Paul Klann has overcome a star-studded field to win the 2013 World Poker Tour Los Angeles Poker Classic.
Klann defeated 516 other players, including forty-three former World Poker Tour Champions, to win his first major tournament and take home the first place prizemoney of $1,004,090.
The Canadian was delighted to score what was easily the biggest result of his poker career.
“It’s amazing, its feels great and completely surreal,” Klann said.
Klann took a conservative approach to the final table and was able to survive to the heads-up battle without eliminating a player from the final table.
Klann’s heads-up opponent Paul Volpe had taken the opposite approach and was extremely aggressive, dominating the final table.
Klann made a tactical decision to switch gears entering the heads-up battle and after only a dozen hands had eliminated Volpe’s two to one chip lead.
The final hand was virtually a flip for the tournament with Klann’s King-Ten holding up against Volpe’s Jack-Nine.
“My game plan was to be a lot more aggressive heads-up, so that worked out and was exactly what I did,” Klann said.
The affable Canadian could not wipe the smile off his face and was beaming with excitement when asked how he planned to spend his $1 million payday.
“I’m sure my wife has already spent it,” Klann laughed.
Klann took part in the 2012 World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star event, eliminating WPT commentator Mike Sexton, and said he was likely to return to the tournament this year.
“I could probably use a little bit of a rest between now and then,” Klann said.
The 2013 Bay 101 Shooting Star tournament has begun with bounties Faraz Jaka, Mohsin Charania and Michael Mizrachi already eliminated.

Season XI of the World Poker Tour is heating up with the popular LA Poker Classic and Bay 101 Shooting Star event being held over the next fortnight.
The 2013 LA Poker Classic will be the first televised World Poker Tour event of the year commencing on Saturday February 23rd with a $10,000 buy-in.
The tournament always draws a very talented field and 2013 will be no exception with Joe Serock, Scott Seiver, Barry Greenstein and Hoyt Corkins all locked in to compete in the tournament.
World Poker Tour CEO Steve Heller said he was delighted the tour was returning to one of its most loyal tournaments.
“As the culmination of six weeks of live tournaments at Commerce Casino, the WPT LA Poker Classic Championship is consistently one of the most popular events on tour,” Heller said.
“World Poker Tour is thrilled to be broadcasting this event for the eleventh consecutive season and we look forward continuing our relationship with the Commerce Casino for many years to come.”
The Bay 101 Shooting Star is the most unique stop on the World Poker Tour with $2500 bounties being placed on the heads of some of the most popular professional poker players in the world.
This year poker superstars like Mike Sexton, Antonio Esfandiari, Daniel Negreanu and Jason Somerville will all have bounties on their heads.
World Poker Tour President Adam Pliska said that excitement was building for the popular event.
“The atmosphere at Bay 101 is always electric with some of the most enthusiastic fans coming to get a glimpse of the world’s best and most celebrated poker players,” Pliska said.
“Unlike any other event of its kind, WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star has the excitement of a Hollywood movie premiere with the intensity of all-star competition.
“It’s simply one event that anyone who loves poker should not miss.”
The Bay 101 Shooting Star tournament begins on March 4th.
