Mid-States Poker Tour Returns to Indiana

by | Published: Monday, July 28th, 2014

The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) may currently be hosting a $1,100 Main Event at the Meskwaki Casino in Tama, Iowa but in less than one week the next Main Event of Season 5 will kick off at Majestic Star Casino in Gary, Indiana - there’s no waiting around in the MSPT!

MSPT logoMajestic Star and the MSPT launched qualifiers for the tournament, which will feature a $200,000 guarantee, on the weekend that will continue throughout the week.

The series began with a MSPT Main Event $250 qualifier on Saturday. Similar qualifiers will be held on Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:00 PM local time, with a special midday qualifier also to be held on Thursday. Finally, two last-chance $250 qualifiers will be held on Friday and Saturday at 9:30 AM. There will also be $65 Multi-Table Super Satellites, which will see 20% of the field advance to the $250 qualifiers, held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We have been putting the word out about the MSPT since we signed on with them and have been receiving good feedback on Majestic Star hosting this event,” Majestic Star poker room manager Darrell Sangster previously told PokerNews. “We have had many calls about the event. So there has been a general buzz about this MSPT event.”

Majestic Star Bonus Events are also scheduled throughout the week, including:

  • $80 No-Limit Hold’em at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30
  • $55 No-Limit Hold’em at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 3
  • $60 No-Limit Hold’em at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 3

The MSPT is no stranger to the Majestic Star casino, having already stopped there in its fifth season. Back in March, Ken Baime of Glenview, Illinois topped a field of 301 players to win the $77,681 first-place prize.

“Bryan Mileski and the MSPT staff are great. They were always present and very accessible. They take their job very seriously and run a great tournament and were constantly hustling all over the place,” Baime told PokerNews. “I also really like the players in this tournament. One of the goals of the MSPT is to be accessible to recreational players and players with jobs. So, while the tournament had its share of pros and semi-pros, there were also a number of people with jobs. So, even though it was an $1,100 buy-in tournament, the general vibe was very relaxed and fun.”

The Main Event will be held over three days, kicking off at Majestic Star casino on Friday at 4 PM with Day 1a. This first day will contain 14 levels for players to get through. Saturday’s Day 1b will also begin at 4 PM and play the same number of levels. The remaining players from each two flights will combine on Sunday morning at 10 AM to play for the championship.

Pennsylvania Next State to Legalize Online Poker?

by | Published: Thursday, July 24th, 2014

Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware are on the list of U.S. states to legalize and regulate online gaming, but another state could soon join that list – Pennsylvania.

Parx Casino set to launch simulated online casino in Pennsylvania.

In preparation of online gambling (including online casinos and poker rooms) being introduced to the Keystone State, Parx Casino, which is located in Bensalem, PA, has supposedly struck a deal with gaming developer GameAccount Network (GAN) to offer a stimulated online gaming experience for those players who just can’t wait.

“GAN has demonstrated its regulated gaming capability in New Jersey and the merits of simulated gaming when integrated with a casino management system,” said John Dixon, CTO of Greenwood Entertainment and Racing, which owns Parx Casino. “By deploying its system on-property, Parx Casino will have the opportunity to launch simulated gaming nationwide before year’s end and be well prepared in the event regulation of real-money internet gaming emerges in the state of Pennsylvania.”

The plan will be to launch the simulated gaming experience, comprising initially of just casino slots, in the fourth quarter of 2014 to players nationwide. When online gaming becomes legal in Pennsylvania, the site will be able to automatically switch to a real-money platform.

However, if you’re in a state that currently does allow real-money online poker, nothing beats the real thing. Check out Carbon Poker Carbon Poker to being your game.

A Pennsylvanian study released in early May projected that full regulated online gaming could potentially generate $184 million revenue for the state in the first year alone, growing to $307 million in subsequent years. Online poker would account for $77 million of the first-year revenue, and $129 million in the established years after that.

These statistics inspired State Sen. Kim Ward, who chairs the Senate Community, Economic and Recreational Development Committee that ordered the study, to become an advocator of bringing online gambling to the state.

“Internet gaming, pensions and liquor are the big issues on our plate,” Ward previously said in a phone interview with PokerNews. “iGaming hasn’t been there in the past, but now that this looks like it could be a source of income it will probably become a prominent part of the discussion.”

In June, a hearing was held to discuss the iGaming study, and most casinos showed interest in moving forward with some form of online gambling in Pennsylvania, which is the second-largest casino market in the U.S. with 12 casino properties.

Online gambling looks set to come to Pennsylvania, but in what form and at what time is still up in the air. Why wait to play your favorite poker varieties online?
