Igor Kurganov Wins $25,000 Aussie Millions Challenge

by | Published: Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Igor Kurganov has capped off his stellar 2013 Aussie Millions campaign with a victory in the $25,000 Aussie Millions Challenge at the Crown Casino on Sunday.

Kurganov outlasted a tough final table to win his first ever Aussie Millions Title and the first place prize of $275,000.

The Russian previously finished second in the $100,000 Challenge, winning $610,000, before finishing fourth in the $250,000 Challenge for a collect of $500,000.

The laid-back Kurganov was delighted with his success throughout the prestigious event.

“I am quiet contempt with the results here,” Kurganov said.

“It was a really good trip, I’ve played a lot of poker but I couldn’t regret it… the run here was good enough to get me past the bubble every time and I’m really happy to have won an event as well.”

European players had an excellent 2013 Aussie Millions and Kurganov found himself at final tables with friends on several occasions.

“Having my friends at the table makes it harder because I consider them all really good players so I think I would have traded nearly anybody for most of the players in this field,” Kurganov said.

“At the same time having them at the table makes you more sharp because you generally don’t want to make mistakes but even less so when your friends are watching and judging you afterwards.”

Kurganov had a breakthrough season in 2012 winning the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em High Roller event at the Deep Stack Extravaganza III at Las Vegas as well as the $25,000 8 Max High roller at the European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo.

The High-Roller specialist is currently ranked just outside the top 50 in the Global Poker Index but will likely see a considerable rise when the Aussie Millions results are counted to his tally.

2013 Aussie Millions Updates

by | Published: Saturday, January 26th, 2013

The 2013 Aussie Millions is well and truly underway. Two gold rings have already been given away while another tournament has reached its final stages. Today, we will get you to speed with all the action, so far, from the 2013 Aussie Millions.

Rupert Elder Wins $1,100 Opening Event

Brit Rupert Elder has crushed the dreams of locals to win the opening gold ring of the 2013 Aussie Millions.

Elder overcame a field of 1137 players to capture the tournament and the first place prize of $250,000.

The local hope at the table was Australian prodigy Brendon Rubie, who won the event last year, but he was eliminated in fifth place to leave the four European players remaining to battle it out four-handed.

Elder had the chip lead for the majority of the final day of the tournament and defeated Martin Finger in a heads-up battle that lasted only a couple of hands.

Elder has now won over $1.5 million in his tournament poker career and will be looking to add even more in the Aussie Millions Main Event that starts next week.

Vakilli wins $1,100 Pot Limit Omaha Event

Sam Vakilli dominated the final table of $1,100 Pot Limit Omaha Event to win the second gold ring of the Aussie Millions.

Vakilli and John Messina quickly took control of the final table and it took just forty-five minutes for the final table to be down to just two players.

It was tougher work after that for Vakilli who took over three hours to wear down his opponent and claim victory and the $53,600 first place prizemoney.

21 Players Left in $1,100 No Limit Holdem Shootout Event

Vanessa Selbst, Jake Balsiger and Annette Obrestad were just some of the big names who failed to progress to the second day of the $1,100 No Limit Holdem Shootout Event.

The twenty-one remaining players will return to Crown Casino today with the top three players from each table progressing to the final table.

2013 Aussie Millions Kicks Off With Celebrity Tournament

by | Published: Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

The 2013 Aussie Millions has kicked off with the annual staging of the Joe Hachem and Shane Warne Celebrity Charity Poker tournament.

The tournament is now in its sixth year and brings together celebrities, professional poker players and amateurs to raise money for the Shane Warne Foundation – the charity founded by Australian cricketing legend Shane Warne.

2005 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Joe Hachem said he and Warne had bonded over their love of their families and want to bring happiness to children that aren’t as fortunate as their own.

“The Shane Warne Foundation helps sick and underprivileged kids in Australia and aboard,” Hachem said.

“You know how passionate I am about my family so it is a perfect match with Shane and I – he loves his kids so much and we are so lucky to have healthy kids that live a privileged life.

“If we can do anything to help some other kids have a better life that is great. “

The star-studded celebrity line-up included Liz Hurley, Australian comedians Glenn Robbins and Andy Lee, actor Gary Sweet as well as legendary Australian boxer Jeff Fenech.

Fenech, who is a previous winner of the tournament, said that he loves playing in the event and paid tribute to the hard work done by Warne.

“It is always great to be involved with the Shane Warne Foundation – He does a lot of work, people don’t realize what a generous and hardworking guy that Shane is,” Fenech said.

The Poker world was well represented in the tournament with Annette Obrestad, Robert Williamson III and Tony Hachem all taking part as well as 2012 October Niners Jake Balsiger, Jesse Sylvia and Russell Thomas who all played at the same table once again.

Joining Sylvia at the table was his girlfriend who has Sylvia worried about how fast she is improving.

“I’ve been teaching her how to play and she is getting better than I am,” Sylvia said.

“It’s really scary every time we play together she crushes me.”

Hachem proved his dedication to the tournament and the Shane Warne Foundation by blinding off his chips in the latter stages of $1,100 opening event of the Aussie Millions in order to host the event with Warne.

The tournament was won by Mike Turnly who won a seat in the 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event as well as the 2013 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific Main Event.
