Italian poker professional Giacomo Fundaro defeated a field of 146 players to win the World Poker Tour Mazagan event held at the luxurious Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort this weekend.
Fundaro was involved in a grueling heads-up battle with French Bridge Champion Frederic Brunet and survived a number of close shaves to claim the victory.
Fundaro remained extremely focused throughout the final table and appeared exhausted as well as relieved to have secured the biggest tournament victory of his life.
“I am really tired it was a long heads up with a good player,” Fundaro said.
Runner-up Brunet started the final table as the short stack but played superbly to get himself back in the hunt and narrowly missed out on winning the tournament on several occasions during the heads-up battle.
“I was focused and I played my game,” Brunet said.
“I think I played almost perfectly in the first part of the day but when we went heads-up it was more difficult as I don’t normally play heads-up so maybe I made some stupid plays I don’t know.”
Fundaro has been one of the most consistent professional players in the Italian poker scene and has scored some big results in the last year.
The Italian finished 27th in the 2011 European Poker Tour Sanremo € 4,600 No Limit Hold’em Main Event and scored a € 39,994 payday in the Main Event of the 2012 Partouche Poker Tour at Cannes.
He has had previous success on the World Poker Tour finishing 25th and winning € 13,305 in the 2012 WPT Rendez-Vous à Paris.
Season XI of the World Poker Tour continues next week with the Party Poker WPT Prague event commencing on the 3rd of December with a buy-in of € 3,300.
