PokerStars Darfur Charity Tournament

Saturday, May 26, 2007

This Sunday, PokerStars is hosting a charity tournament in association with Not On Our Watch, a charity organisation endorsed by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon & Don Cheadle.

NOOW is trying to focus global attention and resources to stop and prevent mass atrocities. At the moment their aim is to raise money to help the people of Dafur - a region of far western Sudan.

Anyone that can afford to play online poker can afford a few dollars to help these people with clean water and basic health care supplies.

You can help by either donating money via a transfer from your PokerStars account - just transfer money to 'NOOW' using the transfer option within the PokerStars Software. PokerStars is matching all donations from players.

Or you can play in the special Darfur Tournaments. The next one is tomorrow.

Date: May 27th 2007, 15:30 ET
Buy-in: $10 plus rebuys.
Prizes: Top 4 receive tickets to June 5th Oceans 13 premiere in Los Angeles plus 2 night’s hotel and $2k for travel/spending. Top 18 receive autographed copy of “Oceans 13” DVD.

The total prize pool from these tournaments will go to the charity and PokerStars will match these donations too. So for everyone that plays $20 will be going to Darfur.

To find the tournaments, go to the PokerStars lobby, click Tourney and then Special. It's not often you get the chance to play some poker, maybe win a cool prize and help out people less fortunate than ourselves. If you have the time - get along and play.

David Williams Reality

Friday, May 25, 2007

David Williams has got a reality video blog online these days and it seems like he's struggling to find things to film....

Today's thrilling episode involved him driving in his car, complaining about traffic, looking at topless pics on his phone, then complaining to Mike the Mouth about not getting on TV....

Not only is it dangerous and illegal in most parts of the world to talk and look at your phone while driving (in traffic even) - BUT IT"S BORING!

Watch below if you really have nothing better to do...

Ban Carrots!

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Check out the video below from America's Family Research Council. As a rule I pretty much like to stay out of the whole US Online Gambling debate, and I believe in the right to free speech. But surely nobody could take such a video seriously... Or make it with a straight face!

They are trying to act enlightened and helpful. But the educated and clear minded will see through that and realise what they are doing is purest form of evil. Brainwashing innocent people that know no better - for their own personal gain.

Here's a few thoughts about that video.
  • Notice how the actual crime the son committed isn't mentioned. Why not? If online gambling is so bad and it MADE this kid commit a crime, surely it is worth mentioning what he was actually driven to do?

It's not mentioned because they realize how ridiculous they will sound if they try to insinuate that the need to play another S&G made this kid rob a bank. The problem is not online gambling, it's your parenting skills and lack of communication with your child. You must be a great Dad if your boy would rather face jail time than come to you with his problems.... And you are acting as a role model for families? Why would any sane parent listen to what you think is best for their family? You obviously don't communicate well with your child - he probably made up the whole online gambling story anyway....

  • I'll be the first to admit that gambling can be addictive to a small percentage of the population. To most of us it is simply a form of recreation - innocent entertainment. But some can form addictive gambling behaviors, just like coffee, alcohol, sex, exercise and carrots can be addictive. Yes I said carrots - I knew a lady that carried around a bag of carrots to eat. She took them everywhere, until she turned orange and was finally admitted to hospital with carotene poisoning. Does that make bugs bunny evil? Should we ban farmers from growing carrots, or stop the world from exercising and having sex?

No - what we should do is focus resources on educating families about how to identify addictive behaviors and help those affected. Banning something does nothing to help those who have a tendency to become addicted. Their compulsive behaviour will simply shift to another area of their life unless they learn effective self control strategies. Sweeping something under the carpet is no way to deal with a problem. A family organisation should know better.

  • Why is it that a site like PokerStars has a page like this if they are so evil? It explains numerous ways to not only gamble responsibly, but how to block minor's access to such sites, how to block yourself from the site and many ways that you can get more information and help with gambling issues. There's also default deposit limits in place to stop people from gambling too much, too often.

But then you look at the New York horse racing site - http://www.nyra.com. Betting on horse races online is perfectly fine according to the FRC and most politicians. I wonder why it is okay and other forms of online gambling are not? And I wonder why they have virtually no information on their website regarding responsible gambling? They have a tiny notice in grey text at the bottom of the page with a telephone number people can call for help. No information to help people privately learn more about responsible gambling. No links to third party sites that offer help. And I'm pretty sure you could walk into any horse track and bet a LOT of money on as many races as you like without being stopped. The same as you can buy as many lottery or scratch tickets as you like, or walk into any of the 100s of casinos across the USA and lose every cent to your name. None of those things require any skill. Horse racing is widely regarded as the most rigged industry in the world! But it is okay to place a bet over the internet on any old pony running past a post first.

But online poker, where skill is involved, where you are playing against other consenting adults, where deposits are limited, where help is offered and responsible gambling practices are clearly explained is somehow destroying families? Give me a break..
What clowns like the FRC and Mr Hogan need to do is not try and take advantage of innocent people who do not understand the real issues. They need to focus on actually helping and educating families using truth and logic. They are taking advantage of the people they are supposed to help.

Their agenda is clearly not to stop online gambling, but to help politicians secure votes. To help establish support for Bush and the republicans. To brainwash people into thinking online gambling is evil. To protect the revenue streams of industries like horse racing that pump millions of dollars in campaign funds into poltician's & lobbyists' pockets.

And it's so funny how the text within the submission form on their website cannot be altered and you have the option of choosing the salutation Pastor, Reverend, The Rev, Sister, Chaplain or 'the Honourable'. Sorry but no person who submits that form is Honourable. And as usual it's the religious participating in brainwashing.... But that's a debate for another time.

Just remember from this post that online gambling is no more evil or harmful than a humble carrot. At least not to anyone with any common sense!

What has happened to the land of the free?

Phil Gordon leads WSOP circuit event

Monday, May 21, 2007

Harrah's New Orleans is currently playing host to the 'Bayou Poker Challenge' WSOP circuit event, which is the final stop of the World Series of Poker circuit season.

With over half a million dollars at stake for first place, poker pro and celebrity Phil Gordon appears well on his way to acheiving his biggest cash ever in tournament poker. The top prize will pay the winner $516,801. A total of 36 players will make the money and split a prize pool totalling $1,667,100.

The popular author and television personality is the chip leader at the end of the first day and with two days still to play, enjoys a sizable chip lead over his closest rivals.

Phil appeared at the final table of the World Series of Poker main event in 2001, and is one of the original Full Tilt Poker Pros, however these days he is perhaps better-known for his contributions as a writer, teacher, and television analyst.

Gordon penned "The Little Blue Book," a best-seller and primer on poker as a sequel to "Phil Gordon's Little Green Book". He has also appeared in several instructional poker videos and was the host of the "Celebrity Poker Showdown" during its first two seasons.

Aside from poker and writing, Gordon is even more committed to his tireless charity work. He co-founded "Put a Bad Beat on Cancer," which raises money and public awareness for cancer research.

Best of luck Phil, it'll be tough to take your day 1 chip lead all the way to the final table.

So now we have a forum....

Monday, May 14, 2007

We've opened up the Poker.com Forum for business!

As you can see if you click through, it is pretty damn empty. With the thousands of daily visitors the site gets, hopefully it won't take too long to get some interesting conversation happening.

I used to frequent a few forums. One about poker, a few sports forums... But every one seemed to eventually fill up with nutters posting nonsense and arguing with each other... Or maybe I just grew up a little and out-grew the audience?

Anyway we're looking forward to talking with our visitors and answering any questions on the forum, and hopefully it attracts a good bunch of people who are fun to hang out with.

To give the forum a kick-start, the first 250 people to register and make a decent post will be eligible to play in our first forum freeroll. (details soon)

Enjoy your Monday!

I BET YOU!

Wednesday, May 09, 2007

I Bet YouI just watched the first episode of Phil Laak and Antonio Esfarandi's new cable show, I Bet You online at MOJO.

Surprisingly it was pretty damn funny!

The premise of the show is that they make stupid bets against each other for $500-$1000 a pop. Some examples in this episode were how much a shirt costs, who can get the closest blood alcohol to 0.08 and whether Phil could buy a 'bling bling' chain for $20 or less off a person on the street.

Their real life chemistry really shows on TV and they end up being quite entertaining to watch.

My prediction is that get mugged for the bankrolls they carry around before the end of season one....

You can watch the first episode for free online at MojoHD.com.
