Joey Couden Overcomes Chip Deficit to Win Columbus Main Event

by | Published: Tuesday, May 27th, 2014

Joey Couden came back from a 7-1 chip disadvantage during heads-up play in the 2014 Hollywood Poker Open Columbus Regional Main Event to take out a win. But the poker player never panicked, “You can’t ever let losing enter your mind.”

“It’s a poison,” he continued. “I was born to win this tournament. I’ve been playing in the Columbus area since I was 15,” the Columbus native added.

Final Table Results

Place Player Prize
1 Joey Couden $60,827
2 John Michalak $36,496
3 Christopher Collins $24,330
4 Todd Funderburg $17,944
5 Jimmie Adams $13,483
6 Scott Dehm $11,151
7 Patrick Grace III $9,124
8 Danny Clements $7,096
9 Stephan Birtcher $5,576

After collecting over $60,000 from the win, Couden’s career live tournament earnings has moved above the half-million dollar mark. “I’ll be playing some at the World Series,” he said of his immediate plans for the money.

Couden outlasted a record-setting HPO field of 126 players, who created a total prize pool of $202,754, to take out the top spot. The 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champion, Chris Moneymaker, was one of those players, but was eliminated early on in Day 1. Moneymaker’s hopes of winning his second HPO Regional title of the year were cut short.

At the end of play on Day 1, there were 29 players who would make the cut and return to try and make the money on Day 2. Only 13 would get a cut of the prize pool, so there was plenty of work left for those still in the field.

Couden started his run to the final two when he hit runner-runner nut flush to take down a big pot.

Couden eliminated Christopher Collins in third place ($24,330) with a two pair, guaranteeing himself second or first place.  Heads-up play started with him holding a slight chip advantage over Michalak, but that didn’t last long as Michalak soon took control of the match.

After nearly three hours in, things began to change in Couden’s favor when he doubled with an Ace of Clubs and 10 of Clubs against Michalak’s Ace of Hearts and 6 of Spades. Couden remained on top, eventually eliminating Michalak in second place for $36,496.

Global Poker Index: McDonald Rejoins To 10

by | Published: Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

The Global Poker Index releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world every week, using a formula that rates a player’s results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performing players of the year over two six-month periods, using the USA Today Global Poker Index point system to calculate.

2014 GPI Player of the Year

Rank Player GPI Score Change
1 Keven Stammen 893.30 -
2 Ole Schemion 803.21 -
3 Alex Bilokur 800.07 -
4 Scott Seiver 633.26 -
5 Shyam Srinivasan 626.96 -
6 Mike McDonald 608.20 -
7 Byron Kaverman 600.23 -
8 Ami Barer 594.74 -
9 Dan Heimiller 588.53 2
10 Alexander Denisov 581.06 -1

After Dan Heimiller’s efforts over the past couple of weeks, with wins at the Chicago Poker Classic, he’s broken back into the Top 10 GPI Player of the Year race – straight into 9th place. Heimiller finished 61st in the Heartland Poker Tour California State Poker Championship this week, and his 21st cash prize of 2014 shot him straight back into the top 10.

Jeff Madsen, winner of the California State Poker Championship, is now right outside the top 10 at No. 11 position. His win netted him $160,060 to his pockets and shot him up 13 places on the list.

Keven Stammen remains at the top of the POY race with close to 900 points, but his score hasn’t changed since last week. Neither has second placer Ole Schemion behind by just 90 points, who also happened to win the 2013 GPI Play of the Year.

GPI 300 Top 10

Rank Player GPI Score Change
1 Ole Schemion 3971.85 -
2 Scott Seiver 3710.41 -
3 Byron Kaverman 3450.70 1
4 Vanessa Selbst 3427.99 1
5 Marvin Rettenmaier 3366.52 1
6 Philipp Gruissem 3360.90 -3
7 Dan Smith 3339.95 -
8 Stephen Chidwick 3282.26 -
9 Mike McDonald 3241.52 7
10 Jason Mercier 3222.40 -1

Schemion may still be trailing to Stammen in the Player of the Year race, but he’s well and truly out in front in the Top 10 of the GPI 300 players. With a score of 3971.85, he’s over 260 points clear of his nearest rival Scott Seiver.

Mike McDonald is back in the top 10, jumping seven places to land at No. 9. The player nicknamed “Timex” has cashed only two prizes since his Aussie Millions win, but three of his first four wins were for over one million dollars, which gives him some leeway.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Philipp Gruissem dropped three places to No. 6. The German’s score will only continue to fall, since his score from the GuangDong Asia Millions will fall into Zone 3 in a few weeks’ time. Marvin Rettenmaier, Vanessa Selbst, and Byron Kaverman all benefitted from his slide, moving up one spot each.
