You might enjoy playing poker online from the comfort of your own home, or occasionally heading out to a land-based casino. But both of those options may soon seem too conservative when you read where PokerStars held their latest event. If someone offered you the chance to play poker inside a volcano … would you take it?
Because that’s exactly what PokerStars offered to a group of mostly amateur poker players in Slovenia. That’s right; the online poker room organized a poker event inside a volcano! PokerStars Team Pro Luka “LukaSteel” Kovač even went along for the experience, joining the mostly amateur player group at the Adventure Park Volcania in Goričko, Slovenia for an exciting and fun poker event they won’t soon forget.
This isn’t the first time the online poker mega-giant, PokerStars, has allowed poker players to play the game they love in exotic and unusual locations. As part of their “Extreme Challenge” adventures, they’ve held events in igloos, a coal mine, and a ski jump hill over the past four years. But a volcano definitely tops the list.
As it turns out, a bad poker hand can happen anywhere – even inside a volcano. Kovač exited the event when his pocket queens were cracked by ten-two off-suit by the lead singer of one of Slovenia’s most popular bands, Tabu.
Kovač wrote about what it’s like to play poker in a once-active volcano in his PokerStars blog Poker in a Volcano. According to the star, all players had to “put our helmets on and went into a special “elevator”, which brought us “20,000 feet underground” where we walked into a “lava tunnel”” of the volcano, which hasn’t been active for more than 3 million years.
Summing up the event, Kovač said: “All in all, it was a fun and relaxing event, everybody had a great time and it’s nice to play a tournament from time to time, where you have nothing to lose. It was also really exciting to meet so many celebrities.”

The Hollywood Poker Open Championship Event kicks off at the M Resort in Las Vegas on June 27, which is less than one week away.
The tournament, which features a $2,500 buy-in with a $500,000 guaranteed prize pool, runs from the 27th until the 29th. You can expect to see many Vegas-regular poker pros at the event, including HPO ambassador Chris Moneymaker, just like last year.
The second season of the championship has grown from last year, with even more seat winners set to participate thanks to the addition of six new regional stops and increased local promotions at Penn National Gaming properties over the past eight months.
Even more seats are due to be handed out this week. The M Resort is set to host eight no-limit hold’em satellites that will award the winners a seat into the $2,500 Main Event. Each qualifier has a buy-in of $235 and will guarantee at least one Main Event seat. The satellites will run from June 25 – 27, with times ranging from 10 AM – 10 PM. Click here to read the structure of the eight Mega/Turbo satellites.
One of the highlights of the three day Hollywood Poker Open tournament is the $1,800 pot-limit Omaha event, which will begin at 2 PM local time on Saturday, June 28.
“We had strong momentum following a successful Season 1 of the Hollywood Poker Open last year, and that has continued with each regional event this year,” said Gaye Gullo, Vice President of Marketing for Penn National Gaming. “Our players value the numerous opportunities to get in on the action for the Hollywood Poker Open. Offering a Las Vegas Championship is icing on the cake for what’s grown to be a well-respected tournament series, and we’re proud of that.”
Last year, Ana Marquez outlasted a field of 631 to take out the top prize of $320,189 in the Championship Event, defeating Ryan Tepen heads-up for the title. She was joined in the Main Event final table by Kory Kilpatrick, who came 3rd with $129,641, Ramzi Jelassi, 4th with $90,080, Sam Stein, 5th with $65,461, and Max Greenwood, 6th with $50,803.
Who will take out the top prize this year? Stay tuned to find out!

In a week full of poker deals, another one has just been announced. Poker Night in America announced an agreement with CBS Sports Network on Thursday, June 19, that will see the new and exciting poker television show broadcast to a national audience. Beginning on June 29, the show is scheduled to run for 26 consecutive weeks at 10 PM ET (7 PM PT) every Sunday night.
“We’re making poker fun again — that’s our real goal,” said Todd Anderson, the creator of the show and president, in a press release. “We think poker players and fans have been looking for something new and fresh for a long time. We believe Poker Night in America will soon become must-see television for all serious players and fans. Our tag-ling says it all, ‘bringing personality back to poker.’”
Poker Night in America has held four events so far. The first was at the Turning Stone in Verona, NY, which was followed by the second event at Peppermill Reno in Reno, NV. The third event was held at the Rivers Casino Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA at the end of 2014 while the fourth and so far latest event was held at Maryland Live! Casino in Hanover, MD earlier this year. Poker Night in America will be returning to this last venue at the end of July.
Anderson, with his company Rush Street Productions, created the idea for Poker Night in America in mid-2013 as a one-of-a-kind poker experience emphasizing and bringing out the fun, variety, entertainment, and interesting aspects of poker.
Each game allows regular poker players to go head-to-head with the professionals. Just send in an audition tape to qualify. Head to www.PokerNight.com for more information.
