Eastgate wins World Series

Peter Eastgate, a 22 year old PokerStars player from Denmark has won the 2009 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

The profesional poker player becomes the youngest ever player to win the World Series of Poker main event, taking the record from Phil Hellmuth Jnr by 2 years.

With the second highest pize payout in poker history of $US 9,152,416, he also vaults to second place on the WSOP all time money winners list.

The runner up was Russian Ivan Demidov, from Moscow. Final table play lasted 278 hands, over a third of which were played heads up. And for the first time, a tournament blind reached the $1 million mark when play reached level 39.

At the start offinal table play, Eastgate was ranked fourth in chips and eventual third place finisher, Dennis Phillips was chip leader.

After his victory, Eastgate ad this to say;

“I do not think I have realized yet what a big moment this is. It will come the next days and weeks. I expect I will get emotional about it later. But not as much now.”

“I was lucky on the last hand.  Ivan had two pair, and I had a wheel.  When that happens heads-up, all the money is (going to go into the pot).”

"Just because I won the heads-up does not make me a better player than (Demidov).  It goes to show that it is sometimes good to be lucky.”


Eastgate was a part of the "PokerStars Six", six players at the fnal table that play online poker at PokerStars, the world's largest poker room.
