Stanley Choi wins Macau High Stakes Challenger

Businessman Stanley Choi has beaten some of the biggest names in Poker to win the mega buy-in Macau High Stakes Challenge.

Seventy-three players paid the HK$2,000,000 buy-in for a total prize pool of $23,511,128 (USD), with Choi claiming the first prize of $6,465,560.

Because of the hyper-turbo blind structure plenty of big names were eliminated early as high stakes professional player’s battled wits with wealthy Asian businessmen.

Choi was joined at the final table by four wealthy amateurs as well as Poker superstars Phil Ivey, Sam Trickett and John Juanda.

Ivey made an all-in preflop move early in the final table but his King-Six was dominated by Tang Zheng’s King-Nine and the American was eliminated in eighth place.

British high stakes star, Sam Trickett, was knocked out by Choi shortly afterwards and claimed the seventh place prize of just under $1Million.

Trickett has had an incredible run in high stakes tournaments, after winning the $100,000 buy-in at the Aussie Millions for $1,525,000 and finishing second in the $1,000,000 buy-in Big One for One Drop at this year’s World Series of Poker, winning an incredible $10,112,001.

Juanda had an up and down day and was eventually eliminated in fifth position by Zheng.

Zhengh himself followed Juanda to the rail next, which left the tournament with just three players and Choi holding almost half of the chips.

Choi busted Nicholas Wong and took a commanding chip lead into heads up competition with Zhu Guan Fai.

Amazingly, the heads-up battle lasted just one hand as Fai went all-in with pocket sixes but was dominated by Choi’s pocket tens.

The board was not able to help Fai and he finished in second place but could not be too unhappy with his prize of $4,349,735.

Choi’s $6.4 Million first prize was the largest ever outside of the World Series of Poker and the tenth biggest first prize in the history of tournament poker.
