2008 WSOP has begun

May 31, 2008

The 2008 World Series of Poker has started in Las Vegas at the Rio hotel and casino.

The first event was the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em Championship, and it produced a star studded final table.

Nenad Medic, a former basketball player and a current Full Tilt Poker online player emerged as the first bracelet winner for 2008.

In 2nd place was another Full Tilt player, Andy Bloch who was unlucky to lose the heads up contest on his birthday.

After his win Medic had this to say, "It was a tough field, the whole tournament, all the way to the final table...I always had a decent stack. The ace-king versus kings -- I didn't feel too good about that, but it worked out."

Three-hundred and fifty two players started the event, creating a world record $3,308,800 prize pool for a pot-limit hold'em event.

The final table consisted of Medic, Bloch, Kathy Liebert, Mike Sexton, Amit Makhija, Chris Bell, Patrik Antonius, Mike Sowers and 'The Unabomber', Phil Laak.

Liebert and Antonius also made news for signing new endorsement contracts on the same day. Kathy joined team PokerStars, whilst Antonius is now paid to play for Full Tilt Poker, where he was spending a  lot of his time online anyway.

This is how they finished.
