Just as the game of Baseball was created to satisfy the stereotypical poker player who watches excessive baseball, No Holds Barred was apparently created to satisfy the poker player who is an avid viewer of professional wrestling. Four cards are dealt face-down to each player. Eight community cards are laid out in the center of the table in the shape of a square.

These cards will be flipped over one a time followed by a betting round after each card flipped. Players use the four cards in their hand in conjunction with any three adjacent cards in the square, that is any three cards that are side-by-side, to make the best five card hand.

Some players play this game where the four cards on the corners of the square are wild. These cards, called "turnbuckle cards", are only wild when they are used in a player's hand. If a Ten is turned up on the top right corner, but a player chooses three cards that do not include that Ten, then that Ten is not wild in the player's hand. It stands to reason that hands will be high in this game, especially when players can choose a string of three cards that include two turnbuckle cards, hence two wild cards. As with most High/Low games, it is not suggested that this game be played High/Low if the turnbuckle cards are wild.
