Ivey wins 8th attempt at WPT

February 29, 2008

Phil Ivey had made it to the final table of six players at seven other World Poker Tour events.

With his eighth attempt, he finally broke through and took out first prize at the LA poker classic.

He's widely regarded as one of the best poker players on the planet, both in live tournament play and online at Full Tilt Poker, where he plays the highest limit games available.

But one thing had always both eluded and frustrated him - he had never won a World Poker Tour event.

In the early stages of the final table at Commerce Casino, it looked like history was going to repeat itself. Ivey lost a big pot against Charles Moore and had this to say.

"I was just really frustrated, about the seven other times I've made a WPT final table... I actually felt when I first sat down and lost that big hand, I thought, 'Here we go again'."

But he focused and built up his stack again. After Phil Hellmuth and Scott Montgomery were eliminated, Ivey scooped a $3.14 million pot against Nam Le, reclaiming the chip lead. He later knocked Le out when he hit a three on the river to make a set and crack Nam's aces.

When it got to heads-up play, Ivey had a near 5-to-1 chip advantage over eventual runner-up Quinn Do. Ivey busted Quinn with a full house of aces and eights, winning $1,596,100 for first place and more importantly a World Poker Tour trophy for the cabinet.

Here are the final table placings and prize money awarded.

Place Player Prize Money
1. Phil Ivey $1,596,100
2. Quinn Do $909,400
3. Charles Moore $625,630
4. Nam Le $411,770
