Crown Resorts Limited Acquires Las Vegas Site

by | Published: Saturday, August 9th, 2014

It was revealed earlier this week that Crown Resorts Limited acquired a 34.6-acre vacant site on Las Vegas Boulevard for approximately $280 million. The site, which was previously occupied by the New Frontier Casino, was bought via a foreclosure auction.

Crown Resorts, while new to the American scene, is one of the largest entertainment groups in Australia. The corporation is behind the southern hemisphere’s most prestigious tournament series – the Aussie Millions. The schedule for the 2015 Aussie Millions Poker Championship was just released, which you can read about here.

Crown Resorts have created a new unnamed resort company for the Las Vegas site, along with Andrew Pascal—former President and COO of Wynn Las Vegas—and with financial support from Oaktree Capital Management L.P.

Plans for the site are still being finalized, but according to a press release the company is set to break ground in the latter half of 2015 and have the project complete by 2018.

crown resort casino“For over 25 years, I’ve studied the ever‐shifting Las Vegas landscape,” said Pascal, who will serve as a Chairman and CEO of the new company. “I’ve always been inspired by this city’s capacity for reinvention. I’m excited to have my hand in crafting something new and fresh for the resurgent Las Vegas market.”

Likewise, Chairman of Crown Resorts Limited James Packer, who will also serve as a Chairman of the new company said, “You can’t be in the gaming industry and not have a special reverence for Las Vegas — that’s where it all began. As we have built Crown Resorts into a thriving international company with successful casino ventures in Australia, Macau, and London, we’ve always kept our eye on Las Vegas. And while we fell short in past attempts to enter that market, we now have the ideal opportunity — with a great local partner in Andrew, a leading financial investor in Oaktree, and the perfect piece of property.”

“We acquired our interest in the storied Frontier site because we believed it was the best piece of undeveloped land on the Las Vegas Strip,” said Bruce Karsh, President of Oaktree, a leader among global investment managers specializing in alternative investments. “When Andrew approached us and shared his vision for the site and his partnership with Crown, we were eager to reinvest a portion of the proceeds from our debt investment and become an equity partner in their exciting new venture.”

This is Crown’s third attempt at gaining entry into the Las Vegas scene after Fontainebleau Resorts LLC and Cannery Casino Resorts LLC both failed to develop.

2015 Aussie Millions Schedule Announced

by | Published: Tuesday, August 5th, 2014

Last Friday, Crown Melbourne announced its schedule for the illustrious Aussie Millions Poker Championship in 2015. The series will kick off the New Year, beginning on Wednesday, January 14 and running through to Monday, February 2, 2015. It will consist of 21 events.

crown: aussie millions logoHeadlining the schedule will be the ever-popular Aussie Millions Main Event, which will run from Sunday, January 25 through to Sunday, February 1. The winner of the Main Event will take home an estimated AU$1.6 million. This is the same grand prize Ami Barer took home in this year’s event, which was an event to remember. Barer topped a field of 668 players, defeating Sorel Mizzi along with an entire final table of poker pros in a final day that lasted a grueling 12 hours.

Also returning to the schedule for another year are the mouth-watering big buy-in “Challenge” events, which include the: $25,000 Challenge, $100,000 Challenge, and LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge. These “Challenge” tournaments draw impressive numbers, which aren’t limited to the impressive Main Event. In 2014, the $25K Challenge received 65 entries, the $100K Challenge drew 76 entries, and Phil Ivey topped a field of 46 entries to take out the LK Boutique $250K Challenge.

“Crown Melbourne’s Aussie Millions Poker Championship has effectively become one of the top poker majors and a favorite amongst some of the most renowned players in the world,” said Crown Melbourne’s Director of Poker Jim Preston. “And the stage has never been brighter.”

In 2014, the Aussie Millions Main Event partnered with the PokerStars.net Asia-Pacific Poker Tour for the first time, and following a successful run it appears the partnership will remain in 2015. Because of the partnership, the Aussie Millions schedule has to be pushed back to begin later in January. This is to allow players the chance to compete in both the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and the Aussie Millions. The PCA is scheduled to take place from January 6-14 in 2015, which means players travelling on to Melbourne won’t miss the majority of the Aussie Millions schedule.

Chen Qin Wins Biggest Poker Event Held Outside USA

by | Published: Friday, August 1st, 2014

Last weekend, the inaugural PokerStars.net 2014 Beijing Millions concluded with China’s Chen Qin topping the field of 2,732 entries and taking out a prize of ¥675,000 (approx. $109,000).

The tournament, which had a buy-in of ¥3,000 ($480) and created a total prize pool worth ¥7,376,400 ($1,195,000) that was distributed among the top 202 finishers, set a record for the largest tournament ever held outside of the United States.

Beijing Million Final Table Results:

Place Player Country Prize
1 Chen Qin China ¥675,000
2 Yang Zhang China ¥700,000
3 Tong Shen China ¥650,000
4 Feng Bai China ¥587,500
5 Jing Liu China ¥312,500
6 Chen Hao China ¥250,000
7 Qiang Liu China ¥205,000
8 Hui Xu China ¥162,650
9 Yuanye Chen China ¥125,000

The Beijing Millions, held at the Beijing Star Poker Club, marked the first time the Asia-Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) held a tournament on mainland China, and it proved to be a tremendous success.

“We always believed that this would be a successful event, but this result greatly exceeded our wildest expectations,” said APPT President Danny McDonagh. “It’s a great honor for PokerStars and the APPT team to be selected to support this tournament. It’s been a historical week. Not just the record itself, but how it may change the future landscape for poker in China.”

chen qin beijing millions winnerThe tournament was part of a 10-day poker festival organized by the Beijing Sports Competitions Administration Centre, a division of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports. It broke another record, becoming the largest live PokerStars-sponsored tournament – surpassing the previous mark of 2,446 entries set by the 2013 Brazilian Series of Poker.

With over 2,700 initial players, the tournament required six starting days, but the monster-sized field was surprisingly reduced to a manageable 188 for Sunday’s Day 2.

As you can see from the table above, all final table players were Chinese. This ensured the title would stay on home soil. Qin ended up taking a chip lead of 17,100,000 to 9,000,000 over Yang Zhang into the final heads-up play, using it to his advantage to take out the title.

“I’m so happy to run such a successful event in Beijing and have the support of APPT and the event organizers from the Beijing Sports and Administration Centre,” said AoBoTe principal Jian Yang. “The APPT is a professional event management group capable of running major international poker tournaments and together we created a miracle with the Beijing Millions. I hope the cooperation between APPT and Star Poker will strengthen and develop poker further in China.”
