Phil Ivey Wins Ninth World Series of Poker Bracelet

by | Published: Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

Poker superstar Phil Ivey has claimed his ninth World Series of Poker bracelet after winning the $2,200 Mixed Event at the 2013 World Series of Poker Asia Pacific.

Ivey took home the first place prize of $51,840 but it is the bracelet that he will cherish which know puts him in equal forth with poker legend Johnny Moss on the list of all-time bracelet winners behind only Phil Hellmuth (13), Doyle Brunson (10) and Johnny Chan (10).

Ivey said he was happy to win his ninth World Series of Poker bracelet especially after the heartbreak he suffered during the 2012 World Series of Poker when he final tabled on five occasions but failed to win an event.

“I definitely wanted to win this event especially when I got deep and I thought I had a chance,” Ivey said.

“My last six finishes at the last six final tables were very tough and it took a lot out of me so I’m happy that I had the chance to finish this one.”

Ivey was especially happy to win a World Series of Poker bracelet at the Crown Casino in Australia.

“This is my favorite place to play,” Ivey said.

“I love coming down here and I love the feeling that I have when I come here.”

Ivey is already considered by many to be the greatest poker player of all time but said he wants to add more bracelets to add to his poker legacy.

“As I have gotten older I’ve started to think about my history in Poker and where I am going to stand so it’s important for me to win these bracelets and I’m trying to catch Phil [Hellmuth],” Ivey said.

“It’s tough because he keeps winning them but I’m looking forward to the summer.”

The final table of the event was expected to lead to a heads-up battle between Ivey and fellow Poker superstar Daniel Negreanu, who together held almost half the chips on the table, but Negreanu was eliminated in fourth position leaving Brandon Wong to face Ivey in heads-up competition.

Wong said it was a thrill to be able to play against Ivey.

“This place would be empty right now if it wasn’t Phil Ivey so it draws a lot of interest and its really fun,” Wong said.

“To win a bracelet is every poker players dream and to be able to win one against Phil Ivey would be great.”

The 2013 World Series of Poker Asia Pacific continues today with the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event beginning today.
