Negreanu Begins 2014 as World Number 1

by | Published: Sunday, January 5th, 2014

From week to week, the Global Poker Index (GPI) releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world, and for the majority of professionals, it is a goal to be perched as high as possible at the turn of any given year to the next.

Utilizing a system that takes works off a player’s results over six half-year periods, the GPI is forever changing, with the top 50 often unrecognizable from one week to the next.

At the turn of 2013-14, renowned Canadian player Daniel Negreanu had earned the honor of top spot, amassing an incredible 3339.35 points on the GPI to sit just above German nationals Ole Schemion on 3201.50 and Marvin Rettenmaier on 3066.74.

Also recently crowned Player of the Decade by the GPI, Negreanu (or KidPoker as he is known in online poker rooms) was initially believed to be claiming second spot in this year’s change-over, as Schemion claimed 2013 Poker Player of the Year honors and seemed the most likely to unseat the reigning champion.

Other notable movers in the top 10 included Ravi Raghavan, who rejoined the GPI top 10 after two great years on tour in a row resulted in more than $2.2 million in prize money, which included victory in the 2012 World Poker Tour Five Diamond World Poker Classic and fifth place in the 2013 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event most recently.

Former top 10 main-stay David Peters was the notable casualty of the past two seasons, falling from his previous sixth position to 12th after a slow 2012 was not completely overturned in season 2013.

Despite not featuring in serious contention, US national Corrie Wunstel made the biggest climb in the last week of 2013 to currently sit in position 245, a mind-blowing 45 positions higher than the previous week’s figures. The Texas local most notably finished 65th in the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event and a commanding fifth in the World Poker Tour bestbet Jacksonville.
