Empty world record attempt awaits verification.

Thursday, December 21, 2006

There are 24 players awaiting official verification of their quest for a place in the Guinness World Records for the longest uninterrupted poker game, but what sort of record is it really?

For the attempt each player anted 20 pounds, and the first hand was dealt at 2100 GMT. Participants promised that half of the money would go to charity and the other half to the winner. The game ended Sunday afternoon after 43 hours and 30 minutes, with breaks only to go to the toilet and to get something to eat. The prior Guinness record had been 42 hours.

Anecdotal evidence would say that the players 43 hours and 30 minutes spent at the Basement Jacks club in Greenwich, southeast London was somewhat of a waste of time, because while the folks at Guinness may approve their record attempt, the poker community knows better.

The big games regularly go 2 days, there are plenty of stories of games going longer than this attempt, the players in the big games just don't really care much for records. Lets face it between their poker, and their crazy prop bets who cares about Guinness World Records?

Two independent moderators reportedly monitored this game, according to the BBC, with the final outcome to be verified by arbiters at Guinness World Records. The big question is have the folks at Guinness heard of the the big game at the Bellagio???

Aussie Joe warms up for his home event with a WPT title.

Wednesday, December 20, 2006

With the Aussie Millions just around the corner in 2005 WSOP Champion Joe Hachem's home town of Melbourne Australia, Joe has show some great form to with the WPT Five Diamond Classic at the Bellagio.

With multiple appearances at major final tables since his breakthrough WSOP win, Joe has proven to be anything but a fluke.

He took only 4 hours to clean up at the WPT Bellagio Five Diamond Classic Championship final table, taking out Daniel Negreanu along the way, picking up a cool $2.1 million and a seat in the $25,000 WPT Championship this spring for his troubles.

Knowing how keen he his to take down his home championship, this could prove to be a telling form guide for how things go when the Aussie Millions rolls around in January.

High Stakes Poker - the third season.

Wednesday, December 13, 2006

Its not personal. Its just poker. The new flyer says it all really. And Im loving the desert grave thing they've done very gangster.

Enough about the ads though, we finally have some news on the next season.

Hitting screens January 15 the next installment has been filmed at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Gabe Kaplan and AJ Benza are back to call the action, and to mix things up a little this time around Kaplan will take a seat at the table on a couple of episodes and one of the players will switch places take over the analyst role on the broadcast. After watching carefully the last couple of seasons I guess he thinks he has scouted the game long enough, its time to get some action!

Joining Kaplan as fresh blood are 2006 WSOP Champion Jamie Gold, his runner-up Paul Wasicka, Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Patrick Antonius, David Benyamine, John D'Agostino, Victor Ramdin, David Williams, Bill Chen, Dan Harmetz, Dan Shak, Illya Trincher and Brian Townsend.

The familiar faces returning from the first two seasons are:

Daniel Alaei, Brad Booth, Doyle Brunson, Todd Brunson, Eli Elezra, Antonio Esfandiari, Sam Farha, Barry Greenstein, Jennifer Harman, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak, Erick Lindgren, Mike "The Mouth" Matusow, Daniel "Kid Poker" Negreanu and Shawn Sheikhan.

Forget Christmas, all I want is for this to go to air!

From Star Wars to Poker Star

Wednesday, December 06, 2006

Hayden Christensen, best known for turning to the dark side as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel is about to play another character that turned to a darker side, Phil Helmuth.

While Phil may be my favorite pro, I had to laugh when I thought about the similarities in the two characters. Anakin went from a nice clean cut little kid, and became someone who only wears black and no one understood, which pretty much sums up Phil.

The poker biopic titled "The Madison Kid" is scheduled to begin filming April or May in Winnipeg, Canada and and was penned by Bob Soderstrom, a friend of Phil. Christensen's commitment was confirmed earlier this week.

In 1989, the 24-year-old Phil became the youngest World Champion of Poker by defeating the two-time defending champion, Johnny Chan, in the World Series of Poker main event. Phil attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for three years before dropping out to play poker full time much to the chagrin of his father, a professor at the school.

Of course we all know how that's turned out, with Phil now holding a record 10 WSOP bracelets.

The brat is strong in this one........
