Young gun wins 2006 WPT Legends of Poker Title

Thursday, August 31, 2006

Before his 2006 World Poker Tour (WPT) Legends of Poker Main Event victory, young poker professional Joe Pelton's largest tournament success was a 2005 super-satellite entry into the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event.

The payout for that event was $25,700, a nice chunk of change, but mere pennies compared to the $1.5 million Pelton received for taking home the fourth tournament in the WPT season five schedule.

Although Pelton has cashed in two WSOP events in his young career, his win was unexpected, especially considering he was playing with some of the best players in the world at the 2006 Legends of Poker Main Event Final Table.

Defeating a group of six that contained WPT superstars Hoyt Corkins and Scotty Nguyen, Pelton is no longer flying under the radar. He joins the large group of young players who are making big names for themselves in major WPT events.

Pelton began the day in third chip position with $1,100,000, but drew an unfortunate seat, sandwiched between the two chips leaders, Frankie O'Dell ($3,880,000) and Kevin O'Donnell ($2,345,000).

O'Dell, who came into the final table as the chip leader after cracking Scotty Nguyen's pocket aces on the hand before the final table was set, was almost able to hold onto the chip lead for the entirety of the final table, not giving it away until play was heads-up.

A WSOP bracelet holder (2003 Omaha High-Low Split), O'Dell played well enough to win, removing his greatest threat (O'Donnell) when the two players were first and second in chips. The near double-up allowed O'Dell to enter three-handed play with a 2-1 chip lead over Hoyt Corkins and Pelton.

Not able to play many pots during the final table play, Corkins moved all-in over the top of a Pelton raise and was quickly called by the eventual champion. Corkins showed a pair of threes and Pelton flipped over a J-10 off-suit. Pelton hit a Jack on the flop, bouncing the popular Corkins from the final table.

After doubling through O'Dell, Pelton again found himself facing a significant re-raise when O'Dell moved all over the top with pocket Sixes. Continuing his fearless play, Pelton did not hesitate, calling with his A-7 offsuit. The Ace on the flop improved Pelton and the hand held up, giving the rising star his first major tournament victory.

Here are the final table finishes and payouts:

1.) Joe Pelton - $1,577,170

2.) Frankie O'Dell - $776,385

3.) Hoyt Corkins - $381,540

4.) Kevin O'Donnell - $226,260

5.) Randy Holland - $177,460

6.) Scotty Nguyen - $133,095

The WPT continues to roll on with the next stop coming in Atlantic City, New Jersey for the Borgata Poker Open. The televised $10,000 WPT event will begin on September 15.

WPT hits back

Monday, August 28, 2006

World Poker Tour group's legal counsel filed the company's first response this week in an interesting case brought by leading poker players who claim that the WPT tournament agreements place them at a personal and business disadvantage.

WPT has hired top legal council in Makan Delrahim of the Washington D.C. law firm of Brownstein, Hyatt and Farber, working in conjunction with Gibson Dunn and Crutcher. In his 22 page response Delrahim suggests that any of the players involved in the litigation that are affiliated with, or participate in the business decision making process of an online poker room are putting the WPT at an unfair advantage.

He asserts that by participating in profits reaped by accepting US bettors via their online poker site, these players put the WPT at a competitive disadvantage. This is because the WPT's online poker site, WPT Online.com bars US bettors due to the unclear legal situation surrounding online poker in the United States.

Delrahim additionally claims that, by promoting online poker in the U.S. and accepting U.S. customers, these players are subsidising the poker TV programming these online poker rooms produce, therefore competing with the WPT in its core business of producing poker television programming.

Andy Bloch, Annie Duke, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Phil Gordon, Joseph Hachem, Howard Lederer and Greg Raymer are the seven internationally famous poker players who brought the action against WPT earlier this year, announcing it at a widely publicised press conference.

Their submission is that WPT tournament pre-conditions required them to waive rights to the use of their images and names to promote products and video games. The claim is also made that WPTE colluded with member casinos to prevent players from entering their tournaments unless they forfeited their rights.

Delrahim denies any wrongdoing, saying: "WPTE denies that it has violated the antitrust laws or engaged in any unlawful conduct whatsoever. As will be shown in the course of this litigation, Plaintiffs' complaint mis-states the facts regarding WPTE and its relationships with the casinos that host World Poker Tour events and mis-characterises the state of the poker industry."

WPT's general counsel, Adam Pliska said the company believes that the action is misleading and without merit. The case continues in the United States District Court, Central District.

Daniel Negreanu published a scathing report on this on his blog, clearly unhappy with the approach taken by these players. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Jamie Gold's WSOP winnings frozen

Thursday, August 24, 2006

A Nevada judge has frozen half of the $12 million US top prize after a Gold acquaintance sued, saying the two men agreed to split the winnings. Bruce Crispin Leyser, a Los Angeles-based TV development executive, alleges in a suit filed Monday in Clark County District Court that Gold, a former Hollywood talent agent, agreed in July to split his winnings in exchange for Leyser helping him find celebrities to play in the main event while wearing the label of an offshore Internet gambling site.

The site paid the $10,000 entry fee for Gold, who beat 8,772 players to win the world's largest poker tournament.

Leyser alleges he fulfilled his end of the deal - getting Scooby Doo star Matthew Lillard and Punk'd comedian Dax Shepard to wear the brand - but claimed Gold has refused to hand over $6 million.

Gold said in a statement issued through his lawyers that he was "disappointed" that "a person he has only known since July of this year has elected to file litigation rather than continue the parties' discussions in an effort to find a resolution to this matter."

After winning the tournament, Gold said he would share the money with friends and supporters.

Clark County District Judge Kathy Hardcastle issued a temporary restraining order Monday preventing the Rio hotel-casino, site of the poker tourney, from disbursing $6 million for 15 days. A hearing was set for Sept. 1 to determine whether the freeze would continue.

Leyser said he has evidence to support his claim - an Aug. 10 voicemail left by Gold just hours before play began at the final table.

"I promise you - you can keep this recording on my word - there's no possible way you're not going to get your half ... after taxes," it says, according to the lawsuit. "You've trusted me the whole way, you can trust me a little bit more. I promise you there's no way anybody will go anywhere with your money. It's your money."

Leyser's lawyer in Las Vegas, Richard Schonfeld, called the case "exceptionally strong."

"That's how we were able to obtain a temporary restraining order freezing the money," he said.

This could prove to be costly little agreement for Gold!

Texas Hold 'Em Poker for Xbox 360 free for two days

One for the gamers out there with Xbox 360's, Texas Hold'em Poker is free on Xbox Live Arcade, the only catch is you have to grab it fast.

The game is going to be released at 1 a.m. PDT (GMT-7) on Wednesday, and will continue to be a free download for 48 hours, until 1:01 a.m. PDT on Friday. At that time, it will sell for 800 Microsoft points, or $10. So be sure to give this a download before the end of the week, or you'll miss out on the freebie.

The game is going to come equipped with a "persistent bankroll" that will hopefully keep people betting realistically; once that bankroll is gone, you can only play in smaller buy-in games until you can raise enough cash. Still, expect a lot of wild play as gamers new to poker flood the Xbox Live service. Texas Hold 'em also offers multiplayer support for up to eight gamers, three modes of gameplay (Standard Games, Scenarios, and Tournaments), achievements, extensive online leaderboards and statistics, and high-definition graphics.

While obviously its not the same as sitting down at a Poker.com sit'n'go, its still poker, and how often do you get freebies from Xbox!

World Strip Poker Champion Crowned

Sunday, August 20, 2006

A week after the record 8,773 entrants lined up in the 2006 WSOP Main Event, nearly 200 entrants put their modesty on the line at the inaugural World Strip Poker Championship.

Held in Cafe Royal in central London, the event had 10,000 pounds ($18,844USD) for first place to go along with the title of World Series Strip Poker Champion.

John Young, a 32-year-old freelance writer from Slough, a town just west of London, secured victory after an eight hour competition, beating a truly international field.

Entrants of both sexes from 12 different countries took part in the event which doubled as an official Guinness World Record attempt.

Aside from strict rules governing the poker play, there were clear guidelines on the stripping element -- most importantly that each player started the match by wearing five items of clothing supplied by the organisers.

Each contestant was given a towel to sit on and to cover themselves when naked, but only after they had stripped completely.

GSN Announces 3rd season of High Stakes Poker

Wednesday, August 16, 2006

With anticipation growing weekly for our fix of High Stakes Poker in the office, the announcement of a 3rd season is music to the ears of several Poker.com employees.

Clearly we are not alone, and with the viewer-ship constantly growing during the current second season it was merely a formality to get plans for a 3rd season underway.

The first point of order was to invite the latest World Champion, Jamie Gold to be a part of the next series, after all with his recent win he can surely afford the $100,00 buy-in.

Although there has been no location or additional players yet chosen for the event, the taping of the third season will start in October. GSN also announced that, at the conclusion of the second season of "High Stakes Poker", there will be an encore broadcast of the first season that will begin on September 18th at 8PM (Eastern Time).

For now if you haven't seen any of the High Stakes Poker action look it up, it's definately my must see TV of week

Jamie Gold WSOP Backstory

Monday, August 14, 2006

We're not sure if this is true, but it's interesting nonetheless. There's a story on Hollywood Interrupted about Jamie Gold and the promises he made to people before the World Series.

Apparently he's only going to be able to keep a fraction of the $12million he won if he keeps his word and pays his debts.

The fact he owes money to people is not that much of a scandal, as there's plenty of players that would have deals in place if they cash.

But if he doesn't pay up.... That would be news, and a sad day for poker players everywhere.

I wish schools taught kids more math

Sunday, August 13, 2006

I am just posting this here so our standard response to anyone questioning the Poker.com RNG can be to give them a link to this page. Then they can learn for themselves how ridiculous some of their theories and statements are.

Read about Random Number Generators.

Read about Randomness Theory.

Read about Statistics.

Read about Probability.

This is who tests our RNG.

This is where Poker.com has a gaming license.

This is a site where you can ask real people about the legitimacy of online gaming companies
.

This is where you can talk to other Poker.com players about your experiences and hopefully find out that we're actually very nice people that try to be fair in everything we do.

Sorry for having to make this post, but I'm at my wits with regard to the best way to deal with players that think online poker is rigged. Sometimes their stupidity and paranoia is simply amazing. It must be horrible to live in fear of others ripping you off, and to not realise salvation is just a few paragraphs of reading away....

WSOP 2006 Recap

It's finally over. The World Series of Poker has finished for another year and we saw a few very memorable things happen.
  • Phil Hellmuth claimed his 10th bracelet to join Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson as the all time leaders. He almost claimed his 11th in the final event, finishing 3rd which was enough to see him finish the 2006 WSOP as the overall points leader, with the most final table appearances.
  • Joe Hachem proved he was not just a one tournament wonder, making it to 2 final tables, winning $347,282 and finishing 5th in the overall points race. Who knows what would have happened if his AA wasn't cracked in the main event...
  • Jeff Madsen emerged as a new young poker star, winning two bracelets, making 4 final tables and taking home $1.5 million, all at just 21 years of age.
  • Jamie Gold proved that you can keep the chip lead for a long time in the main event, fighting off all challengers and busting an incredible 7/8 players on the final table to win the biggest ever prize in poker history.
  • Chip Reese, often regarded as the world's best all around poker player, proved he could be just that by winning the $50,000 buy in H.O.R.S.E. event.
  • Harrahs drew a ridiculous line in the sand by banning all '.com' advertising at the WSOP, but allowed online gaming companies to advertise using '.net' domains.
  • Poker.com bailed out the Check'n'Raise poker players that had their WSOP dreams shattered.
  • 3 players who play at Poker.com made final tables, and one won a bracelet. Together they cashed for over $600,000.
It was our first World Series of poker, and we look forward to sending our players to many more. It was great to meet the players that qualified through Poker.com. We'll be adding you all to a new 'Hall of Fame' section on the site very soon.

This month, there are Borgata Poker Open WPT seats up for grabs. The first one is being given away in a $250 buy-in tournament at 15:15 today. All new depositors can get into a free tournament giving away a $12,500 package by using coupon code WPTFREEROLL.

Best of luck to everyone playing today.

From wire to wire: victory for Jamie Gold

Friday, August 11, 2006

It never seemed in doubt and a dominating final hand proved it.

Continuing the trend of talking heavily during opponents decisions, on a flop of Q-8-5 Gold talked Paul Wasicka into calling his all in bet, and when the cards were flipped you felt it was over. Wasicka's pocket 10's were behind the pair of Queens of Gold, and the way Gold drew out all day it just didnt seem possible he could lose from there.

With only a few outs an ace on the turn took all hope from Wasicka and a 4 on the river sealed it.

Wisicka takes home $6,102,499 for his fine efforts.

Gold has had an amazing run, leading the field for the last 3 days of play. He brought a massive chip stack to the final table and any time he dropped a few chips he soon made them up.

Congratulations to Jamie Gold, the 2006 World Champion from the World Series of Poker.

Binger goes out

With a flop of 6-10-5 Jamie Gold moves all in with 4-3, Paul Wasicka goes into the tank but folds and action comes around to Michael Binger who quickly calls with A-10.

Amazingly Gold catches his 7 on the turn and Binger is on his way home with $4,123,310.

It was a great run For Binger who was short stacked all day, notably crippled hard after doubling up early on, but he fought back and hung in there and has made quite a nice payday for himself.

As we go to heads up the chip count is as follows:

1 Jamie Gold 64,000,000 Up $7,000,000
2 Paul Wasicka 11,000,000 Down $-10,500,000

And then there was 3

Allen Cunningham pushed all in with pocket 10's and was quickly called by Jamie Gold with K-J.

Gold, who has missed only one coin flip today, spiked a king on the flop, and with no help on the board Cunningham was done.

Thought of as the biggest challenge to Gold's huge stack goes home with $3,628,513.

I've mentioned it a few timed today and it continues to be a surprise, as Michael Binger continues to slide up the payouts and is now guaranteed at least $4 million.

The chip count now stands as follows:

1 Jamie Gold 48,675,000 Up $1,175,000
2 Paul Wasicka 17,000,000 Down $-2,000,000
3 Michael Binger 14,800,000 Down $-600,000

Chip count at the break

The players have gone to break, and the fold to any bet policy has continued.

There was one very interesting hand when Gold re-raised Cunningham with the board showing J463. Cunningham went deep into the tank with lots of chatter between the two players, Gold was either trying to bait Cunningham to call or to fold, it wasnt exactly clear, what was clear was that Cunningham definatly had a piece of the board, but in the end not a big enough piece, and he folded.

At the break the chip count is as follows:

1 Jamie Gold 47,500,000 Down $-3,500,000
2 Paul Wasicka 19,000,000 Up $7,000,000
3 Michael Binger 15,400,000 Up $2,100,000
4 Allen Cunningham 7,600,000 Up $100,000

Chip Count Update

Its become all about survival at the 2006 WSOP, with 2nd-4th all with similar chip stacks, and leader Gold way out in front the table has really tighened up. Any bet from Gold brings a quick fold from the other players.

1 Jamie Gold 51,000,000 Up $2,500,000
2 Michael Binger 13,300,000 Up $500,000
3 Allen Cunningham 13,000,000 Down $-300,000

Short stack comes up short

Cunningham raised, Gold called from the small blind, and then Butler moved all in from the big blind. Both players called the short-stack and the flop was J 6 5 – both checked.

Turn was a deuce and when Gold bet heavily Cunningham got out of the way.

Gold showed KJ for top pair and Butler rolled over pocket 4s and he was drawing slim.

River was a Ten and Butler was sent home in 5th with $3,216,182

Michael Binger continues his big move and is serious looming as the 2006 version of Aussie Joe Hachem. Last to first is going to be tough against Jamie Gold's huge stack, but a few hours ago we thought Binger was on his way home.....

Binger Doubles Through Wasicka

Binger moved all in and was loosly called by Wasicka. As the cards were flipped Binger was quick to his feet when he saw he was ahead with his pocket kings dominating Wasickas K-Q.

Wasicka got a little hope with a Queen on the flop, but with no further help the pot went to Bingers big pocket pair.

2 Paul Wasicka 21,000,000 Up $10,000,000

Gold finally takes a beat

After a flop of K-Q-2 Jamie Gold check-raised Paul Wasicka giving Wasicka a big decision to make, apparently it was an easy decision to make as Wasicka quickly pushed all in and Gold called.

When the cards were turned over Gold was once again jumping from his seat cheering but the turn card put him back in his seat, when Wasicka caught his 10.

A blank 8 on the river sealed the deal and Wasicka moved into a very strong position.

Butler doubles up

Three times in a row, Three times in a row was the chant from Rhet Butler as Paul Wasicka called his all in bet, and all his chanting paid off.

Butler was always in good shape with A-10 vs Wasicka's pocket 8's, a Q-K-10 flop put him in front, and k-3 on the turn and river sealed the deal.

Play about to start

Well after watching ESPN's recap of Raymer's and Hachem's wins in 2004 and 2005 respectivly Im absolutly pumped for the rap up of this years title.

Watching Kanter blow that massive lead in 2005 shows you anything can happen, Hachem himself came from last in chips.

Could one of the short stacks, Rhet Butler or Michael Binger, already proving to be rather lucky, storm all the way to the top.

Hopefully we will see some furious action after this break.

Richard Lee falls hard!

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Whenever the two chip leaders tangle feathers fly, and the last hand was no exception.

Jamie Gold re-raised a Richard Lee raise and Lee decided to make a move and pushed all in, Jamie Gold once again yelped and jumped out of his chair as Lee showed pocket Jacks dominated by Gold's pocket Queens.

With no help form the board Lee quickly fell from 2nd in chips to out of the tournament, taking home $2,803,851 for his troubles.

Once again though its the short stacks that are smiling, while Gold streaks out in front the short stacks just keep sneaking up the payouts, with the last two bust outs coming from 2nd and 5th in chips.

Binger Doubles Through Cunningham

Alan Cunninham recklessly pushed all in with pocket dueces and was called by Michael Binger with A-6.

A monster flop of 4-A-6 came down putting Binger well in front, and while a 5 on the turn gave Cunningham a couple more outs, a king came down on the river and Binger was safe.

That hand moved Binger up into 5th in chips and dropped Cunningham to 4th.

Big Chop

Richard Lee raises, Binger re-raises and pushes all in, the action comes around to Jamie Gold who re-raised again. Lee folds and Binger and gold go heads up.

Both players looked impressed with their hands, and rightfully so, both players had pocket Kings.

The only hope was a four flop flush, and with two hearts on the flop Binger had a feint hope, but a club on the turn killed the hand and the pot was chopped.

On a side not the river card was an ace, and Richard Lee actually folded AQ. Lucky for Binger that Gold re-raised so heavily and pushed Lee out of the hand.

Binger Doubles Down

And just like that Binger is the short stack again.

He pushed all in again, this time with A-9 and Paul Wasicka made the call with A-J.

AA8 on the flop gave Binger few outs, and 5-T on the turn and river meant Wasicka's Jack kicker played and Binger was back to the bottom of the leader board.

Michael Binger Doubles Up

Binger moved all in with A-10 on a QJ8 flop, Cunningham made the call with A-Q and looked in great shape.

A King on the turn crushed Cunningham who didnt even wait for the river to start counting out his chips to pay off Binger.

Erik Friberg Eliminated!

Erik Friberg has been eliminated in 8th place after dicing with chip leader Jamie Gold.

Friberg went all in pre-flop with pocket jacks, everyone folded around to Gold who quickly called. Gold lept with a yelled when the cards where flipped and he was clearly ahead with his pocket Queens.

The flop and turn were all low cards helping no one, and with Gold calling out "no paint no paint" the dealer flips over the river, and it is paint, but its a Queen making Golds trips and eliminating Friberg.

Gold's heart must've been in is mouth when he caught sight of that paint!!!

Final Table Begins

Its been a marathon performance by the players at the final table and after today we will have the 2006 World Champion crowned.

Play commenced earlier with the blinds set at $80,000 / $160,000 and with an ante of $20,000. Enough to make any pot worth taking down.

Jamie Gold was straight into the action and continued to build his healthy chip stack as he won the first pot of the day.

Hand: First Hand of the Day
- Doug Kim raises to $480,000 in late position
- Jamie has Doug covered 6:1
- Jamie Gold re-raises to $1,480,000
- Doug Kim folds

Shortly after, Dan Nassif, was the first player to be eliminated from the final table, but will be taking home $1,566,858 for 9th place.

The knockout hand came courtesy of Jamie Gold and his set of quacking 2's

Hand: Quack, Quack!
- Jamie Gold in early position calls
- Dan Nassif is on the button
- He raises to $700k
- Gold calls & checks in the dark
Flop: 5s 3s 2c
- Nassif moves all-in
- Gold calls
Showdown: Gold 2h2s Vs AcKd
Turn: Ah River: 10s

Gold wins with a set of 2's and Nassif departs the final table with over $1.5 million dollars in his pocket. Does this mean an early retirement for our 33-year-old account executive?

Currently play is still in the first level for the final day, at 32, and here is how the chip stacks are shaping up:

Jamie Gold $31,600,000

Allen Cunningham $16,800,000

Richard Lee $10,000,000

Erik Friberg $9,000,000

Doug Kim $6,600,000

Paul Wasicka $6,500,000

Rhett Butler $4,400,000

Michael Binger $3,000,000

We might be seeing some more all-in action very soon, as the short stacked players start to feel the bite of the ever increasing antes.

Final Table Players

Wednesday, August 09, 2006

Here are the profiles of the players that will be playing at the final table of the WSOP main event. I was cheering for Jamie 'Ari' Gold before, but I also have a soft spot for the only recognised pro at the table - Allen Cunningham. It'd be good for the pros to get some pride back by having one of their own take down the big one for a change.

Richard LeeSEAT 1: Richard Lee
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
Chip Count: 11,820,000

Richard Lee a 55-year-old investor from San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. This is the second straight year that Richard has played at the World Series of Poker. This is his first time to cash and first time ever to make it to a final table. Prior to this, Richard’s best poker finish was 12th place at last year’s Grand Slam of Poker held in Los Angeles. Richard is married and has three grown children. When asked what he wants the rest of the world to know about him, Richard said, “I love my family, my country, and San Antonio!” He arrives third today in the chip count.

Erik FribergSEAT 2: Erik Friberg
Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden
Chip Count: 9,605,000

Erik Friberg is a 23-year-old professional online poker player from Stockholm, Sweden. He represents a growing legion of Scandinavian poker superstars who have come to the WSOP and won prize money. In fact, Sweden now ranks as the most successful country in terms of number of players compared to in-the-money finishers. Erik plays mostly on the Internet and won the Swedish Poker Challenge in 2005. His poker nickname, “Lilar” means, appropriately enough, “gambler.” Prior to taking up poker for a living, he was a college student. Erik is already guaranteed at least a million-and-a-half dollars in what is his first year to play at the World Series. He arrives fourth today in the chip count.

Paul WasickcaSEAT 3: Paul Wasickca
Hometown: Westminster, Colorado
Chip Count: 7,970,000

Paul Wasickca is a 25-year-old poker player who used to work as a bartender and restaurant manager. He was born in Dallas, Texas -- and now lives in Westminster, Colorado. Paul started playing poker about two years ago and has already cashed six times at major poker tournaments, including 14th place in a previous No-Limit Hold’em event held at this year’s World Series. His poker nickname is “Kwick Fish.” When asked what he wants the rest of the world to know about him, Paul said, “I have the best friends and family anyone could ask for.” He arrives fifth today in the chip count.

Dan NassifSEAT 4: Dan Nassif
Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri
Chip Count: 2,600,000

Dan Nassif is a 33-year-old account executive from St. Louis, Missouri. Dan took his vacation time away from work to enter and play in this year’s World Series. That certainly turned out to be a terrific decision. Not too many vacations pay the kind of money Dan is sure to make over this two-week period. Nassif has played fabulous poker in this championship event, although he has frequently been one of the shorter stacks at his table. He arrives with the biggest test of anyone today – ninth place in the chip count.

Allen CunninghamSEAT 5: Allen Cunningham
Hometown: Las Vegas, Nevada
Chip Count: 17,770,000

Allen Cunningham is a 29-year-old professional poker player from Las Vegas, Nevada. He is easily the most accomplished poker player of today’s final nine. Allen has won four WSOP gold bracelets – for Seven-Card Stud in 2001, Deuce-to-Seven Lowball in 2002, No-Limit Hold’em in 2005, and another No-Limit Hold’em championship in 2006. Allen burst onto the poker scene back in 1998 as one of the young guns – along with Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Layne Flack, John Juanda, and others – who have collectively revolutionized the game of poker with their talent and ambition. A victory today would seal Cunningham’s place as perhaps the greatest player in the game today. He arrives second in the chip count.

Michael BingerSEAT 6: Michael Binger
Hometown: Atherton, California
Chip Count: 3,140,000

Michael Binger is a 29-year-old part-time poker pro originally from Delray Beach, Florida, who also has career ambitions as a theoretical physicist. He now lives in Atherton, California. Just two months ago, he earned his PhD in physics from Stanford University. This is the second year that Michael has played at the World Series. He made the final table of the $1500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em event – finishing sixth and earning $100,000. Michael has a major challenge ahead of him today, as he arrives eighth in the chip count.

Doug KimSEAT 7: Douglas Kim
Hometown: Martsdale, New York
Chip Count: 6,770,000

Doug Kim is a 22-year-old financial consultant from Martsdale, New York. He was born in Yonkers, New York. Doug recently graduated from Duke University with a degree in economics. He also enjoys video games when he is not playing poker. Doug primarily plays online poker. This is his first time ever to cash -- not just at the World Series -- but in a poker tournament. Doug arrives today sixth in the chip count.

Jamie GoldSEAT 8: Jamie Gold
Hometown: Malibu, California
Chip Count: 25,650,000

Jamie Gold is a 36-year-old television producer from Malibu, California. He was born in New York City. Prior to running his own studio, Gold was a Hollywood agent with an impressive stable of talented actors -- including “The Sopranos” star James Gandolfini and “Desperate Housewives” co-star Felicity Huffman. Gold has also represented and credits much of his poker success to mentor Johnny Chan. This is Jamie’s 15th time to cash in a major poker tournament, and his first time ever to make it to a WSOP final table. He has been the most dominant player in the championship event over the past four days – and has been the chip leader since Day Three. Gold is dedicating himself to winning the world championship for his ailing father, who is in the late stages of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He says, “I want to make him proud for the little time he has left.” Gold is the chip leader at today’s final table.

Rhett ButlerSEAT 9: Rhett Butler
Hometown: Rockville, Maryland
Chip Count: 4,815,000

Rhett Butler is a 44-year-old insurance agent from Rockville, Maryland. Originally from Baltimore, Rhett is married and has three children. He holds a college degree from James Madison University and has been playing poker for 25 years. Incredibly, this is his first time ever to cash in a poker tournament – and he’s now a millionaire. Rhett says proudly, “I’m playing in this tournament for my family and friends.” Or, as Clark Gable would say, “Frankly my dear – I DO give a damn.” Rhett Butler starts off seventh in the chip count.

We'll keep you updated with how the action progresses once play starts again tomorrow.

The Jamie Gold Show

As play continues in Harrah's Jamie Gold series of Poker (you might as well name it after him at this point) early leader Jamie Gold continues to run away out in front of the pack.

More than 2:1 over his nearest rival, Allen Cunningham who has continued to chase hard, Gold is in a very commanding position. I wouldn't expect to see Gold tangling with Cunningham over too many hands.

1 Jamie Gold 30,000,000
2 Allen Cunningham 14,000,000
3 Michael Binger 5,800,000
4 Erik Friberg 5,600,000
5 Paul Wasicka 5,200,000
6 Doug Kim 4,800,000
7 Richard Lee 4,650,000
8 Rhett Butler 4,500,000
9 Dan Nassif 4,350,000
10 Leif Force 4,000,000
10 John Magill 4,000,000
12 Fred Goldberg 2,800,000

Down to two six handed tables every player remaining is now a millionaire, the seating positions are as follows:

Featured Table

1. Leif Force
2. Rhett Butler
3. Doug Kim
4. Jamie Gold
5. Allen Cunningham
6. Eric Friberg

Table 1
1. Richard Lee
2. Michael Binger
3. Dan Nassif
4. John Magill
5. Paul Wasicka
6. Fred Goldberg

Players are just back from a dinner break and play will begin with Level 30, 10K ante with 50K / 100K blinds.

Down to 18

Tuesday, August 08, 2006

The world series of poker is down to 18 players left. The big mover in the field is pro, Allen Cunningham (pictured winning a bracelet in 2005), who has moved up to 2nd place behind Jamie Gold.

Allen CunninghamHere are the chip counts.

1 Jamie Gold 18.2M
2 Allen Cunningham 13.4M
3 Dan Nassif 6.2M
4 David Einhorn 5.94M
5 Rhett Butler 5.7M
6 John Magill 5.3M
7 Erik Friberg 5.2M
8 Doug Kim 4.9M
9 Michael Binger 4.68M
10 Sirious Jamshidi 3.65M
11 Leif Force 3.15M
12 William Thorsson 2.92M
13 Jeffrey Lisandro 2.82M
14 Luke Chung 2.145M
15 Kevin Aaronson 1.8M
16 Fred Goldberg 1.7M
17 Richard Lee 950K
18 Paul Wasicka 950K

Last year Joe Hachem was short stacked for most of the final three tables, so nobody is out of the race yet. And they all will earn a healthy pay-packet....

That prize breakdown again.

1 - $12,000,000
2 - $6,102,499
3 - $4,123,310
4 - $3,628,513
5 - $3,216,182
6 - $2,803,851
7 - $2,391,520
8 - $1,979,189
9 - $1,566,858
10-12 - $1,154,527
13-15 - $907,128
16-18 - $659,730

$659,730 isn't bad for finishing 18th in an event! Imagine what the payout could be if Harrah's didn't steal $5.2million from the players via their 6% juice! The millions in TV revenue, sponsorship dollars and increased casino business isn't enough? You need to greedily take more from the players that make your event what it is today?

Without the players you'd have nothing Harrahs - it's criminal that you take over $5 million from them in this event alone considering all of the other money you are making through hosting the WSOP.

Who is Jamie Gold?

Monday, August 07, 2006

Jamie Gold has been chip leader at the 2006 World Series of Poker for the last two days. At the end of Day 5 he has over 7 million in chips. So who is he? His bio reads something like this ..

Jamie Gold started his career in the entertainment business at the age of 16 as an intern at the J. Michael Bloom & Associates Talent Agency in NYC. He attended the University of New York at Albany, graduating with honors. Moving to Los Angeles in the summer of 1991 to study Entertainment Law at UCLA, he was immediately hired by ICM Talent Agency. He soon made the move to the boutique Harter Manning Woo Talent Agency to find his niche discovering new talent and developing the careers of artists. After being honored as the youngest franchised agent in the industry before his 21st birthday, in two years he became the head of HMW’s Motion Picture/TV Department.

In 1993, he worked nights/weekends without pay at Universal to learn the production system of studios. In 1994, Gold then co-founded the management/production entity Gold/Bouchard. With 5 managers representing actors, writers, directors, producers and musicians, they packaged projects with high profile entities such as Silver Pictures and Phoenix Pictures.

In 1996, Gold embarked on a solo venture, JMG Management, a significantly smaller and more personalized company.

Gold is known for discovering, nurturing, and launching the careers of some of the most respected and successful artists in the entertainment business. His impressive list of current and former clients include actors James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Jimmy Fallon (Sat.Night Live, TAXI), Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels,), actor/singers Brandy and Ray-J (Moesha), Hip Hop Superstar/actor Pras (The Fugees, Ghetto Supastar), pop-star/producer/actor Donnie Wahlberg (Boomtown, The Sixth Sense, NKOTB), actresses Kristin Davis (Sex and The City), LisaRaye (All of Us, The Players Club), Melora Walters (Boogie Nights, Magnolia), Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Natasha Henstridge (The Whole Nine Yards, Species, She Spies), Hosts Colin Malone (Colin After Dark, Colin’s Sleazy Friends), Dr. Jan Adams (The Other Half, Plastic Surgery Before and After) , and Roger Lodge (Blind Date, Talk Soup), actors David Straitharn (The Sopranos, L.A. Confidential), Maurice Benard (Emmy Winning star of General Hospital, Desi and Lucy) Lane Davies (The Practice, General Hospital, Santa Barbara) Vanessa Marcil (Las Vegas, General Hospital, The Rock) and three time Tony Award winner Hinton Battle (Miss Saigon, Sophisticated Ladies, The Tap Dance Kid). Los Angeles Laker and 3 time NBA champion Rick Fox (He Got Game, HBO’s OZ) as well as Poker legend Johnny Chan.

In 2006 Gold began working with the team at Buzznation on the production of several television projects. As head of production, Gold is committed to several projects thru 2008.

He currently resides in Malibu, CA.

Day 5 - Quick Break

Players are moving out for a quick 20 minute break.

There are 49 left and we are told they will play for one more level or until there are 45 remaining.

Play will resume at Level 24 with $12,000/$24,000 blinds and a $4,000 ante.

Players run for a smoke hoping to get more than one puff before being called back to the gaming floor.

Day 5 - Rio Penalty for Eric Molina

Eric Molina makes a half pot bet into a 200,000 pot. Current chip leader Jamie Gold raises to $300,000 and Eric pushes all in for about $700k more.

Molina starts with the banter "Just fold, I have the best hand, stop wasting time" and then throws his "all-in" chip at Gold. Jamie Gold throws it back at Molina and eventually folds.

Molina takes down a huge pot that takes Jamie out of the chip lead. Erik Molina is removed from the table when he drops the "F-Bomb" at the table. Jamie dobs him in to the floor manager and Molina hits the rail for 10 minutes.

As Molina walks away the banter continues, he's telling Gold just how much he loved taking the chips from him.

This puts Erik Friberg in the chip lead with a little over 6.5m in chips.

Day 5 - Updates

We just saw the elimination at 54th place, Scott O'Reilly hit the next pay level and receives $164,932.

Allen Cunningham was able to double his stack and now sits with around 1.2 million in chips. The chip leader Jamie Gold has moved further up the ladder with 6.75m, but trailed very closely by Erik Friberg at 6.60m in chips. These two players have double the chip stack of the 3rd place William Thorsson with 3.25m chips.

We're still on level 23, at 10k/20k/3k. There are 52 players left. If the night plays down to around 27 players we will be 2 days ahead of schedule.

Event #41 No-Limit Hold’em

Current chip leader, Rafael "Raphl" Perry, is well on the way to taking home his second WSOP bracelet for 2006.

His first bracelet win came on July 18, in the $1,500 pot limit Omaha event, where the seasoned poker pro was able to walk away with $200,000 in cash.

In 2006, Ralph represented Russia at the inaugural Intercontinental Poker Championship but was eliminated in the semi-finals.

As of July 2006, Perry's live tournament earnings exceed $1,400,000, but if his good fortune can continue into Day 2, that amount will only continue to grow.

2nd James Henson - $88,300
3rd John Dibella - $61,700

Day 5 - World Series of Poker

Sunday, August 06, 2006

We are back after a 90 minute dinner break, play resumed just after 8:30PM and we've already seen some very aggressive moves by the short stacked players desperate to double up.

Another one out! One of the short stacks Rueben Peters pushes all in with a suited JTh and gets a call from Dustin Holmes with a suited A7d. The board is very favorable to Dustin when the flop gives him an open ended straight draw 9s, 8h, 6d. The turn brings a 10c and Dustin knocks out Reuben in 65th position. Reubin takes home $90,713.

Day 5 - Dinner Break

Play is just about to restart after the dinner break, there are 7 tables left with only 65 players remaining.

We are are a full day ahead of schedule now, if play continues like this we may see a final table 2 days earlier than expected.

Play finished up before the break at level 23, with Blinds at 10,000 / 20,000 with a 3,000 ante.

The payouts have almost reached $100,000 with the last 7 eliminated receiving $90,713 each.

Jamie Gold remains the chip leader with a remarkable 5,200,000 in chips.

Professional Allen Cunningham is still grinding out, he is now one of the short stacks with around half a million in chips.

Annie Duke busted earlier in 88th position taking home around $50,000.

Day 4 Recap

Well it looks like we are going to be one day ahead of the WSOP schedule as Day 4 was supposed to bring 600 players down to 300. When the day started with only 481 players it wasn't going to be too long until we hit that 300 mark.

Play finished up here around 1:30AM, with only 135 left (about 165 more players are out than expected). Play will continue tomorrow with only 135 players, paying around $47,000 at this position. Day 6 was supposed to take 150 players down to 60, so we could see day 5 run well ahead of time and make that goal a day earlier.

Jamie Gold finishes the day as chip leader with 3,700,000 in chips.

2005 World Series of Poker Champion, Joseph Hachem was eliminated in 238th position when his pocket aces were cracked on a three-way, all-in when Andrew Schreibman spiked a set of Jacks on the flop. Hachem's hand did not improve and he left the tournament taking home $42,882.

Hachem's Aussie rival Mark Vos (2006 bracelet winner in the $2,000 No Limit Hold'em Event) busted early today in 457th position and will take another $26,389 home to Australia.

WSOP Robbery

Saturday, August 05, 2006

A police warrant has been released after the WSOP main event fell victim to a despicable crime... The gaming floor of the main event was interrupted when a man believed to be in his mid 20's and working alone committed a daring robbery in broad daylight.

The suspect is not believed to be armed and dangerous, but police are advising that he should be approached with extreme caution as the suspect is suffering from temporary insanity.... or better known as: ON TILT!

After being eliminated from the main event one player decided to risk his everything and reached across the table to steal the highly valuable dealer button...

Who knows why, but after snatching the button our suspect ran from the building and has not been seen or heard of since.

Play Begins for Day 4

Play has commenced for Day 4 of the main event and we will see the blinds starting at level 16 (2,000 / 4,000) and an ante of 500. Its this killer ante that will be forcing the short stacks to play average starting hands and push all-in as the day progresses. But, with all players guaranteed at least $26,389 for 4 days work, it's not the end of the world if today is your last.

Day 4 Morning Highlights:

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie... Oi Oi Oi!
Reigning champion, Joe Hachem, has managed to double his stack early on in today's play and still keep his dream of back-to-back wins alive.
- Late position bets 15,000
- Hachem in the SB
- After a moments hesitation he pushes all-in for 105,000
- Opponent thinks about Joe's play
- He makes the call pre-flop
- Showdown: Joe - As Qs Vs Opp - 5c 5d
Flop: Qh Qd 9s Turn: 2s River: 4s
Joe wins pot of 240,000 with Trip Q's or Nut Flush, take your pick!

Negreanu Is Back
- Negreanu raises to 10,000
- Player on the button makes the call
Flop: Qd Qc 9
- Negreanu checks
- Button bets 12,000
- Negreanu makes the call
Turn: 7
- Negreanu goes all-in for 23,000
- Button calls.
- River: rag
- Showdown: Negreanu - Qh 9h Vs Opp - 9s 9d
Both players flopped the boat, but Negreanu wins pot of 95,000 with the Queens.

Hoyt Departs WSOP
Hoyt Corkins has been eliminated from the maine event and will be taking away $34,636 in cash. Not bad, but its just a little shy the $12 million paycheck for first place.

Current Standings:
1 Kyle Bowker - 1,140,000
2 William Thorsson - 950,000
3 Matt Wilson - 913,000

WSOP Updates - Day 4

Day 4 will commence in a few hours (noon) with only 481 players. Tournament directors expected a field of around 600 to be narrowed down to 300, a target that will be reached a lot faster today.

The payout schedule is already paying just over $26,000 with 481 players to go. There will be 12 places paid this year worth over $1,000,000 including the 2006 champion, who will walk away with $12,000,000 of an amazing $82,000,000 prize pool.

Step out of line please Sir!

Today at the Las Vegas Outlet store Liam and I purchased some toy guns. This is America! So these are plastic guns with orange/red barrel tips (the international symbol for "fake") however they do shoot little plastic pellets and otherwise look quite real. I am sure we can't take these things back home (to Australia), but we thought it would be fun to shoot each other in the hotel room, so we got them anyway.

There is already about 2,000 little plastic pellets on the floor of the room, and Liam has a nice bruise just next to his right eye. He should have been wearing his safety goggles!

Anyway, it's about 6AM here in the Bellagio and for about 5 seconds our "gun game" spilled out into the hotel hallway right before we went out for a late dinner.

Apparently, some poor little guy changing light bulbs in the hall thought Liam had a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, and rightly so, decided to call casino security.

Moments later, Liam and I headed down to Bellagio Cafe for dinner. As we are strangely waiting in line (at a near empty cafe) the Bellagio Security Supervisor arrives and removes Liam from the queue.

Bellagio Security (Politely), "Step out of line please Sir"
Liam, "Did I do something wrong?"
Bellagio Security, "We'll see"
Bellagio Security, "We believe you are carrying a weapon"

By this time, there are 5 suited security guards (the biggest ones they have) and about 10 other "helpers" securing the scene.

Liam quickly told them that the "weapon" was a toy gun he has in his room and not on his person, almost laughing at the situation.

But as serious as this could have been, Bellagio Security with the utmost respect and manner, asked to confirm.

So we were escorted back to the room by the suited gentlemen to see our [toy] weapons.

As we arrive on our floor, there are two more guards securing our room, standing either side of our room door. It looked great, like the president was staying there! Haha.

The security supervisors name was Paul, probably the most polite and well mannered person we have spoken to in this city. He apologized the entire time on the way up to the room for "wasting our time" even before he had confirmed the fake status of said weapons.

Anyway, I just had to post. Firstly, this is one of the coolest things that has happened and secondly as a testament to the outstanding professionalism and manner of the Bellagio Security staff.

The staff could have handled the situation in a totally different way, but to our amazement this was simply the best "service" we have experienced in 10 days.

Only 6 hours until re-launch..

Friday, August 04, 2006

It's 6am here in Las Vegas on Friday morning, play will resume for 1,159 players on Day 3 in about 6 hours time.

WSOP tournament directors estimated 1,400 starters for Day 3, meaning players would only have to outlast less than half the field to get to a paid position (at 873).

With only 1,159 in the Day 3 starting field, the remaining players may be hitting the cashier sooner rather than later.

The Poker.com team are all out, but we will continue coverage of other notable players over the final few days, until someone is crowned 2006 World Series of Poker Champion!

The sun is up already, in the city that never sleeps, I'm going to get a few hours sleep before heading back over to the Rio.

Guess Who's Playing Craps?

Thursday, August 03, 2006

Last night I went for a stroll down the main strip of Las Vegas and decided to check out some of the other casinos.

I visited the Venetian, which has by far the best poker room cocktail waitresses, and after having some quiet drinks with PiggyMcPig there, we headed on down to the Wynn Casino.

The Wynn is a magnificent building with full grown trees and rose gardens growing inside the front entrance. I walked around for a little while and checked out the ferrari display and their poker room and then I saw them...."The Dream Team"

I could hardly believe it, the Dream Team were standing right there and they weren't shooting from downtown, but shooting craps.

Being the fanatical basketball fan that I am, I was completely speechless to see all the guys just hanging out. And if you know me, its not often I'm lost for words.

Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me or the nerve to speak to the guys, they were already being harassed by the ladies, so I just stood there and watched.

I think they might have thought I was a stalker after a while.

Tonight the Dream Team play Puerto Rico in a friendly lead up match to the World Championships... And you can bet I will have my camera tonight!

Cab Causes Carnage at WSOP

Just imagine your sitting at the WSOP on your second day and you've just been dealt your hand in the big blind... The action is slowly making its way round to you and along the way three other players limp into the hand. Finally, the small blind decides to raise the BB x 4 and you think to yourself what could this guy have, is he trying to steal the pot before we even see the flop?

So, as you have done for the last 6 hours, you reach out and ever so cautiously look at the corner of your top card - its an Ace... Then you peel back your second card - its another Ace...

Now, you think to yourself who cares what the small blind has, this is my hand...

You pause for a moment, assessing how much you will fire at the pot... when suddenly you here an announcement, "Will the owner of a white Lexus, license plate number XXXX, please come to the front desk. Your vehicle has been involved in a car accident!"

Well, that's exactly what happened at this years WSOP.

In fact, 4 separate cars all suffered some major damage due to a cab driver who somehow managed to plow into the parked cars.

I have to commend the player who not only managed to play his pocket A's to win a large pot, but was able to do this while dealing with the accident.

Maybe, it was the perfect cover for his hand, but either way it was a great effort to keep one's cool while knowing someone just hit every panel along one side of your new Lexus.

Player RobDoral's Re-cap of Day 1

"I was seated next to Steve Dannemman (my right) and Tony Fagin (an Irish pro ) to my left. There was a third guy who Steve had played wtih before who I think is an experienced amateur. John someone?

I actually had a pretty good run of cards at that table. I had AA and KK twice each, QQ, and caught sets twice. I had to lay down my QQ on a AK flop when I met resistance and my best play of the day might have been laying down my AA to big flop checkraise when the third guy, John, who had been playing conservatively and who I never saw bluff. Fagin commented to me that he thought the third guy had a set of jacks and Fagin had been reading hands very well. Danneman was a great guy and his cheerfulness and joking made me feel a lot more comfortable.

When our table was broken up I had about 15k chips, down a bit from my high of 18.5 k. There were no pros at my second table that I recognized but shortly after I sat down they moved an experienced amateur/pro to my left. He was the red haired balding guy who called a clock on the asian guy on a recent episode of the Pro Poker Tour. I stayed about even with the blinds for a while staying out of the way the best I could from the three players to my left who were by far the most aggressive players.

The critical hand for me was when I called a short stack all in with JJ against a player with 88. The aggressive guy to my immediate left went into the tank for several minutes deciding whether to try and force me off my hand from the BB. I was the SB. He eventually folded and seemed fairly pissed when I turned up my JJ. But the 88s hit a straight by the turn and even hit a set by the river just as another little kick in my nuts by the poker gods. I lost 1/3 of my stack on that hand.

The guy to my immediate left and the red haired guy then raised every single pot I entered after that forcing me to lay down hands before and after the flop. And then for three hours I never saw a hand. I was around 6k to start the card dead run and ended down to 2.5k by the time the blinds went to 150/300 25 ante. During that entire period the two best hands I had were KTs and 44. I missed the flop with the KTs and had to fold and I folded the 44 preflop to a raise and reraise before me (of course a 4 hits the flop but I think I would have been dead to a higher set). I would have been more than happy to push during this time with any ace, and pair, any two broadway cards, even a decent suited connector like 98s. I may have folded ace rag when there was a raise in front of me but I never saw any of those other hands.

I pushed in finally with 44 for my final 2.5 k and the guy to my left immediately calls with AJo. A jack hits the flop and I don't improve. I'm pretty disappointed of course but thanks to poker.com for sending me."

Updates from Day 2 of the WSOP

Wednesday, August 02, 2006

Today's play featured the remaining two players, Mazzawi & Dasdafac, of the Poker.com WSOP team.

dasdafac Busts Out
The final member, Chris Wight, of 3 Check'n'Raise players to attend the WSOP due to Poker.com's gesture, has sadly been eliminated from today's play.

Chris has played extremely well throughout the event and while I know he is greatly disappointed not to survive till day 3, he can return home feeling proud of his performance.

Hand: Last Hand for Level 2
- Chris is short stacked
- Down to 4,200 in chips
- UTG makes minimum raise
- Mid position re-raises
- Chris all-in (and doest use the silly all-in chip)
- UTG folds
- Mid position calls
Showdown: Chris - AK Vs Opponent - QQ
Flop: rainbow of rags Turn: J River: K
- Chris doubles up

Hand: Bullets Get Cracked
- 27mins remaining in level 8
- Blinds 300 / 600 ante 75
- Chris is UTG & has 17,000 in chips
- Raises to 2,200
- Seat 4 re-raises to 7,500
- Table folds
- Chris pushes all-in
- Opponent calls
Showdown: Chris - AA Vs Opp - AK
- Hand odds: AA = 92.8% Vs AK = 5.86% Tie = 1.35%
Board: J Q 7 Rag 10
Opponent rivers a 10 to win with A High Straight.
And just like that Chris and his pocket rockets are out.

Chris' Comments:
"Being here at the WSOP is a complete poker miracle!
I can't thank Poker.com enough for kicking-in and making this trip become a reality, they (Poker.com) have done so much to make this happen.

I'm a little annoyed at that river card, but that's poker for you. At least I have a world of new found knowledge to take away with me. It was an amazing experience to sit with the pro's and watch their decision making process."

Now, its time to win myself a seat to the Aussie Millions with my new found home for online poker... Poker.com."

xxJoker22xx Busts Out
Joker22 started day 2A with 48,350 and by the end of the first session he was sitting comfortably with 75,000 in chips.
This was until Joker's table was broken up and he was moved to a new table with a player who had over 100,000 in chips and was pushing the table around.

So, after joining the table Joker22 decided to tighten up, sit back and only see the flop with premium starting hands.

It wasn't until later that night that Joker found himself with AK and only one other player still in the hand pre-flop. You guessed it, the table bully and chip leader (the only player who had Joker covered).

Hand: AK equals Bust Out
- Joker22 raises
- Chip Bully re-raises another 5000
- Joker22 goes to fold, but puts opponent on Q's
-Joker22 calls
Flop: 3 9 K
- Bully checks
- Joker22 hits K & bets 10,000
- Bully pushes all in.
- Joker22 pauses, then makes the call
Showdown: Joker - AK Vs Bully - AA
- Joker22 draws dead and his opponents bullets win

MsRounders Busts Out
After managing her short stack with the greatest of care for Day 1A, MsRounders decided she would need to make some aggressive plays during the morning session if she wanted to go the distance.

And she did just that, in fact she went all-in on eight separate occasions throughout the day and not once was she called. The only problem being was that she actually had AA or AK each time.

Then the one time that MsRounders pushed without a premium hand, she was called by a player who had is headphones on and who appeared to make the call by mistake.

Hand: Ms Rounders gets an Unlucky Turn
- 3rd hand of level 10
- Blinds: 500 / 1,000 ante: 100
- Table folds
- MsRounders pushes all-in on the button
- BB makes the call
Showdown: MsRounders - A9 Vs BB - KJ
Flop: rainbow of rags Turn: J River: rag
MsRounders busts to a Jack on the turn.

Unfortunately, MsRounders A-High couldn't hold up and was our last player to bust on Day 2A. An amazing effort considering she started the second day with only 9,900 in chips. I think we can all learn a lesson in chip management and believe it or not, table talk.

It was about mid-way through her day 2 session, when a new player joined her table with about 65,000 in chips. After playing at her table for an hour or so, he piped up with "So, are you ever going to play a hand at the WSOP?" To which she just smiled and said "Maybe."

Then 3 hands later the table jokester busted out of the tournament... And just as he began his long walk of shame, MsRounders stated to the table "I guess 65,000 isn't any help then."

WSOP Photo Blog

2002 World Series of Poker winner Robert Varkonyi busted out of flight B of Day 2 earlier this evening. From a top 5 position after his day 1, the former champion has reduced his chip lead to zero.

Daniel Negreanu sits on the feature table after building his stack to a top 15 position on Day 2.

The main event continues into the evening as players attempt to increase their stacks or simply hold on to make Day 3. Starting Day 3 with decent stack means that players must beat less than half the field (around 1400) to get paid. With 873rd spot paying a cool $14,597 most satellite winners will be very happy just making it to the money.

For the pro players among them, 80 hours of poker needs to have a bigger pay off. We've already witnessed some early, aggressive play from some pros on Day 1. If they bust out, you'll find them down the road at a high stakes cash game, winning their buy-in back within hours.

WSOP Day 2 (A+B) Updates

Well, after four very long and tiring days the record ME field finally reached its desired target and the second round of play was able to get underway.

Today's play saw a field of 1,637 entrants take their seats and with many of these players needing to double their chip stacks early in the day, the action was far more aggressive than in previous rounds.

Day 2 (A+B)Overview:
Play has concluded for the evening and Day 2B begins tomorrow at noon, combining the players from days 1C and 1D.

Round 11 - Blinds: 600 / 1,200 Ante: 200

xxJoker22xx Update:
Joker22 started day 2(A+B) as the Poker.com chip leader with 48,350 in chips and wasted no time getting amongst the action.

Day 2 (A+B) highlights:
- After 4hrs play he had +70k in chips
- Won large pot to nearly double up
- Wins an all-in showdown: 99 vs 66
- Has a pair of Aces up his sleeve (tattoo)

MsRounders Update:
MsRounders has been right to the verge of elimination, but thanks to some well time moves and the respect of her table as done an effort to manage her stack for the past 2 days.

Or as she so elegantly put it, "I'm hanging in there as long as I can..."

At last count MsRounders was sitting at around 12,00 in chips, but with the ever increasing blinds and expensive ante, things are only going to get tougher.

Let's hope the old saying 'a chip and chair can ring true."

Bullitpete:
The final member of the Poker.com UK trio, Bullitpete, was eliminated from today's field after he was unable to build on his Day 1 chip stack of 8,100.

Final Hand: No Love From the Board
- Bullitpete is BB (short stack)
- Mid positions limps in
- Button limps in
- Bullitpete comes over the top
- Pushes all-in for 5,170
- 1st limper folds
- Button calls
- Board comes all low cards & rainbow
Showdown: Bullitpete - A4s Vs Opponent - A10os
Bullitpete busts to his callers 10 kicker

Cashflow5:
Sadly, Cashflow5 was the first Poker.com casualty suffered by the team today when he was unable to hit that much needed double up in the morning levels. His starting stack of 7,050 was always going to make lasting the table no easy task, but when he couldn't hit on the board, his WSOP cam to an honorable finish.

CashFlow5 Comments:
"Being one of the short stacks, I went all in on the 1st hand and ended up splitting the pot when my opponent and I bother revealed AK.

A few hands later I went all in with AQ and was called by the chip leader who had KQ. Nothing hit the board and I doubled up to $15,000.

But about half an hour later I limped into a 2-way pot with KJs.
The Flop comes K J 7 and BB bets 2000. I raise to 5000.
He goes all in and I call, but sadly he turns over pocket sevens and I am gone.

I wish I could have gone further today, but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and was glad to meet all the players and represent Poker.com... And with a little luck I hope to do it all over again next year."

PiggyMcPig
PiggyMcPig was one of the three Check'n'Raise" players that Poker.com offered to cover the cost of their WSOP ME seat, after some unfortunate happenings with the site where the original entry was won.

PiggyMcPig started rather well on Day 1B, but after a run of bad cards and some suspect calls by lose players, was eliminated from the main event...

After his exit from the WSOP he decided to try the Venetian Casino MTT with a $60 buy-in.... And I'm proud to say that PiggyMcPig finished in first place. All while wearing the his Poker.com cap.

Congratulations on your terrific result PiggyMcPig and hopefully you can go even further at next year's WSOP with Poker.com.

Poker.com Players on Day 2 (C+D):
Mazzawi - 24,300
dasdafac (Check'n'Raise) - 8,100

More updates tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Wicked Chops Poker

If you're looking for a something from the lighter side of the WSOP, take a look at Wicked Chops Poker. They're a new addition to the blogroll today.

It's maybe not for everyone, but if you have a good sense of humour you'll get a laugh from this site and the way they talk about poker and poker people. They can seem a little harsh in some of the articles, but all done with tongues firmly in cheeks so don't take them too seriously.

Enjoy.

$12million to the winner!

This year's World Series of Poker Champion is going to take home $12million! That's one heck of a pay day...... Of the 8775 or so players, 873 will make the money. The bubble bustout (874th) will probably get a freeroll into next years event like they did last year.

Here's the prize pool breakdown.

1 - $12,000,000
2 - $6,102,499
3 - $4,123,310
4 - $3,628,513
5 - $3,216,182
6 - $2,803,851
7 - $2,391,520
8 - $1,979,189
9 - $1,566,858

10-12 - $1,154,527
13-15 - $907,128
16-18 - $659,730
19-27 - $494,797
28-36 - $329,865
37-45 - $247,399
46-54 - $164,932
55-63 - $123,699
64-72 - $90,713
73-81 - $65,973

82-126 - $51,129
127-189 - $47,006
190-252 - $42,882
253-315 - $38,759
316-378 - $34,636
379-441 - $30,512
442-504 - $26,389
505-567 - $22,266
568-621 - $20,617
622-666 - $19,050
667-720 - $17,730
721-774 - $16,493
775-819 - $15,504
820-873 - $14,597

That also means that Harrahs will pocket about $5.26 million from this event alone due to their 6% juice. Add that to the juice from the other events, the room and F&B revenue and the sponsorship fees and Harrahs would be making an easy 8 figures from the WSOP this year.

If only they treated the participants and the companies that send them players like they were valued customers.... But that's a topic for another blog post.

I had to share this one...

Tuesday, August 01, 2006

This week's crazy person has been emailing me for a few weeks and I tried to help them out with some online poker tips, but they just get stranger and stranger...

"Bots. For those too stupid or busy to cheat in person, there are programs that play for you. Sometimes bots win. But today's computers are better at games like chess, where there's perfect information, than at sorting through the lies, feints, and uncertainties of poker. Besides, security monitors often pick up their scent, especially when they spot one player going 36 hours straight without a bathroom break.and that is just one of the ways i found out so now I know how you crooks do it"

Watch out. Security monitors will pick up your scent if you don't go to the bathroom! Better wear your foil hat whilst you play.

LOL

WSOP UPDATES

xxJOKER22xx
With nearly 50,000 in chips Joker has done more than just survive the first day, but has managed to set himself up nicely for the second round of the ME.

Highlight: Second Last Hand for the Night
With only 2 hands remaining until the end of the day, Joker made a big decision to either double up or go out with a bang.
- Mid position makes minimum raise
- Joker in late position re-raises
- BB re-raises all-in
- Table folds and Joker makes the call
- Showdown: Joker - AQh Vs Opponent - 10 10
Flop: J K 8 Turn: 9
River: 10
And with some luck on the river, his AQ became the nut straight

Let's hope the cards continue to fall favorably for xxJoker22xx

Nick Gibson
Unfortunately, Nick couldn't repeat his earlier WSOP performance of 6th place in the $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha event.

After playing for roughly half the day Nick had double his starting stack and looking quite comfortable at his table. However, this all changed after one particular player decided to throw caution to the win and make some very questionable plays.

It was at this stage that Nick lost half his stack (1,100) to this lose cannon, after his pocket K's were cracked on the river by the monster starting hand - 45os.

Unlucky, Nickster...

FoxyUK
Another regular on the Poker.com site has sadly busted out on his first day in the ME.

However, after Foxy's result in the $5000 Pot-Limit Hold'em, which paid $142,128 for 3rd place, he is still ahead of his UK rivals, bullitpete and Sirlimpsalot.

Dragons
Hand: Doubles with the Ladies
- dragons is dealt QQ
- Dragons raise BB x 2
- BB calls
Flop: rainbow of rags
- BB all-in
- Dragons is short stack and calls
- Turn: Q River: rag
- Dragons set beats pocket K's
MsRounders
Hand: Short Stack Doubles Up
- MsRounders on button & bets 3x BB
- BB calls (she suspects he has low cards)
Flop: 6 7 10 rainbow
- MsRounders bets 3,000
- BB re-raises all-in
- After much thinking and consideration (pot size and remaining stack) call is made
Showdown: BB - 69os Vd MsRounders - KQs
Turn: K River: rag

Hand: Amazing Lay-down
- MsRounders dealt KsKh & bets 4 x BB
- BB calls
Flop: 3 4 9 all clubs
- BB bets 4 x BB
-MsRounders calls
Turn: Jc
- BB moves all-in
- MsRounders lays down K High Flush
- BB shows A High Flush

An outstanding fold, I know I couldn't have made that decision

Octagon
Hand: Tired Call Ends Tourney
- Opponent on the button bets 3 x BB
- Octagon is BB & calls
Flop: 2 5 10 rainbow
- Octagon checks (with check-raise in mind)
- Opponent moves all-in
- Octagon has top pair with Jack kicker
- Makes call
-Showdown: Octagon - J 10 Vs Opp - A 10
- Octagon down to final 3,500

Sadly Octagon's tournament comes to an end shortly after when his pocket 3's are cracked by 10's

JoeJoek
- Built chip stack to 17,000 throughout the day
- Very lose player at table

Hand: JoeJoek Can't Dodge Bullets
- Table folds
- JoeJoek raises 2 x BB
- BB calls
Flop: 4 5 J rainbow
- BB checks
- JoeJoek pushes all-in with AJ (top pair & Ace Kicker
- BB calls with pocket A's
Turn & River: rags

Be sure check back on our remaining players to see who is still carrying the flame after Day 2...
