy Bloch, and Tom “The Shamrock Kid” McCormick.

The Shamrock Kid was the first to finishing in 9th place. Desperately short stacked he pushed all in with pocket 6's, only to be destroyed when Gary Lent's Cowboy's flopped to quads.

Andy Bloch fell hard, going from second in chips to out in a devastating 30-minute span. Again Lent was the culprit stealing almost half of Andy's chips with an all-in on the river bet. His final undoing were the hole cards of the week, the Kris R Special, pocket 4's. Andy made a move to steal the blinds with his KRS only to find Lent sitting on the big blind with pocket rockets, when Lent made his trips on the turn Andy's fate was sealed and he went out in 7th place.

Gary Lent's fantastic run ended in 4th place, when his A-K ran into eventual winner Darrell Dicken's KRS, no pair came for Lent and Dicken's pocket four's proved too strong.

Kathy Liebert fell in almost humorous circumstances, WeiKai Chang moved all in with K-7, and was called by both Dicken (J-10) and Liebert (K-J). The final board showed 7-5-2-2-Q, and the lowest hole card was paired, tripling up Chang and eliminating Liebert in 3rd place.

Gigabet

When heads-up play began, Darrell Dicken enjoyed a decisive 11-1 chip lead over Chang and the end seemed near. Chang however had other ideas forged a steely comeback that took him to the chip lead. Nearly an hour after heads-up play started, the final decisive hand of the tournament took place when Chang was dealt 10-10, Chang raised and Dicken, holding J-J, re-raised all-in. Chang thought for a moment, and called. He instinctively knew he was in trouble, a fact confirmed when the hole cards were revealed. Chang needed one last miracle, a ten, which did not come. The pocket jacks held up and Dicken was the champion.

Dicken received the coveted WSOP gold and diamond ring presented to each Circuit winner. He also collected $372,780 in first-place prize money. A reporter asked Dicken what he plans to do with all the cash. “I don’t know,” he replied. “Put it in the bank?”

Once again online players have proved their place in the poker world, congratulations to “Gigabet” from every one at poker.com.

Marathon man outlasts Jesus

Known for winning $7,000 in a prop bet to run a marathon on the hottest day of the year in Las Vegas when it was 115 degrees, Ted Forrest has again proved he is a distance man in the final of the 2006 NBC Heads Up Championship.

Forrest outlasted all comers, along the way surviving the longest match in tournament history against Sam Farha. Then he came face to face with Jesus, 2005 NBC Heads Up Championship runner up Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson.

After Ferguson took the first match in the best of three final, all the pressure was on Forrest, or at least should have been. The second match saw Ferguson dominated by Forrest's top pairs. Both players went the distance on several hands only for Ferguson to find Forest was holding top pair.

In the final and deciding match Forrest took the early lead and never looked back. He bullied Ferguson out of some big pots early, and then when Ferguson finally made some hands he couldn't get a call from Forrest. The in the hand that that all but decided the championship Ferguson flopped two pair kings and nines, Forest boldly stayed in the hand holding only a pair of sixes, and was rewarded when he caught his trips on the river. The river was again brutal to Ferguson on the final hand, Ferguson was already behind at the turn holding a pair of queens to Forrest's cowboys, to at insult to injury Forrest again made his trips on the river clinching the championship in dominating fashion.

And for the second year in a row, Jesus was the bridesmaid.

Jesus gets one foot in the door.

Round one in the NBC Heads Up Championship finals has gone to last years runner up Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson.

Ferguson held a slight chip lead and when Ted Forrest raised to $120,000 preflop Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson saw his chance and moved all in. Forest called and showed pocket tens, Ferguson flipped over A-9. The flop came K-J-7, and the turn was 8, giving both players a straight draw. However the river was kind to Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson and he caught an Ace, and won the first match.

Jesus Returns!

Monday, March 06, 2006

Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson is in the final of the NBC Heads Up Championship for the second year in a row.

Huck Seed went all in with the Kris R Special, pocket 4's only to be crushed by Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson's pocket tens. There is something in that for all of us to learn.

Ted Forest muscled his way into the other seat in the final, bullying Sean Sheikhan to lay down several hands. Sean took the lead late in the match, but the Kris R Special again proved pivotal. Ted pushed all in with the Kris R Special, Sean called QJ, and when he picked up another jack on the river it looked like it might be all over, the KRS came through though when a 4 came on 4th street, crippling Sean's chip stack. It was all over a few hands later when Sean's J7 ran into Ted's cowboys.

With my tip Huck Seed crashing out in the semi's I'm going to give the nod for Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson to make the transition from bridesmaid to bride and become this years NBC Heads Up Champion with Ted Forest pushing him all the way before falling in second place.

Semi-Final Time at Ceasars

The semi-final match ups are set in the NBC Heads Up Championship.

Daniel Negreanu, many peoples favorite to win was taken down by the man everyone loves to hate Sean Sheikhan.

Recent winner at the LA Invitational Barry 'Robin Hood' Greenstein couldn't get past Huck Seed

Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson is one match away from back to back finals after eliminating James McManus.

And in the longest match in the history of the NBC Heads-Up Poker Championship, Ted Forrest finally outlasted Sam Farha after over 3 ours of heads up action.

So in the first semi-final Chris Ferguson takes on the giant killing Sean Sheikhan who already has the scalps of Gus Hansen, Doyle Brunson & Negreanu in this tournament.

In the other semi-final Huck Seed takes on Ted Forest, Huck possibly holding a slight advantage after making light work of Barry Greenstein in comparison with Ted's marathon match-up with Sam Farha.

My tip is for Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson to make it back to the final, but to be twice the bridesmaid losing to Huck Seed.

UPDATE

They switched the brackets on me so its actually Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson vs Huck Seed in one semi.

And Ted Forest vs Sean Sheikhan in the other semi.

Im staying with Huck Seed to win it all, ending Sean Sheikhan's great run in this tourney.

Tilley loves Poker more than Oscars

Sunday, March 05, 2006

One of the participants in the NBC heads up tournament, reigning woman's WSOP champ Jennifer Tilley has declared that she would rather play poker than go to the Oscars.

For the first time in more than a decade, she's skipped the red carpet of the Oscars for the green felt of the poker table.

"This is the first time in 15 years I haven't attended the Oscar parties or gotten swept up in Oscar fever," Tilly told The Associated Press on Sunday from her suite at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip.

"I haven't even seen 'Brokeback Mountain.' I don't even know who's nominated," she said.

Tilly forewent Oscar glitz and joined 63 other poker stars, including boyfriend, poker professional Phil "Unabomber" Laak, for the 2006 National Heads Up Poker Championship in Las Vegas on the weekend.

Tilly was knocked out Saturday in the first round of the single-elimination, one-on-one tournament, which has $1.5 million in prize money up for grabs and will be televised on NBC over six Sundays starting April 16. The winner is to be crowned Monday.

The Oscar nominee, for the 1994 Woody Allen film "Bullets Over Broadway," said she's now getting better treatment as a poker celebrity than as an actress, and making more money, too.

Last year, Tilly beat 600 other women, including several poker pros, to win the World Series of Poker Ladies event.

"In this (tournament), I have the prospect of winning half a million dollars," she said. "In movies, I have the prospect of the film going straight to video."

I'd rather see her at a poker table than in a movie too!

Heads Up is down to 16

The NBC Heads Up Championship is down to 16 players.

In the Clubs bracket, David Chesnoff beat Dan Harrington, James McManus beat Mike Sexton, Josh Arieh beat Eli ELezra and Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson defeated Chip Reese. My pick to reach the semi finals from this group is Chris Ferguson.

In the Hearts bracket (I love how they have split up the draw by suits too - it's a good idea) TJ Cloutier out-bombmed the unabomber Phil Laak, Daniel Negreanu ousted Greg Raymer, David Grey beat 'The Matador' Carlos Mortensen, and Sean Sheikhan beat the legend, Doyle Brunson. My pick to finish on the top of this group is Daniel Negreanu as he's been playing heads up online a lot lately.

In the Spades 1/4 of the draw we had Huck Seed over Erick Lingdren, Scott Fischman over Dee Luong, Amir Vahedi beat Mike Caro and Bary Greenstein eliminated Tuan Le. This is a tough one to pick, but I'm going with Barry Greenstein.

Finally the hearts bracket saw Ted Forrest beat Chad Brown, Ernie Dureck defeated Paul Phillips, Sam Farha sent Barry Shulman packing and Michael Mizrachi beat Howard Lederer. I think Ted Forrest has what it takes to represent the Hearts in the Semi Finals.

NEWSFLASH
Some results just in are that Barry Greenstein, Huck Seed and Chris Ferguson have advanced to the Quarter Finals.

Other Matches currently in progress are:

Daniel Negreanu vs T.J. Cloutier
Michael Mizrachi vs Sammy Farha
Ernie Dureck vs Ted Forrest
David Chesnoff v James Mcmanus

More updates soon.

First Round and out!

Phil Hellmuth busted out in the first round. Chip Reese had pocket tens to Hellmuth's Q-9 on the final hand. The flop was 10-7-3 giving Reese top set and sending Phil on his way. So there will be no repeat for the self proclaimed unluckiest man in poker and we'll have a new heads champ in 2006.

In other first round matchups, Chris Ferguson defeated Freddy Deeb, Mike Sexton knocked out Annie Duke, Josh Arieh defeated David Williams and Barry Shulman stole Antonio the magician's rocks, rings and magic.

With Annie Duke gone, it means all the ladies busted out in the first round which is a shame.

Play finished for the day at the conclusion of round one. Round two play begins tomorrow morning at 11am.

I'm looking forward to hearing about Negreanu Vs Raymer, but every matchup is a good one.

Heads up - Where's Joe?

Saturday, March 04, 2006

The NBC heads up championship is in full swing at Caeser's Palace, Las Vegas. Click Here to view the bracket matchups and results thus far.

I see Moneymaker lost to Tuan Le already and Greg Raymer beat Layne Flack, but where is Joe Hachem? Surely they invited him? He must have had better things to do than play for $1.5million!

Last year's champ, Phil Hellmuth has a tough first round matchup with the player many regard as the best all round poker player in the world - Chip Reese. If he gets through Chip he then has last year's final table opponent, Chris Ferguson as his likely next match. At least WSOP final table player and Tournament of Champions victor 'Mike the Mouth' Matusow has been knocked out so Phil won't have to face him after Ferguson. But he's sure in for a tough ride before even getting out of his 16th of the draw!

In other first round matchups, Daniel Negreanu beat his buddy Evelyn Ng, Jerry Buss went down to Amir Vahedi, and Doyle Brunson knocked out John Juanda. Gus Hansen's run of quick exits continued, losing to Sean 'The Sheik' Sheikhan. And The Grinder got lucky with A8 to bust Mark Seif with AJ.

There's still a lot of poker to play in this one, we'll keep you updated as more knockouts occur.

Poker.com Staff swept aside by River Demons.

Thursday, March 02, 2006

The Forum Team League champions, River Demons, threw out a challenge to the Poker.com staff after their league win and today they had their chance to add to their championship glory, with the scalp of the Poker.com staff team.

The championship (and team league) experience of river dogs shone through with the Poker.com staff cannibalizing their own early with Liam and Helen dropping a lot of chips to other staff members early before being eliminated in 9th and 8th respectively. When Scott was taken out in 7th place by Cerberi the Poker.com staff were well and truly on the ropes. Skinski and James falling in quick succession to Kris opened a very slim window of opportunity, and when Cerberi fell to Paul confidence was high in the Poker.com offices. Gupta had other ideas though, and soon knocked out Paul to give the River Demons the win, then going one better and taking Kris down in heads up to add individual honors to the team win.

Final Points were:

Poker.com Staff
Liam ...... 2pts
Helen .....3 pts
Scott .....4 pts
Paul .......8 pts
Kris .......9 pts

Total......26 pts

River Demons
Ramster ......1pt
Skinski ........5pts
James ........6pts
Cerberi .......7pts
Gupta .......10pts

Total .......... 29 pts

Congratulations to River Demons, undisputed Team League Champions.

The Developer's Check In

I've lost count of the number of times I've promised Kris I'd contribute to the blog. What can I say, there's just always something more important to do and never enough hours in a day.

My plan is to make some time at least once a week to post an update from the world of the Poker.com development team. My plan is to share some updates on what's happening in new releases, some personal perspectives of the online poker world from a technical point of view and just generally have a bit of a rant. I may even divulge some tasty morsels about the nifty features we're adding to our software along the way. (Kris Says: Don't do that Paulie - everyone steals our ideas :)

So let's start with our latest achievement, last month was relatively madness free considering we were picking up almost our entire infrastructure and moving it over 5000 kilometres (over 3000 miles) to a bigger and better data centre. You'll all be relieved to hear I've almost recovered from carrying the servers the entire way in a small rowboat...... J/K.....

Many of you with your own firewalls may have noticed the software connecting to different ip addresses, I hope everyone let the change through. The move is part of many technical changes we've made recently to comply with requirements of our Khanawake licensing. Everything went so incredibly smoothly - proof that all the hard work planning and testing was well and truly worth all the effort. A job well done everyone !!

Ourother focus was the rollout of version 2.7 last week. That upgrade marked the completion of another period of hard work by the developers, testers and technical staff. Most of the changes are tweaks and features in the back end that aren't overly visible to players, however they do contribute to increased security, reliability, performance and easier player interaction with support, which are all positives in my book. There were a few new features on the player's end that you can check out in a blog post made last month.

Version 2.7.1 which we released today added real money blackjack to the Poker.com stable of games.

In our next software version, we're making some pretty substantial changes to the client end of the software. In fact it's so big we're calling it version 3.0- that's a major upgrade !! I won't give too much away at this stage but I'm very excited about it and I think everyone will be pleased with what changes, and for that matter what stays the same.

As a final note, please keep the feedback and suggestions rolling in on the forum. I don't have as much time as I would like to reply to everything I see, but I do regularly check that section of the site. We developers from Poker.com are very conscious of the fact that it is our players who spend the most time using our product and therefore are best positioned to make suggestions about what we should change or improve and to provide feedback on how the software works.

Tell all your friends !!

Thoughts for Woodman's Wife

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

Some Canadian poker players from Ontario got together recently to hold a charity tournament to benefit one of their fellow players' wives who is fighting an illness. It's great to see poker players getting together for a good cause.

Poker.com donated a $275 WSOP grand final tournament entry as the top prize in the tournament, as well as $50 to the cause for each new player that signed up with us.

I just wanted to wish Woodman's wife the best of luck with her recovery from everyone here at Poker.com. Congratulations are also in order for Poker.com member BigChrisEl who won the tournament and the chance to win a $12,500 WSOP package in our next WSOP grand final on March 12.

If anyone else is planning a tournament for a good cause, let us know and we will help as much as possible. We can easily set up private online tournaments at Poker.com for this type of event.
