19 Year Old Adrian Mateos Claims WSOP Europe Main Event

by | Published: Monday, October 28th, 2013

The 2013 World Series of Poker Europe came to a dramatic ending on Friday in the final table of the Main Event, with the season’s last bracelet (along with a cool €1 million) going the way of 19-year-old Spaniard Adrian Mateos.

Defeating local favorite Fabrice Soulier in a marathon heads-up matchup that lasted a grueling five hours, Mateos spoke of his excitement at winning the major event.

“With more money, I can play more events. You will see me more … Next year I can’t go (to Las Vegas), I have to wait, but I will be there”.

Beginning the final day’s proceedings fourth in chips, Benny Spindler boasted a very healthy stack but attempted a massive bluff against Jerome Huge and was called, exiting in sixth place just a few hands later after moving all in with a pair of Queens, only to be beaten out by Mateos’s King-Ten.

Sole American hopeful Ravi Raghavan was the next player to find a seat in the runners-up lounge, despite flopping a royal flush draw against two pair shown by Mateos. The Spaniard led out for 65,000 on a King-Ten-Eight flop and Raghavan raised to 175,000 before being called and in turn moving all-in. Mateous called and revealed King-Eight for two pair, only faced with a pair of aces by Raghavan.

Similarly to Spindler earlier in the day, Frenchman Jerome Huge ran a huge bluff during open play and was unsuccessful, tabling Four-Three for a lowly pair of threes completely counteracted by Soulier’s two pair of Aces and Queens.

Just after the start of three-handed play Dominik Nitsche continued the trend of unsuccessful bluffs and was crippled, never recovering before being shown his €400,000 prize for third place only six hands later.

Mateos entered heads-up play with a commanding 4-1 chip lead over his more favored opponent and slowly pulled further away from Soulier. It took more than 100 hands seal the deal once and for all, when Soulier moved all-in with the Nine-Eight of diamonds hand only to be called by Mateos, who held Ace-King off suit. Another King spiked the turn and Mateos was awarded the €1 million winner’s check.

The sky now appears the limit for the 19-year-old, who will have to bide his time for the next two years until an age of 21 will allow him into the major tournaments of Las Vegas.
