Americas Seek Revenge In 2011 Caesars Cup

It may still be a few weeks away but tension is already building for the 2011 Caesars Cup as the event goes from strength to strength every year.

Inaugurated in 2009, the Caesars Cup is the equivalent to the Ryder Cup in golf, a tournament the pits the best of Europe against the best of Americas.

When it first began it was expected that the Americas team would trounce that of Europe given they boasted the best ranked players in the world with the most prize money and the biggest reputations.

Europe meanwhile had a bunch of relative unknowns who spent more time playing online than they did in live tournaments.

How wrong they were though and Europe destroyed their rivals and well and truly earned the respect they may not have had before the tournaments began.

Since then there’s been plenty of European domination around the world and the Americas are desperate to claw their way back and regain some respect of their own.

The Caesars Cup works off series of heads up games with the first team to win three matches declared the winner.

“Team Americas has a score to settle after what most considered a colossal upset in London,” said WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart.

“You see a real rivalry developing as European players continue to win more tournaments around the world.”

Phil Hellmuth is the captain of the Americas and while he’s already selected Doyle Brunson in his squad there’s plenty of competition for the remaining three positions.

Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, Johnny Chan, Huck Seed, Daniel Negreanu, Tom Dwan, Jason Mercier and Ben Lamb have all being raised as potential candidates.

The European squad is to be led by Bertrand Grospellier and while he hasn’t let slip who he’s thinking of inviting to his team, his Twitter post sure shows he’s excited:

“Go EUROPE GO, let’s show them 2 years ago wasn’t an “upset”! I’m so proud to be the chosen one!”

The 2011 Caesars Cup will be the final event of the 2011 WSOP Europe held on October the 21st.
