Is Online Poker Rigged?

Sunday, April 30, 2006

I was in the middle of writing a blog post, explaining why online poker isn't rigged and a few reasons to support that view.

It was pretty long....

Then I thought - I shouldn't have to do this. Why am I wasting my time on the weekend to prove something to people that are obviously idiots? If you think online poker is rigged, then why are you playing? You're an idiot that's why...

Anything I say is not going to be seen objectively anyway as I work for Poker.com.

So all I have to say is - If you think Online Poker is rigged - then you are an ignorant fool. Do some research, look at all the factors involved, then make an educated decision for yourself. Don't sell yourself short - learn something about the business so you can make your own decisions that are based on fact, rather than emotion.

And if you still think it is rigged - then simply don't play. Leave the fun for the rest of us, and go and abuse your local casino poker dealer when you get beaten on the river. Yes it happens there too you know.....

I'm going to go play a Sit & Go - have a good Sunday everyone.

Choosing a Nickname

Saturday, April 29, 2006

Sometimes it's hard to come up with a unique nickname at Poker.com. If you were not one of the lucky people who signed up early, you might find yourself in the "nickname is taken" boat.

So how do you come up with a unique name? Online poker is like anything else online, everyone wants their real identity to remain anonymous, but they also want the coolest nickname so people remember and recognize them.

I've suggested to many people to choose a name that describes their likes or dislikes, their interests and hobbies or the things they crave the most, like their favorite car. However, once all the BasketballBoy, HamburgerMan, MakeupMistress and LuckyLady nicknames are gone, what do you try next?

Well, the answer is: anything!

I love to watch the latest internet "craze" or big news story come through as nicknames when new players sign up at Poker.com. When new events or fads hit the news or blogs on the net we see all sorts of new player nicknames.

So did Tom Cruise sign up today under his alias "EthanHunt" or is it just another fanatical Mission Impossible 3 enthusiast signing up?

Are you really the Homestar Runner? What has a Badger and a Mushroom got in common? Is it really the end of the world? Who do the bases really belong to? Can a hamster really dance that well? And if you haven't seen the dubbed Marvel cartoons online yet, then you're probably not one of the "Juggernauts" that signed up recently.

So don't settle to be the 245th Daniel that has to add a number to his nickname "Dan245" .. get creative! Choose a nickname that describes you the most or one of those that set every internet fad in stone. I laugh every time I see them, so let's see more of those crazy, fun nicknames!

Visit the Wiki Encyclopedia if you want to explore more internet fads and phenomenons.

Sign up to Poker.com now and reserve your favorite nickname.

Poker.com Forum Team League

Thursday, April 27, 2006

Did you know that Poker.com has its own Team League.

'NO' - then maybe you should check this out >> Poker.com Forum Team League

The Forum League is a great way to get involved in the Poker.com community and is an easy way to meet fellow poker players from right round the world.

If you don't believe me then mabye one of our friendly volunteer forum moderators can persuade you...

History of the League

A Merry band of Forum users were bored one day, and wondered what mischief they could get up to. Two in particular, bright sparks Evil666 & Cazwil, had an idea to set up teams of players and pit them against each other.

This was set up quite sneakily without telling Poker.com, and the battles commenced over an entire weekend. Unfortunately, it was a roaring success and everyone took it upon themselves to set up threads for their own teams and jamming the forum with team play issues.

Alas, the naughty little secret was out!

Demands were made by Paul the tournament director, as to who had done this devious deed - this is were I (Cazwil) went into hiding for a couple of days, in the hope that he would never find out. But find out he did. A special thanks to everyone who posted my name.

So, the game was up, I had to hold my hands up and confess, of course I dragged Evil666 along with me.

However, there was no need to worry at all, Paul actually liked the idea and gave us our very own sub forum, just for League Issues and, this is the best part, a cash prize for the winning team after a season. Plus the facility to host our very own tables at special prices and comp points... Absolutely fantastic.

We're now going from strength to strength and we are building up a good gaming format, that includes Texas Holdem No Limit, the dreaded Omaha sit'n'goes, and after this season (S3), we are introducing a special MTT, that combines Individual play with Team play.

We also have a bonus Cash Game for the winning side, with great 'bragging rights ' attached.
At the end of a season the winning team pits their poker skills against the Poker.com Staff.
So far the results are:
The River Demons - one win
The Poker.com Staff - one win

We're still in our infancy, but we welcome everyone.
There are minor requirements but they are easily met, and if anyone has any worries there is always friendly support from the League and its Members.

Come and join the fun and make some new friends while playing cards...
What are you waiting for?

Who likes cake?

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Poker.com's software has turned one year old and to celebrate we are giving our players the gifts.

Play in the May 20 tournament and you'll get a chance at $50,000 in cash as well a year's supply of cake. Yes cake....

Whatever cake you like. I prefer something light, like a sponge - but maybe you're a mud cake kinda person. Or cheescake.... mmm cheescake.... Anyway - the winner gets free cake every week for a year.

We're not sure if anyone actually likes cake enough to just play for that reason, but hey it looks pretty good on a banner ad or in a press release... We thought about making the prize free cake and a personal trainer, but decided to just go for the cake and suggest that whoever wins walks to the store every week to pick up their own cakes. That way they can burn off the cake-o-joules each week. :)

There's more info on the Birthday page at Poker.com. There's plenty of ways for new and existing Poker.com players to earn an entry.

Good luck & Happy Birthday to us!

Friendly Players at the Tables

As you may well know, it’s Poker.com’s Birthday this month and to celebrate we are holding a $50,000 Birthday tournament on May 20 for 1,000 of our loyal players.

Because of this tournament, the table chat at Poker.com has changed from the usual bad beat stories and become more like a comedy gala event.

It seems whenever I drop in and visit one of the tables, especially the cash games, I am welcomed with open arms and 100’s of smiley face emoticons.

At first, I was a little shocked, usually nobody wants to talk to me! However, for some reason this week every player on the site wants me stop by his or her table and chat with them.

I’ll admit it, at first I was a little flattered, I was even starting to think I might even have a friend out there after all. Unfortunately, this feeling of self worth quickly became unfounded when the real reason became blatantly obvious to me…

I had something everybody wanted, entry into the Poker.com $50,000 Birthday Tournament.
And believe me, they were more than willing to say whatever necessary to win me over… Just check out the screenshot.

Whilst many of the offers were tempting, especially the “my wife for a coupon”, I am happy to say that I couldn’t be bought… and there are still plenty of chances for you to gain your entry.

Look forward to seeing you at the tables.

Here are some of the lucky recipients already:
Graceslick, Dpanas, Honsey, Hanusha, 00Mine, Grandpajoe, CleverTrevor, Rocker1958,Takinurdollars, Amibluffin, Angelica66, Zman523, MagikSarah, Archer350, Ziegler and TopCity.

Joe Bartholdi, WPT ChampionJoe Bartholdi, a young Las vegas poker pro has captured the title at the World Poker Tour Championship and was rewarded with a first place prize of $3,760,165.

When heads up play began, Joe Bartholdi held almost a three to one chip lead on $25 online qualifier, David Matthew.

Matthew fought his way back to actually take over the chip lead for a few hands, but Bartholdi came back to capture the title with a pair of 5s when Matthew was unable to hit his flush draw. David Matthew earned $1,903,950 for his second place finish.

Ladies impress, but miss out on Final Table Action

Sunday, April 23, 2006

No amount of cheering from the Poker.com staff could propel the 2 remaining ladies at the Bellagio's World Poker Tour Championship to the televised final table.

19 players started the day including one of the hottest players around right now, Victor Ramdin, champion of the recent Foxwoods Poker Classic.

As always the boys in the office were cheering much louder for the other hottest players - Erica Schoenberg and Vanessa Rousso.

AK was the undoing of both ladies. Erica was crippled when David Matthew's KQ caught a second queen on the turn crushing her AK off-suit. She fought her way back, tripling and doubling up turning $65,000 to over $500,000 with two big pots. That was where her run ended though, as she was eliminated in 16th place when AQ suited ran into Victor Ramdin's cowboys.

Vanessa almost made it to the televised final table but went out at the TV bubble when her AK suited was cracked by James Van Alstyne's AJ after he paired his jack on the turn.

Clearly if your holding AK at the Belagio today and you don't catch king on the flop, don't wait for the turn, lay that hand down!

So now that the gorgeous women have bowed out the final table looks like this:

James Van Alstyne $8,070,000
Joe Bartholdi $7,135,000
Claus Nielsen $5,875,000
David Matthew $5,765,000
Roland De Wolfe $1,860,000
Men The Master Nguyen $1,490,000

James Van Alstyne has looked very strong topping the chip count for the last couple of days, but the top four all have good stacks and will be ready to make a push tomorrow. One of the two short stacks left is Men The Master Nguyen, so its probably too early to count him out yet also.

Sunday is Pay Day at Poker.com

As usual, Sunday at Poker.com has lived up to its name and proved to be quite a handy payday for some of our big tournament players.

$20,000 Weekly Freeroll -
Entrants: 912
Congratulations to today’s $20,000 Weekly Freeroll winner, Amibluffin, who not only boosted his bankroll by $4,000, but also has the $20k accolade to prove it. Trouble is with his $4k freeroll wins and now this, Poker.com will have to re-size his player box to fit in all the trophies!

Here is how the final 4 stacked up before the action heated up:

DrBrain $490k
Amibluffin
$190k
AceRick
$122k
Youngyertiskier
$85k

Although DrBrain had a healthy chip stack going into the final four, he was unable to hold on for long, as the next hand saw the lead change. Thanks to a handful of lovely ladies, QQQ, Amibluffin managed to double up and set himself for a good run home.

Tournament Highlights;

Showdown for 4th Place: (both players All-in pre-flop)
DrBrain - Ah Kh Vs AceRick - Jc 9c
Board: Ac 8d Js Turn: 4h River: Tc

Showdown for 3rd: (both players All-in pre-flop)
Amibluffin - 9d 9c Vs DrBrain - Ad 3s
Board: 2c Qs 2h Turn: 8s River: 3d

Final Showdown:
Amibluffin
: Ah 3d Vs Youngyertiskier - 9h Qs
Board: 6h 8c 4h Turn: Kc River: 2d

So, with the Ace High Amibluffin secured the victory and yet another trophy for his player box. (It's going straight to the pool room as an Aussie would say - watch this movie if you want to get the joke)

Also, it was great to see player Youngyertiskier manage to sneak into 2nd place after being short stacked for most of the final table. Hopefully I can take something away from this… Since I’m usually the short stack after level 1.
--------------------------
$10,000 Guaranteed
Every week I say it, and every week the opportunity goes begging. In case you did not know, every Sunday Poker.com holds a $10,000 Guaranteed Tournament and if there was just one tourney I could play (if I was allowed), this would be IT!

My Reasons to Play:

  • Only 98 entries. That’s less than half what the field is guaranteed for, so it's a 100% +ev investment on your money.
  • Unbelievable return on your $50+$5 buy-in
  • You can earn entry via our $5 satellites

Judging by the entrants I can see that a few Poker.com regulars have found the value here and are coming back week after week…And with good reason.

Congratulations to Flind1 on a terrific win and from all the staff at Poker.com we wish you continued success with your newly acquired bankroll… $3,000 to be exact.

Showdown for 5th:

Flind1 - Td Th Vs Armbrust - Ad Qd
Board: 8h 7h 3c Turn: 5c River: 6d

Showdown for 4th Place: (both players All-in pre-flop)
P0kerFacesB0uy- Ah Jc Vs BeatleBoyin - 7s 7d
Board: 9c 9s 2c Turn: Js River: Qh

Showdown for 3rd: (both players All-in pre-flop)
Flind1 - Kd Kc Vs P0kerFacesB0uy - 4c 4s
Board: Ac Jc 5d Turn: 2c River: 6h

Final Showdown:
Flind1: 8d 8s Vs Flourkid - Ts 7d
Board: 3h 8c 2d Turn: 4h River: 6s

Well done to Flind1 on the great win and I’d like to wish Flourkid the best of luck in the upcoming Showdown Poker Tour Final.
--------------------------
Showdown Tour Qualifier
Congratulations to Flourkid, Danila1 & Chipraker420 who have taken the opportunity to turn $5 into a $500 entry coupon. Good luck to you all in the upcoming Grand Final on Saturday, May 13.

Well that is it for this week’s tournament wrap. I’ll be back next week with all the action from Poker.com’s April 30 WSOP Grand Final.

Have you REGISTERED yet?

An Afternoon with Paulie...

Friday, April 21, 2006

It's been a hectic few weeks since I last posted about getting version 3.0 finished and testing started. The official release is still more than a few weeks away and it needs some fairly substantial testing. I guess it's close enough to being ready now though that I can drop a few hints as to what it might mean to the Poker.com world.

Multiple Games in Multiple Windows
The major focus of this version has been multiple game play and how best to allow players this ability regardless of the specs of their machine, the capabilities of their monitors and graphics adapters or how good a poker player they might be. The real struggle in doing this is to find a balance between providing as much flexibility in the user interface as possible and still maintaining a simple, easy to understand software package for players with all levels of computer skills. So here's a basic summary of what has changed in that department (these could all be slightly different if something changes between now and when it releases):

In the settings dialog box ('Settings' button from the lobby) there's a new tab called 'Window', this pane contains settings that apply to where games are opened, you have two groups of settings, 'Window Mode' and 'Window Layout'. Window mode allows you to decide whether you want new games to open in the lobby as a tab (as it does currently) or in a new window. Window layout allows you to choose how the games in the lobby or the new window are laid out on the screen. Currently there are two layout options, 'Single' and '2x2 Grid'.

Another great feature that comes with opening games in a new window is the ability to resize the window to whatever you like. We're still deciding between two schemes here, do we allow the player to resize the window to whatever weird and wacky shape they like or constrain a 4:3 aspect ratio ?? Personally I think players will appreciate the chance to exactly fill whatever empty space they have on their screens with just one more game but you'll have to wait and see how it ends up.

The combination of these two settings provide the user with a lot of flexibility, for example:
• A player who's computer display can only support a maximum of 800x600 (yes a lot of people still ride this old rusty bike) can open 4 games in the one window using a 2x2 layout, everything's going to be a little small but it's still playable.

• A player with multiple monitors can use 'New Window' and 'Single' and then maximize or fullscreen the window to get a game taking up all available space in each monitor. (or 4 or 6 or 8 monitors, you get the picture).

• A player may want to play blackjack at the same time as a ring game or two, maybe a tournament here and there and wants to be able to see what's happening at the same time in all games, they could either open them all in new windows, or pop them all into the one window laid out in a grid and move them around together, maximize and resize them as a group ... the possibilities really are almost endless.

Navigation
Navigation between games and notification when a game requires action remains unchanged, the 'game bar' (I just made that name up, let's call it that from now on) at the top of the lobby remains and finds it's way into every new window.

To navigate to another game in this or a different window, in whatever layout requires a quick click on that game's tab in the game bar. You can tell whether the game in question lives in the current window or another window through the 'detached' nature of the tabs.

Backgammon
Yes, backgammon has almost certainly found it's way into version 3.0. Initially it will be released in play money mode only to ensure players can get a good feel for it and provide some feedback before we hit the big red button and switch it on for players who think they've got the game to stake real money. Initially the format will be two player single games and match play but keep an eye out in the future for additions like big step tournaments and freerolls.

So there you have it, 3.0 in a nutshell. There are too many more subtle changes to describe like the addition of a few new player tags and now displaying how many players are online and some not so subtle changes like a whole new and improved look for the lobby but you'll just have to wait and see for them.

Remember to keep referring your friends, your family, heck just go up to strangers in the street and tell them about Poker.com, it's what I do.

Poker sites used in fraud scheme

Thursday, April 20, 2006

I found an article this morning from "The Local: Sweden's news in english" this morning on credit card fraud involving online poker.

It seems that according to their bank statements nine Skaraborg locals have each lost an average of 10,000 kronor playing internet poker, despite the fact that not one of them has visited the web sites.

Police identified a common thread they all shopped in the same place in Skövde and paid there with cards.

It seems a cashier at the shop wrote down both the account number and the card's security code, and then used the details in online poker rooms. The fraudster is thought to have registered with false names and addresses and then supplied the details from the cards.

The nine people who were affected have had their money back, and police say they have an idea who was behind the fraud.

"The banks aren't putting any pressure on the poker sites to begin checking that the card number matches the name - maybe that's a bit slack," said police inspector Christer Jönsson to TV 4 Skaraborg.

We at Poker.com agree that this case shows how lax some site's security is. It could never happen here due to our strict verification procedures. A lot of players seem to get a little bit annoyed when we request verification that they are the cardholder, but in the long run it is making sure that we have the safest site when it comes to fraud and credit card security.

The best thing to do is always use a third part wallet like Click2Pay or NETeller, so that only one trusted company has access to your credit card information and deposits and cash-outs are always a breeze.

Brunettes vs blondes, Tina's not happy!

Wednesday, April 19, 2006

I got an email from our poker goddess this morning, Poker.com's very own Queen of hearts Tina and I must say she was not happy.

I can definitely relate to what she was talking about because the same article that got under her skin, also got under mine.

All week the same news article has been bandied about, Paris Hilton is addicted to poker - "I'm obsessed with poker. It's my favorite game now. We love it. We play at tournaments in Vegas. I'm really lucky in Vegas - I always win!" says they always intelligent star.

Our good friend Tina didn't hold back on her assessment of the blonde heiress. "Who cares what that bimbo is addicted to, I mean really her sister Nicky at least has had some publicized success at the tables (She played for more than two hours outlasting many of the pros at her Nicky Hilton Caesars Palace New Years Eve poker tournament) and everyone knows that when Nicky is brunette she is clearly the sexiest Hilton sister in the world" wrote Tina.

And she wasn't finished there..... "Apart from Jen Harmon, what blondes do you see dominating the felt with large chip stacks and other things that rhyme with stacks? The best in the business are brunette, thats a fact, Jen Tilley, Annie Duke, Evelyn Ng, Erin Ness, Isabelle Mercier, Connie Kim, Shannon Elizabeth (winner of the Nicky Hilton Tournament), Karina Jett, and Liz Liu, all brunette and all goddesses."

I must say when it comes to blondes vs brunettes I side with our Poker Queen, and with pitures like that, who can argue? Keep an eye out for more of Tina at Poker.com very shortly.

In the meantime head over the the Poker.com forum and have your say on blondes vs brunettes in the world of poker. Who plays the best, who looks the best, who flat out is the best?

WPT World Championship - Day 1A

With nearly $15 million on offer, there is no better place to be right now than the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas. No wonder current tournament leader, Chip Jett, is all smiles. I would be to if I was on track to taking home a crisp $3.5 million.

However, with only the first day completed and still 535 of the original 610 entrants remaining, this championship is far from finished.

The tournament, which runs until April 24 and has a $25,500 buy-in, has attracted some of the world’s best players from over 40 different countries.

Among the players attending are the likes of Phil "The Unabomber" Laak, Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari, Barry Greenstein, Doyle Brunson, Jennifer Harman, Phil Ivey and Mike “The Mouth” Matusow.

In addition, the championship is playing host to a more personal battle, the 2006 WPT Player of the Year Title. Player’s Gavin Smith and Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, are currently locked in a 1-2 race for this year’s title.

However, Smith’s current 400-point lead over Mizrachi, due to his recent performance at the Mirage Poker Showdown, could now be in jeopardy after today’s early departure.

All the action from the Bellagio Casino will be televised on the Travel Channel from June 28.

Player Chip Count
1 - Chip Jett $185,000
2 - Tony Bloom $160,000
3 - Anh Van Nguyen $100,000
4 - Erick Lindgren $100,000
5 - Mark Seif $100,000
6 - T.J. Cloutier $97,000
7 - Brian Wilson $85,000
8 - Todd Brunson $80,000
9 - Alan Goehring $75,000
10 - Greg Mueller $75,000
11 - Mike Matusow $75,000
12 - Phil Hellmuth $65,000

Busted Pro’s
Sam Farha
Gavin Smith

Now thats my kind of poker holiday.

Are you the type of skier who prefer helicopters over gondolas?

Then maybe you should join Phil Gordon and Canadian Mountain Holidays on the Powder and Poker package for a week long adventure in skiing and poker in the mountains of British Columbia.

There are only 33 places available for the package that will be from April 22 through April 29 in 15,765 square kilometers (about 6,087 square miles) of mountains surrounding a lodge that has more amenities than a Hilton

Days will be spent flying around the Selkirk Mountains tackling the pristine ski runs.

Nights will be spent at the Adamant Lodge with lectures on how to become a world-class poker player from Phil gordon.

Each night the participants will play a no-limit Texas hold’em tournament and at the end of each week a champion will be crowned.

The trip is $5,000 for a twin room and $5,600 for a single using current exchange rates, and that includes entry into the weekly tournaments, transportation to and from Calgary International Airport, certified guides, the use of specially designed Heli-Skis and avalanche transceivers, and access to more than 100,000 vertical feet of runs.

With a sauna and whirlpool, relaxation masseuses, exercise equipment, and a climbing wall and two kinds of chefs, a pastry and a regular one, the lodge is not short on luxuries.

I know if I had holidays owing I would be all in!

Goodbye Puggy

A legend of Poker, Walter "Puggy" Pearson, died Wednesday in Las vegas, aged 77.

The 1973 World Series of Poker champion and member of the Poker Hall of Fame, was a fifth-grade dropout from Tennessee who played in the highest-stakes poker games in Las Vegas for more than 25 years.

He is credited with introducing Las Vegas to the "freeze-out" style of playing tournament poker, in which everyone starts with the same amount of chips and, as players are eliminated, the winner winds up with them all. The format has been adopted as the standard format in the World Series of Poker and most other major poker tournaments.

In 1973, Pearson took home $130,000 from a field of 13 players in the $10,000 buy-in, No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em World Championship — the first time the event was recorded for television.

Pearson also was known to show up at major poker tournaments in the 1970s and '80s in full Viking regalia, or costumed as a cowboy or an American Indian, complete with headdress and war paint.

The poker world has lost a colorful character, but he will be forever remembered as a legendary ambassador of the game.

Happy hunting for Victor Ramdin at Foxwoods

Victor RamdinVictor Ramdin has won first prize of $1,331,889 and captured the Foxwoods Poker Classic at Foxwoods Resort Casino, the scene of his last tournament win in 2004.

The six finalists were a mix of a pros and internet players, along with some unfamiliar faces. They had fought through a field of 431 players and were not afraid to mix it up early on at the final table.

It took only 40 minutes and 17 hands for both Bruce Kater and John Russell to be eliminated.

It wasn’t until hand 91 that Larry Klur was sent to the rail. All in with A-7 against the pocket fours of Ed Jordan, Klur caught an ace on the flop but Jordan got runner runner to make a straight.

Coming into the final table, Ed Jordan was the chip leader, however, he was unable to capitalize on that early advantage. Just ten hands after eliminating Larry Klur, Jordan was knocked out by Alex Jacob.

Heads up was a classic match up of experienced pro vs internet poker guru.

Online player Alex “Yahtzem” Jacob held the chip lead when they started heads up, however, the two got all of their chips in the middle quickly.

Jacob was unable to make a hand when it counted and was eliminated, earning $655,507 for his second place finish.

Victor took the win giving him the cash, entry to the $25,000 WPT Championship at the Bellagio and most importantly the title of Foxwoods Poker Classic Champion.

Sunday's Major Tournament Results

The Weekly $20,000 Freeroll

Just another Sunday and yet another Poker.com player has won themselves a handy addition to their bankroll after holding on to claim first place and $4,000.

Congratulations to StarConch, who fought back from a 3:1 chip deficit and claimed the win along with the prized $20K accolade for their player box. I honestly think sometimes the players are more interested in winning the accolade rather than the cash... I agree the trophy looks good, but give me $4k any day...

Final Table Action:
With only 7 of the original 867 players remaining, the $20k was still within anyone's reach, but this couldn't last for very long with the BB creeping to $16K.

The first hand to result in casualties played out like this:

Bullitpete - KK Vs Greenstn- A10 Vs Monkeylove05 - A7

The Flop: 2 9 7 Turn: A River: K

I could almost hear Bullitpete's heart stop when the turn hit, but thanks to the river giving him a set of Kings, he was now in second place.

With his new found chip stack Bullitpete didn't wait long, because with the very next hand was all-in again, this time against Mokeylove05.

Bullitpete - QJs Vs Mokeylove05 - A5os

The Flop: Qh 10h 10d Turn: 8d River: 4d

With the quick departure of 3 players, all at the hands of Bullitpete, the paced started to slow down and very few hands made it past the flop... That was until, Yappa27 called Bullitpete's all-in pre-flop, the result:

Bullitpete - 33 Vs Yappa27 - 55

The Flop: Q 6 8 The Turn: 4 and The River: 3

Again the river card was a blessing to Bullitpete, and with only 3 player remaining his chip lead of 3:1 was looking unbeatable, especially after one of the remaining three was knocked out by StarConch.

The Final 2 Players and Chip Count:
Bullitpete - 605K StarConch: 265K

This was really interesting to watch when the final table became Heads Up... I guess I wasn't the only one who thought this as over 100 members were watching the action.

The Final Hand:
Bullitpete - J5 Vs StarConch - JJ

Flop: 2 3 5 Turn: J River: 5

Both players landed the full house, but this time the river didn't save Bullitpete from StarConch's pocket JJ's

What I learnt about final tables today:
1. Pocket J's can win
2. How to lose from a 3:1 chip lead
3. And how to slap Bullitpete down in a tourney, thanks StarConch..

The $10,000 Guaranteed

Every week it makes me jealous that I cant enter this tournament... I mean think about the return on your $50 investment!

The prize pool is more than double what the buy-in generates and with only 94 entries it has to be the easiest way to win yourself a cool $3,000 in one sitting.

And just to top it off, you don't even have to buy-in for the full $50... Players can earn their entry by simply playing one of our daily $10K satellites.

The final hand in today's $10K was amazing...it went like this:

Raverke - Jd Vs Mal123 -

The Flop: 8d Qd As The Turn: 9d The River: 10d

With Raverke hitting a Queen High Straight Flush the nut hand was his, and with it first place.

Congratulations on a great win Raverke.

Showdown Poker Tour

Congratulations to 3 lucky players who managed to win their entry into the upcoming Showdown Final for a low $5. I wonder who is going to be winning that live poker tournament seat? It could still be you.

Charity Tournament

Gambitwd was this months winner and with the $75 from player donations and with Poker.com's matching this amount we have managed to raise $150.

I'd really love to see this tournament pulling some bigger numbers, for 2 reasons:
- so I can make a sizeable donation to the winner's choice of charity
- and to make Poker.com pay more...

Until next week good luck and I'll see you at the Final Table...

High Stakes Poker

Saturday, April 08, 2006

It's good to see that High Stakes Poker has been picked up for a second season by GSN.

The TV show, which broadcasts big money cash game play from the Golden Nugget Casino, gave great insight into the personalities that play in Las Vegas' biggest cash games. Minimum buy-in was $50,000 to sit at the table and it is slated to rise to $100,000 in season 2.

“As the only poker cash game on television, this series lets fans learn how the poker legends play when risking huge amounts of their own money,” said Rich Cronin, President and CEO of GSN.

“High Stakes Poker has exceeded our expectations and we are looking forward to the second season for this exciting, one of a kind poker show.”

The finale of the first season of High Stakes Poker airs this Monday, April 10th, at 9 PM.

Poker Players Alliance Rallies

Wednesday, April 05, 2006

There's a good article at SFgate.com about the Poker Players Alliance's efforts to lobby against proposed legislation to outlaw online gaming in the USA.

A few pro players along with with the alliance visited Capitol Hill this week to voice their opinions on the future of online poker's legality.

As with most things that involve the US congress, there are many hidden agendas and rumours of past and current corruption being spoken about in regard to this issue and the possible laws proposed. Let's hope most of the politicians still have some integrity and truly do act in the best interests of their electorate.

If you haven't already, go join the alliance >> http://www.pokerplayersalliance.org.

The Sunday Tournament Wrap

Monday, April 03, 2006

It's No April Fools Joke - You're Going to the WSOP '06!

The eigth lucky member of the Poker.com WSOP team has been decided after a well deserved win in Sunday's WSOP Grand Final.

Cashflow5, of Colorado, will be flying to Las Veags later this year to take his seat in the world's largest poker tourament and chancing his hand at a likely record poker tournament prize pool.

This once in a lifetime chance is thanks to one of our $5 WSOP Qualifier Sit'n'Go tournies.

I guess that's one of the things I love about poker so much. Anyone can become an instant celebrity, not not to mention a millionaire overnight, and it doesn't have to mean years of gruelling physical training. I mean what other game can just about any average Joe, college student, a mother of 5 or even a chiropractor get the opportunity to take on the world's best while on a global stage?

There isn't any...

But an unknown Aussie like Joe Hachem can go on to become the WSOP Champion! And to me that's something pretty unique and special to poker.

So a great big congratulations goes to Cashflow5 from the whole team at Poker.com and we wish you all the best in Vegas.

Here are some highlights from yesterday's Grand Final:

- With only three player's remaining out of an original field of 80 the game was still within anyone's reach.

- The first of the final three to be eliminated was, TotheRiver, who lost nearly all his ship stack to Zman523's pocket kings.

- Unfortuntaley for TotheRiver, who was forced all-in by the blinds the very next hand, he was up against Zman523 and KK again.

- With only 2 players remaining and a $12,500 package riding on possibly every hand, each player was a little hestitant to commit too many chips early on.

- But this couldn't last forever and so finally the deciding hand was played. Cashflow5 posted the small blind of $1500.00 and Zman523 posted the big blind of $3000.00

Cards Dealt:
CashFlow5 - As Js
Zman523 - Ah Jd

Cashflow5 Raised to $13500.00
Zman523 All In for $64034.00
Cashflow5 Calls $53534.00

The Flop - 5s jh 4s
The Turn - Ts
The River - Kc

Cashflow5 wins with a flush, ace high!
------------------
Weekly $20,000 Freeroll
Entries - 844 players

Final Placings:

1st Weakdraw $4,000
2nd AlexValencia $2,500
3rd Wacked $1,500
4th Modemk $1,250
5th Andi1000 $1,000

The last hand:
weakdraw - 2c,Ah
AlexValencia - 2h,Qh

The Flop - Qc,Kc,2s

Both Player's checked...

Turn - Ad

AlexValencia Bets $16000.00
Weakdraw Raised to $32000.00
AlexValencia Raised to $80000.00
Weakdraw All In for $578782.00
AlexValencia All In for $121218.00

River - 8s

Both players managed to hit two pair, but it was Weakdraw's A's that took first place and the trophey.
------------------
$10k Guaranteed
With a field of only 100 players this is one of the best value guaranteed tournaments on the web...

Also, it was great to see the final table filled with some familiar faces from around the site; all with their accolades showing, such as:

Afcajax - 20k freeroll winner
Sliekas - 4k freeroll winner
Cabinfever - 4k freeroll winner

1st Sliekas $3,000
2nd Pokerfriend101 $2,000
3rd TheFrenchies $1,000

Well done everyone and I hope to see you all fighting it out next Sunday as well.
