Norwegian Championship in UK?

Monday, March 31, 2008

Norwegian Champs in UKAt first I thought this was some sort of lame April fools joke. But it appears to be serious...

The Norwegian Poker Championship is going to be played in the United Kingdom this year, at the Dusk till Dawn club in Nottingham.

There will be plane loads of Norwegians ferried to England to play the event.

This is all necessary because of Norway's policy of banning anything to do with poker. All the Norwegians I've ever met have been some of the most carefree and liberal people I've ever come across. They love to have fun!

It's weird that their government is so anti-poker, but c'est la vie. It's good to see that the organisers of the championship aren't letting a trivial government get in the way of hosting a good poker tournament.

And did anyone watch the recommended viewing from the last post? Here's another TV tip for you - Bodog's Calvin Ayre is on MTV cribs on March 25 at 8pm. His Costa Rica 'compound' should be worth checking out as it take up twice as much time on the show as a normal slot, so there must be some good stuff to see...

Good online poker news in Sweden

Thursday, March 20, 2008

The Swedish Chef loves poker! Before you get too excited, no the Swedish Chef isn't making a comeback to prime time... That WOULD be exciting!

But it looks like the Swedes have decided to ease up on online poker, which is good news.

For some time the sneaky Swedish government has been trying to capitalise on poker's popularity by enforcing a monopoly on online poker, making only their own site 'Svenka Spel' legal for Swedes to play at.

It had been going well for them too, with the site cracking the world's ten biggest online poker sites for a while there.

Prosecutors in the Sweden have been told to stop prosecuting cases against media outlets that are publishing or airing ads related to online poker and gambling from foreign sources.

The challenge to the state monopoly actually came from newspapers who were prosecuted for publishing ads for other poker sites. They claimed in an appeal that it was against EU law to prevent other European nations from free trade in Sweden, including online gambling - and they won.

Hopefully now the Swedes will be able to accept ads from other European companies and enjoy more freedom of choice as to where they play their poker.

Before I sign off to enjoy an easter break, here's two poker & comedy related entertainment offerings you may want to check out.

First up, the Black Poker Stars Invitational on BET. This may not be your particular flava of entertainment, but the trailer looks pretty funny. David Williams, from Bodog is there, along with Eddie Murphy and some other peeps from the entertianment industry - check out the teaser video here. (be warned, there's some colorful language)

Secondly, The Grand launches this weekend. It's a poker movie that may actually be good. It's a comedy which makes it harder to mess up, and has some funny, funny people starring in it. It should be worth it for David Cross alone - that guy cracks me up. Poker legends Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth are featured as well, so check it out if you're up for a movie this weekend.

And don't forget the $1000 freeroll at Carbon Poker on Sunday. All you have to do to play is sign up from one of our links and play for real money on the site, then you should be able to register.

We created a monster!

Wednesday, March 05, 2008

It's great to see all of the big rooms now offering their own short tournament series to liven up everyday online poker. Back in 2005, whilst working at what is now Carbon Poker, we came up with the idea to run a series of more prestigious tournaments over two weeks, run a leaderboard, theme the events and award bigger than usual guarantees.

We had all the different poker games featured, regional championships, the ladies championship, a veterans tourney - all kinds of fun stuff. And it was one of the most successful and enjoyable promotions we ever ran. Everybody loved it.

And it didn't take long to catch on. Full Tilt now runs their 'FTOPS' regularly, Bodog is this week running their first 'Bodog Poker Open' and other rooms have rolled out various similar events, all using the same model. Carbon of course still runs their championships with great success, usually around WSOP time, which is creeping up on us quickly.

Speaking of Carbon Poker, we have finally organised our freeroll tournaments, with the first to take place on Sunday March 23 at 15:00. It will pay out $1000! If you have signed up to Carbon Poker by clicking a link from here at Poker.com, and deposited to play for real money - you will be able to play in the free tournament.

We're also inviting all long term Poker Forum members to play, seeing as a lot of them already had Carbon Poker accounts before we started recommending it as a place to play. We'll make a post in the forum soon to invite you all.

It should be fun - the final table you will be aiming for is pictured above.. There's going to be a lot more tournaments offered to our members and visitors from now on, and all of them are listed on the new bonus tournaments page.

There may even be a bounty on my head if I make it to any of our tournaments. It won't be hard to bust me either... I'm playing worse than Shamu the whale could play online poker right now.

Have you ever tried to click a mouse with a flipper?
