Young gun wins 2006 WPT Legends of Poker Title

Thursday, August 31, 2006

Before his 2006 World Poker Tour (WPT) Legends of Poker Main Event victory, young poker professional Joe Pelton's largest tournament success was a 2005 super-satellite entry into the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event.

The payout for that event was $25,700, a nice chunk of change, but mere pennies compared to the $1.5 million Pelton received for taking home the fourth tournament in the WPT season five schedule.

Although Pelton has cashed in two WSOP events in his young career, his win was unexpected, especially considering he was playing with some of the best players in the world at the 2006 Legends of Poker Main Event Final Table.

Defeating a group of six that contained WPT superstars Hoyt Corkins and Scotty Nguyen, Pelton is no longer flying under the radar. He joins the large group of young players who are making big names for themselves in major WPT events.

Pelton began the day in third chip position with $1,100,000, but drew an unfortunate seat, sandwiched between the two chips leaders, Frankie O'Dell ($3,880,000) and Kevin O'Donnell ($2,345,000).

O'Dell, who came into the final table as the chip leader after cracking Scotty Nguyen's pocket aces on the hand before the final table was set, was almost able to hold onto the chip lead for the entirety of the final table, not giving it away until play was heads-up.

A WSOP bracelet holder (2003 Omaha High-Low Split), O'Dell played well enough to win, removing his greatest threat (O'Donnell) when the two players were first and second in chips. The near double-up allowed O'Dell to enter three-handed play with a 2-1 chip lead over Hoyt Corkins and Pelton.

Not able to play many pots during the final table play, Corkins moved all-in over the top of a Pelton raise and was quickly called by the eventual champion. Corkins showed a pair of threes and Pelton flipped over a J-10 off-suit. Pelton hit a Jack on the flop, bouncing the popular Corkins from the final table.

After doubling through O'Dell, Pelton again found himself facing a significant re-raise when O'Dell moved all over the top with pocket Sixes. Continuing his fearless play, Pelton did not hesitate, calling with his A-7 offsuit. The Ace on the flop improved Pelton and the hand held up, giving the rising star his first major tournament victory.

Here are the final table finishes and payouts:

1.) Joe Pelton - $1,577,170

2.) Frankie O'Dell - $776,385

3.) Hoyt Corkins - $381,540

4.) Kevin O'Donnell - $226,260

5.) Randy Holland - $177,460

6.) Scotty Nguyen - $133,095

The WPT continues to roll on with the next stop coming in Atlantic City, New Jersey for the Borgata Poker Open. The televised $10,000 WPT event will begin on September 15.

WPT hits back

Monday, August 28, 2006

World Poker Tour group's legal counsel filed the company's first response this week in an interesting case brought by leading poker players who claim that the WPT tournament agreements place them at a personal and business disadvantage.

WPT has hired top legal council in Makan Delrahim of the Washington D.C. law firm of Brownstein, Hyatt and Farber, working in conjunction with Gibson Dunn and Crutcher. In his 22 page response Delrahim suggests that any of the players involved in the litigation that are affiliated with, or participate in the business decision making process of an online poker room are putting the WPT at an unfair advantage.

He asserts that by participating in profits reaped by accepting US bettors via their online poker site, these players put the WPT at a competitive disadvantage. This is because the WPT's online poker site, WPT Online.com bars US bettors due to the unclear legal situation surrounding online poker in the United States.

Delrahim additionally claims that, by promoting online poker in the U.S. and accepting U.S. customers, these players are subsidising the poker TV programming these online poker rooms produce, therefore competing with the WPT in its core business of producing poker television programming.

Andy Bloch, Annie Duke, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Phil Gordon, Joseph Hachem, Howard Lederer and Greg Raymer are the seven internationally famous poker players who brought the action against WPT earlier this year, announcing it at a widely publicised press conference.

Their submission is that WPT tournament pre-conditions required them to waive rights to the use of their images and names to promote products and video games. The claim is also made that WPTE colluded with member casinos to prevent players from entering their tournaments unless they forfeited their rights.

Delrahim denies any wrongdoing, saying: "WPTE denies that it has violated the antitrust laws or engaged in any unlawful conduct whatsoever. As will be shown in the course of this litigation, Plaintiffs' complaint mis-states the facts regarding WPTE and its relationships with the casinos that host World Poker Tour events and mis-characterises the state of the poker industry."

WPT's general counsel, Adam Pliska said the company believes that the action is misleading and without merit. The case continues in the United States District Court, Central District.

Daniel Negreanu published a scathing report on this on his blog, clearly unhappy with the approach taken by these players. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Jamie Gold's WSOP winnings frozen

Thursday, August 24, 2006

A Nevada judge has frozen half of the $12 million US top prize after a Gold acquaintance sued, saying the two men agreed to split the winnings. Bruce Crispin Leyser, a Los Angeles-based TV development executive, alleges in a suit filed Monday in Clark County District Court that Gold, a former Hollywood talent agent, agreed in July to split his winnings in exchange for Leyser helping him find celebrities to play in the main event while wearing the label of an offshore Internet gambling site.

The site paid the $10,000 entry fee for Gold, who beat 8,772 players to win the world's largest poker tournament.

Leyser alleges he fulfilled his end of the deal - getting Scooby Doo star Matthew Lillard and Punk'd comedian Dax Shepard to wear the brand - but claimed Gold has refused to hand over $6 million.

Gold said in a statement issued through his lawyers that he was "disappointed" that "a person he has only known since July of this year has elected to file litigation rather than continue the parties' discussions in an effort to find a resolution to this matter."

After winning the tournament, Gold said he would share the money with friends and supporters.

Clark County District Judge Kathy Hardcastle issued a temporary restraining order Monday preventing the Rio hotel-casino, site of the poker tourney, from disbursing $6 million for 15 days. A hearing was set for Sept. 1 to determine whether the freeze would continue.

Leyser said he has evidence to support his claim - an Aug. 10 voicemail left by Gold just hours before play began at the final table.

"I promise you - you can keep this recording on my word - there's no possible way you're not going to get your half ... after taxes," it says, according to the lawsuit. "You've trusted me the whole way, you can trust me a little bit more. I promise you there's no way anybody will go anywhere with your money. It's your money."

Leyser's lawyer in Las Vegas, Richard Schonfeld, called the case "exceptionally strong."

"That's how we were able to obtain a temporary restraining order freezing the money," he said.

This could prove to be costly little agreement for Gold!

Texas Hold 'Em Poker for Xbox 360 free for two days

One for the gamers out there with Xbox 360's, Texas Hold'em Poker is free on Xbox Live Arcade, the only catch is you have to grab it fast.

The game is going to be released at 1 a.m. PDT (GMT-7) on Wednesday, and will continue to be a free download for 48 hours, until 1:01 a.m. PDT on Friday. At that time, it will sell for 800 Microsoft points, or $10. So be sure to give this a download before the end of the week, or you'll miss out on the freebie.

The game is going to come equipped with a "persistent bankroll" that will hopefully keep people betting realistically; once that bankroll is gone, you can only play in smaller buy-in games until you can raise enough cash. Still, expect a lot of wild play as gamers new to poker flood the Xbox Live service. Texas Hold 'em also offers multiplayer support for up to eight gamers, three modes of gameplay (Standard Games, Scenarios, and Tournaments), achievements, extensive online leaderboards and statistics, and high-definition graphics.

While obviously its not the same as sitting down at a Poker.com sit'n'go, its still poker, and how often do you get freebies from Xbox!

World Strip Poker Champion Crowned

Sunday, August 20, 2006

A week after the record 8,773 entrants lined up in the 2006 WSOP Main Event, nearly 200 entrants put their modesty on the line at the inaugural World Strip Poker Championship.

Held in Cafe Royal in central London, the event had 10,000 pounds ($18,844USD) for first place to go along with the title of World Series Strip Poker Champion.

John Young, a 32-year-old freelance writer from Slough, a town just west of London, secured victory after an eight hour competition, beating a truly international field.

Entrants of both sexes from 12 different countries took part in the event which doubled as an official Guinness World Record attempt.

Aside from strict rules governing the poker play, there were clear guidelines on the stripping element -- most importantly that each player started the match by wearing five items of clothing supplied by the organisers.

Each contestant was given a towel to sit on and to cover themselves when naked, but only after they had stripped completely.

GSN Announces 3rd season of High Stakes Poker

Wednesday, August 16, 2006

With anticipation growing weekly for our fix of High Stakes Poker in the office, the announcement of a 3rd season is music to the ears of several Poker.com employees.

Clearly we are not alone, and with the viewer-ship constantly growing during the current second season it was merely a formality to get plans for a 3rd season underway.

The first point of order was to invite the latest World Champion, Jamie Gold to be a part of the next series, after all with his recent win he can surely afford the $100,00 buy-in.

Although there has been no location or additional players yet chosen for the event, the taping of the third season will start in October. GSN also announced that, at the conclusion of the second season of "High Stakes Poker", there will be an encore broadcast of the first season that will begin on September 18th at 8PM (Eastern Time).

For now if you haven't seen any of the High Stakes Poker action look it up, it's definately my must see TV of week

Jamie Gold WSOP Backstory

Monday, August 14, 2006

We're not sure if this is true, but it's interesting nonetheless. There's a story on Hollywood Interrupted about Jamie Gold and the promises he made to people before the World Series.

Apparently he's only going to be able to keep a fraction of the $12million he won if he keeps his word and pays his debts.

The fact he owes money to people is not that much of a scandal, as there's plenty of players that would have deals in place if they cash.

But if he doesn't pay up.... That would be news, and a sad day for poker players everywhere.

I wish schools taught kids more math

Sunday, August 13, 2006

I am just posting this here so our standard response to anyone questioning the Poker.com RNG can be to give them a link to this page. Then they can learn for themselves how ridiculous some of their theories and statements are.

Read about Random Number Generators.

Read about Randomness Theory.

Read about Statistics.

Read about Probability.

This is who tests our RNG.

This is where Poker.com has a gaming license.

This is a site where you can ask real people about the legitimacy of online gaming companies
.

This is where you can talk to other Poker.com players about your experiences and hopefully find out that we're actually very nice people that try to be fair in everything we do.

Sorry for having to make this post, but I'm at my wits with regard to the best way to deal with players that think online poker is rigged. Sometimes their stupidity and paranoia is simply amazing. It must be horrible to live in fear of others ripping you off, and to not realise salvation is just a few paragraphs of reading away....

WSOP 2006 Recap

It's finally over. The World Series of Poker has finished for another year and we saw a few very memorable things happen.
  • Phil Hellmuth claimed his 10th bracelet to join Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson as the all time leaders. He almost claimed his 11th in the final event, finishing 3rd which was enough to see him finish the 2006 WSOP as the overall points leader, with the most final table appearances.
  • Joe Hachem proved he was not just a one tournament wonder, making it to 2 final tables, winning $347,282 and finishing 5th in the overall points race. Who knows what would have happened if his AA wasn't cracked in the main event...
  • Jeff Madsen emerged as a new young poker star, winning two bracelets, making 4 final tables and taking home $1.5 million, all at just 21 years of age.
  • Jamie Gold proved that you can keep the chip lead for a long time in the main event, fighting off all challengers and busting an incredible 7/8 players on the final table to win the biggest ever prize in poker history.
  • Chip Reese, often regarded as the world's best all around poker player, proved he could be just that by winning the $50,000 buy in H.O.R.S.E. event.
  • Harrahs drew a ridiculous line in the sand by banning all '.com' advertising at the WSOP, but allowed online gaming companies to advertise using '.net' domains.
  • Poker.com bailed out the Check'n'Raise poker players that had their WSOP dreams shattered.
  • 3 players who play at Poker.com made final tables, and one won a bracelet. Together they cashed for over $600,000.
It was our first World Series of poker, and we look forward to sending our players to many more. It was great to meet the players that qualified through Poker.com. We'll be adding you all to a new 'Hall of Fame' section on the site very soon.

This month, there are Borgata Poker Open WPT seats up for grabs. The first one is being given away in a $250 buy-in tournament at 15:15 today. All new depositors can get into a free tournament giving away a $12,500 package by using coupon code WPTFREEROLL.

Best of luck to everyone playing today.

From wire to wire: victory for Jamie Gold

Friday, August 11, 2006

It never seemed in doubt and a dominating final hand proved it.

Continuing the trend of talking heavily during opponents decisions, on a flop of Q-8-5 Gold talked Paul Wasicka into calling his all in bet, and when the cards were flipped you felt it was over. Wasicka's pocket 10's were behind the pair of Queens of Gold, and the way Gold drew out all day it just didnt seem possible he could lose from there.

With only a few outs an ace on the turn took all hope from Wasicka and a 4 on the river sealed it.

Wisicka takes home $6,102,499 for his fine efforts.

Gold has had an amazing run, leading the field for the last 3 days of play. He brought a massive chip stack to the final table and any time he dropped a few chips he soon made them up.

Congratulations to Jamie Gold, the 2006 World Champion from the World Series of Poker.

Binger goes out

With a flop of 6-10-5 Jamie Gold moves all in with 4-3, Paul Wasicka goes into the tank but folds and action comes around to Michael Binger who quickly calls with A-10.

Amazingly Gold catches his 7 on the turn and Binger is on his way home with $4,123,310.

It was a great run For Binger who was short stacked all day, notably crippled hard after doubling up early on, but he fought back and hung in there and has made quite a nice payday for himself.

As we go to heads up the chip count is as follows:

1 Jamie Gold 64,000,000 Up $7,000,000
2 Paul Wasicka 11,000,000 Down $-10,500,000

And then there was 3

Allen Cunningham pushed all in with pocket 10's and was quickly called by Jamie Gold with K-J.

Gold, who has missed only one coin flip today, spiked a king on the flop, and with no help on the board Cunningham was done.

Thought of as the biggest challenge to Gold's huge stack goes home with $3,628,513.

I've mentioned it a few timed today and it continues to be a surprise, as Michael Binger continues to slide up the payouts and is now guaranteed at least $4 million.

The chip count now stands as follows:

1 Jamie Gold 48,675,000 Up $1,175,000
2 Paul Wasicka 17,000,000 Down $-2,000,000
3 Michael Binger 14,800,000 Down $-600,000

Chip count at the break

The players have gone to break, and the fold to any bet policy has continued.

There was one very interesting hand when Gold re-raised Cunningham with the board showing J463. Cunningham went deep into the tank with lots of chatter between the two players, Gold was either trying to bait Cunningham to call or to fold, it wasnt exactly clear, what was clear was that Cunningham definatly had a piece of the board, but in the end not a big enough piece, and he folded.

At the break the chip count is as follows:

1 Jamie Gold 47,500,000 Down $-3,500,000
2 Paul Wasicka 19,000,000 Up $7,000,000
3 Michael Binger 15,400,000 Up $2,100,000
4 Allen Cunningham 7,600,000 Up $100,000

Chip Count Update

Its become all about survival at the 2006 WSOP, with 2nd-4th all with similar chip stacks, and leader Gold way out in front the table has really tighened up. Any bet from Gold brings a quick fold from the other players.

1 Jamie Gold 51,000,000 Up $2,500,000
2 Michael Binger 13,300,000 Up $500,000
3 Allen Cunningham 13,000,000 Down $-300,000

Short stack comes up short

Cunningham raised, Gold called from the small blind, and then Butler moved all in from the big blind. Both players called the short-stack and the flop was J 6 5 – both checked.

Turn was a deuce and when Gold bet heavily Cunningham got out of the way.

Gold showed KJ for top pair and Butler rolled over pocket 4s and he was drawing slim.

River was a Ten and Butler was sent home in 5th with $3,216,182

Michael Binger continues his big move and is serious looming as the 2006 version of Aussie Joe Hachem. Last to first is going to be tough against Jamie Gold's huge stack, but a few hours ago we thought Binger was on his way home.....

Binger Doubles Through Wasicka

Binger moved all in and was loosly called by Wasicka. As the cards were flipped Binger was quick to his feet when he saw he was ahead with his pocket kings dominating Wasickas K-Q.

Wasicka got a little hope with a Queen on the flop, but with no further help the pot went to Bingers big pocket pair.

2 Paul Wasicka 21,000,000 Up $10,000,000

Gold finally takes a beat

After a flop of K-Q-2 Jamie Gold check-raised Paul Wasicka giving Wasicka a big decision to make, apparently it was an easy decision to make as Wasicka quickly pushed all in and Gold called.

When the cards were turned over Gold was once again jumping from his seat cheering but the turn card put him back in his seat, when Wasicka caught his 10.

A blank 8 on the river sealed the deal and Wasicka moved into a very strong position.

Butler doubles up

Three times in a row, Three times in a row was the chant from Rhet Butler as Paul Wasicka called his all in bet, and all his chanting paid off.

Butler was always in good shape with A-10 vs Wasicka's pocket 8's, a Q-K-10 flop put him in front, and k-3 on the turn and river sealed the deal.

Play about to start

Well after watching ESPN's recap of Raymer's and Hachem's wins in 2004 and 2005 respectivly Im absolutly pumped for the rap up of this years title.

Watching Kanter blow that massive lead in 2005 shows you anything can happen, Hachem himself came from last in chips.

Could one of the short stacks, Rhet Butler or Michael Binger, already proving to be rather lucky, storm all the way to the top.

Hopefully we will see some furious action after this break.

Richard Lee falls hard!

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Whenever the two chip leaders tangle feathers fly, and the last hand was no exception.

Jamie Gold re-raised a Richard Lee raise and Lee decided to make a move and pushed all in, Jamie Gold once again yelped and jumped out of his chair as Lee showed pocket Jacks dominated by Gold's pocket Queens.

With no help form the board Lee quickly fell from 2nd in chips to out of the tournament, taking home $2,803,851 for his troubles.

Once again though its the short stacks that are smiling, while Gold streaks out in front the short stacks just keep sneaking up the payouts, with the last two bust outs coming from 2nd and 5th in chips.

Binger Doubles Through Cunningham

Alan Cunninham recklessly pushed all in with pocket dueces and was called by Michael Binger with A-6.

A monster flop of 4-A-6 came down putting Binger well in front, and while a 5 on the turn gave Cunningham a couple more outs, a king came down on the river and Binger was safe.

That hand moved Binger up into 5th in chips and dropped Cunningham to 4th.

Big Chop

Richard Lee raises, Binger re-raises and pushes all in, the action comes around to Jamie Gold who re-raised again. Lee folds and Binger and gold go heads up.

Both players looked impressed with their hands, and rightfully so, both players had pocket Kings.

The only hope was a four flop flush, and with two hearts on the flop Binger had a feint hope, but a club on the turn killed the hand and the pot was chopped.

On a side not the river card was an ace, and Richard Lee actually folded AQ. Lucky for Binger that Gold re-raised so heavily and pushed Lee out of the hand.

Binger Doubles Down

And just like that Binger is the short stack again.

He pushed all in again, this time with A-9 and Paul Wasicka made the call with A-J.

AA8 on the flop gave Binger few outs, and 5-T on the turn and river meant Wasicka's Jack kicker played and Binger was back to the bottom of the leader board.

Michael Binger Doubles Up

Binger moved all in with A-10 on a QJ8 flop, Cunningham made the call with A-Q and looked in great shape.

A King on the turn crushed Cunningham who didnt even wait for the river to start counting out his chips to pay off Binger.

Erik Friberg Eliminated!

Erik Friberg has been eliminated in 8th place after dicing with chip leader Jamie Gold.

Friberg went all in pre-flop with pocket jacks, everyone folded around to Gold who quickly called. Gold lept with a yelled when the cards where flipped and he was clearly ahead with his pocket Queens.

The flop and turn were all low cards helping no one, and with Gold calling out "no paint no paint" the dealer flips over the river, and it is paint, but its a Queen making Golds trips and eliminating Friberg.

Gold's heart must've been in is mouth when he caught sight of that paint!!!

Final Table Begins

Its been a marathon performance by the players at the final table and after today we will have the 2006 World Champion crowned.

Play commenced earlier with the blinds set at $80,000 / $160,000 and with an ante of $20,000. Enough to make any pot worth taking down.

Jamie Gold was straight into the action and continued to build his healthy chip stack as he won the first pot of the day.

Hand: First Hand of the Day
- Doug Kim raises to $480,000 in late position
- Jamie has Doug covered 6:1
- Jamie Gold re-raises to $1,480,000
- Doug Kim folds

Shortly after, Dan Nassif, was the first player to be eliminated from the final table, but will be taking home $1,566,858 for 9th place.

The knockout hand came courtesy of Jamie Gold and his set of quacking 2's

Hand: Quack, Quack!
- Jamie Gold in early position calls
- Dan Nassif is on the button
- He raises to $700k
- Gold calls & checks in the dark
Flop: 5s 3s 2c
- Nassif moves all-in
- Gold calls
Showdown: Gold 2h2s Vs AcKd
Turn: Ah River: 10s

Gold wins with a set of 2's and Nassif departs the final table with over $1.5 million dollars in his pocket. Does this mean an early retirement for our 33-year-old account executive?

Currently play is still in the first level for the final day, at 32, and here is how the chip stacks are shaping up:

Jamie Gold $31,600,000

Allen Cunningham $16,800,000

Richard Lee $10,000,000

Erik Friberg $9,000,000

Doug Kim $6,600,000

Paul Wasicka $6,500,000

Rhett Butler $4,400,000

Michael Binger $3,000,000

We might be seeing some more all-in action very soon, as the short stacked players start to feel the bite of the ever increasing antes.

Final Table Players

Wednesday, August 09, 2006

Here are the profiles of the players that will be playing at the final table of the WSOP main event. I was cheering for Jamie 'Ari' Gold before, but I also have a soft spot for the only recognised pro at the table - Allen Cunningham. It'd be good for the pros to get some pride back by having one of their own take down the big one for a change.

Richard LeeSEAT 1: Richard Lee
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
Chip Count: 11,820,000

Richard Lee a 55-year-old investor from San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. This is the second straight year that Richard has played at the World Series of Poker. This is his first time to cash and first time ever to make it to a final table. Prior to this, Richard’s best poker finish was 12th place at last year’s Grand Slam of Poker held in Los Angeles. Richard is married and has three grown children. When asked what he wants the rest of the world to know about him, Richard said, “I love my family, my country, and San Antonio!” He arrives third today in the chip count.

Erik FribergSEAT 2: Erik Friberg
Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden
Chip Count: 9,605,000

Erik Friberg is a 23-year-old professional online poker player from Stockholm, Sweden. He represents a growing legion of Scandinavian poker superstars who have come to the WSOP and won prize money. In fact, Sweden now ranks as the most successful country in terms of number of players compared to in-the-money finishers. Erik plays mostly on the Internet and won the Swedish Poker Challenge in 2005. His poker nickname, “Lilar” means, appropriately enough, “gambler.” Prior to taking up poker for a living, he was a college student. Erik is already guaranteed at least a million-and-a-half dollars in what is his first year to play at the World Series. He arrives fourth today in the chip count.

Paul WasickcaSEAT 3: Paul Wasickca
Hometown: Westminster, Colorado
Chip Count: 7,970,000

Paul Wasickca is a 25-year-old poker player who used to work as a bartender and restaurant manager. He was born in Dallas, Texas -- and now lives in Westminster, Colorado. Paul started playing poker about two years ago and has already cashed six times at major poker tournaments, including 14th place in a previous No-Limit Hold’em event held at this year’s World Series. His poker nickname is “Kwick Fish.” When asked what he wants the rest of the world to know about him, Paul said, “I have the best friends and family anyone could ask for.” He arrives fifth today in the chip count.

Dan NassifSEAT 4: Dan Nassif
Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri
Chip Count: 2,600,000

Dan Nassif is a 33-year-old account executive from St. Louis, Missouri. Dan took his vacation time away from work to enter and play in this year’s World Series. That certainly turned out to be a terrific decision. Not too many vacations pay the kind of money Dan is sure to make over this two-week period. Nassif has played fabulous poker in this championship event, although he has frequently been one of the shorter stacks at his table. He arrives with the biggest test of anyone today – ninth place in the chip count.

Allen CunninghamSEAT 5: Allen Cunningham
Hometown: Las Vegas, Nevada
Chip Count: 17,770,000

Allen Cunningham is a 29-year-old professional poker player from Las Vegas, Nevada. He is easily the most accomplished poker player of today’s final nine. Allen has won four WSOP gold bracelets – for Seven-Card Stud in 2001, Deuce-to-Seven Lowball in 2002, No-Limit Hold’em in 2005, and another No-Limit Hold’em championship in 2006. Allen burst onto the poker scene back in 1998 as one of the young guns – along with Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Layne Flack, John Juanda, and others – who have collectively revolutionized the game of poker with their talent and ambition. A victory today would seal Cunningham’s place as perhaps the greatest player in the game today. He arrives second in the chip count.

Michael BingerSEAT 6: Michael Binger
Hometown: Atherton, California
Chip Count: 3,140,000

Michael Binger is a 29-year-old part-time poker pro originally from Delray Beach, Florida, who also has career ambitions as a theoretical physicist. He now lives in Atherton, California. Just two months ago, he earned his PhD in physics from Stanford University. This is the second year that Michael has played at the World Series. He made the final table of the $1500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em event – finishing sixth and earning $100,000. Michael has a major challenge ahead of him today, as he arrives eighth in the chip count.

Doug KimSEAT 7: Douglas Kim
Hometown: Martsdale, New York
Chip Count: 6,770,000

Doug Kim is a 22-year-old financial consultant from Martsdale, New York. He was born in Yonkers, New York. Doug recently graduated from Duke University with a degree in economics. He also enjoys video games when he is not playing poker. Doug primarily plays online poker. This is his first time ever to cash -- not just at the World Series -- but in a poker tournament. Doug arrives today sixth in the chip count.

Jamie GoldSEAT 8: Jamie Gold
Hometown: Malibu, California
Chip Count: 25,650,000

Jamie Gold is a 36-year-old television producer from Malibu, California. He was born in New York City. Prior to running his own studio, Gold was a Hollywood agent with an impressive stable of talented actors -- including “The Sopranos” star James Gandolfini and “Desperate Housewives” co-star Felicity Huffman. Gold has also represented and credits much of his poker success to mentor Johnny Chan. This is Jamie’s 15th time to cash in a major poker tournament, and his first time ever to make it to a WSOP final table. He has been the most dominant player in the championship event over the past four days – and has been the chip leader since Day Three. Gold is ded
