Roger Hairabedian Breaks French Drought at World Series of Poker Europe

by | Published: Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Roger Hairabedian won the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe Pot Limit Omaha event on Thursday to become the first Frenchmen to win a tournament at the World Series of Poker Europe.

Hairabedian outlasted a star studded final table to claim the first place prize of €475,300.

The final table contained 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Joe Hachem, three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Michael Mizrachi and two-time bracelet winner Jason Mercier.

Hachem was aiming to become the first World Series of Poker Main Event Champion to win a World Series of Poker Europe event while Mizrachi wanted to become the first person to win two World Series of Poker Europe bracelets.

However, they both had their dreams crushed by Hairabedian who delighted the partisan French crowd with his victory.

“I am very happy to represent France in this WSOP because Barriere is making this a big event. Now it’s the biggest event in Europe and it is good that a French man won a bracelet,” Hairabedian said.

“It’s the best thing we’ve ever done in poker in France. WSOP Europe is a big, big event. In two or three years it will be like Las Vegas, not the biggest, but maybe a quarter of the size.”

The victory was extra special for Hairabedian as he came extremely close to winning the Pot Limit Omaha tournament last year before being eliminated in third place by, ironically, Mizrachi who went on to claim the tournament.

“For one year I thought everyday about how I lost the bracelet last year. I didn’t want to make the same mistake. Last year I made a mistake, I gave a big pot to Michael (Mizrachi). If I played like this last year I could have won,” Hairabedian said.

Esfandiari Wins World Series of Poker Europe Gold Bracelet

by | Published: Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Antonio Esfandiari has continued his stellar form in 2012 with victory in the World Series of Poker Europe €1,100 No-Limit Hold’em.

The Magician outlasted a field of 626 players to walk away with the first place prize of €126,207 and become just the third player to win a World Series of Poker and World Series of Poker Europe event in the same year.

The tournament was the second largest in the history of the World Series of Poker Europe.

Esfandiari began the final day with the second highest chip stack but by the time the field was down to the final table he had taken the chip lead.

He was joined at the final table by five Frenchmen who were all aiming to become the France’s first ever World Series of Poker Europe bracelet winner.

The thirty-three year old professional never lost the chip lead and won the tournament when his Ace-Eight held up against McLean Karr’s Queen-Ten.

The win moved Esfandiari to the top of the World Series of Poker player of the year race but his lead is expected to be short lived as Greg Merson is likely to reclaim the top spot depending on his finish in October’s World Series of Poker Main Event final table.

Esfandiari is now considered one of the world’s best poker players.

He confirmed his position among the elite of the poker world with his incredible performance in the Big One for One Drop event at this year’s World Series of Poker.

The Magician won the high stakes event, claiming a prize of $18 million that put him at the top of the all-time poker tournament money list.

The World Series of Poker Europe continues with the Pot-Limit Omaha event, with a final table containing Michael Mizrachi, Joe Hachem and Jason Mercier, to be concluded tonight.

Hamnett and Kerignard Claim World Poker Tour Victories

by | Published: Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

It has been a busy week for the World Poker Tour with tournaments running in Malta and Atlantic City simultaneously.

Ben Hamnett conquered a field of 1180 other players to win the World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City.

Hamnett went into the final table as the short stack but won a massive pot against chip leader Matthew Burnitz in just the third pot of the day.

From that point forward Hamnett was able to dominate the final table and faced off against Burnitz in a heads-up battle.

Hamnett slowly ground Burnitz’s chip stack into the ground and claimed the victory when his King-Queen held up against Burnitz’s Jack-Ten.

The $ 818,847 prize was easily the biggest of the American Professionals poker career with his previous highest cash being $38,453 earlier this year in the World Series of Poker Main Event.

On another continent Yorane Kerignard also won his maiden World Poker Tour tournament in the World Poker Tour Malta Main Event.

The Frenchmen need a slice of luck to claim the tournament when it got down to the heads-up battle.

He pushed with ace high and was called by Jackson Genovesi who held a pair of tens.

Kerignard hit two pair on the turn and the river to leave an emotional Genovesi distraught.

Kerignard has been a regular on the European Poker Tour in the last few years and has had a number of strong results.

He finished fourth in the 2010 Copenhagen Main Event, sixth in the 2011 San Remo Main Event and fourth in the 2012 Deauville Main Event but this was his first tournament victory.

Kerignard will head back to France with $182,292 and a seat worth $25,500 in the season-ending World Poker Tour World Championship.

The World Poker Tour now heads to South Africa for the Emperors Palace Poker Classic.

Duhamel Robbery Case Hits Court

by | Published: Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

The ex-girlfriend of 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel is expected to plead guilty to the home invasion and violent robbery of the poker professional.

Late last year Duhamel’s home was invaded by two intruders who threatened and beat him before demanding access to Duhamel’s safe.

The thief’s took $115,000 in cash and jewelry worth about $50,000 including Duhamel’s World Series of Poker Championship bracelet.

Duhamel was forced to stay in hospital overnight with minor injuries.

It was later revealed that the ring-leader of the attack was a woman Duhamel dated for a short period named Bianca Rojas-Latraverse.

The twenty-one year old is charged with conspiracy, breaking and entering, aggravated assault, forcible confinement and armed robbery.

Rojas-Latraverse’s attorney announced yesterday that her client had decided to switch her plea to a guilty one as she had “a change of heart” and wanted to restart her life with a “clean slate”.

Duhamel did not comment yesterday.

Duhamel became the first Canadian poker player to win the World Series of Poker Main Event in 2010.

He proved that the victory wasn’t a fluke by winning the High Roller Event at the 2011 European Poker Tour and finished fourth in the 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Championship, losing to fellow World Series of Poker Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker in the final.

World Poker Tour Announces New Event in China

by | Published: Friday, September 21st, 2012

The World Poker Tour has announced it will play an inaugural event in China at the MGM Grand Sanya Resort at the end of the 2012.

The tournament will be held from December 14 to 17 and is the penultimate event of season XI of the World Poker Tour.

The event is a new frontier for the World Poker Tour and the 500 hundred seats available for the main event are expected to be hotly contested.

“WPT National China Tournament Sanya demonstrates the exploding popularity of WPT National and Regional events, which provide players around the world with the opportunity to compete in affordable, world-class poker tournaments,” World Poker Tour CEO Steve Heller said.

“We are very excited about the potential of this tournament as there are thousands of players in China who aren’t able to play in large tournaments such as this without having to deal with the expense and hassle of traveling out of the country.”

China will be the twenty-first different country to host a World Poker Tour event.

Denmark will also host its first World Poker Tour event in 2012, with the World Poker Tour Copenhagen running from November 12 to November 17.

No Chinese player has ever won a World Poker Tour event.

“WPT National China Tournament Sanya is filling a void in the Chinese poker community, and we hope this will be the first of many similar events World Poker Tour will hold in China in coming seasons,” Heller said.
