New Zealander Geoff Smith has scored the biggest victory of his poker career by winning the ANZPT Auckland $2000 No Limit Hold’em Main Event.
Smith outlasted a field of 207 players to take home the first prize of NZ$ 80,502.
The final table of the tournament was played at a rapid pace with Smith claiming victory after only over three hours of play on the final day – making it the shortest final table in ANZPT history.
Smith was shocked that the event had wrapped up so quickly.
“I didn’t think it would be over that quickly to be honest it was crazy,” Smith said.
“It was quiet an aggressive final table so for me it was just a matter of sitting back and watching the others knock each other out for a while and just try to pick up a couple of hands.”
Smith said the turning point of the final table was when he picked up pocket aces and was able to take the chip lead by eliminating the only female at the table Monica Eastick in fourth position.
“I got aces and knocked poor Monica out and I took the chip lead and it was all over,” Smith said.
Smith is a veteran of the New Zealand poker circuit and believes he is currently playing in career best form.
“I played well in the Aussie Millions earlier this year and I thought I was playing really well and I thought I played really well here,” Smith said.
“It’s definitely one of the top moments of my poker career and hopefully there will be more to come.”
The event was the final ANZPT event of 2012 but the circuit will resume in 2013 in Perth.
