Twenty-Four Players Remain in WPT World Championship

by | Published: Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Amir Babakhani finished day three of the World Poker Tour World Championship as chip leader and is on track to become only the second player in history to win back-to-back WPT titles.

Babakhani has 1,220,000 in chips followed by Brandon Steven (1,091,000), Matt Hyman (1,042,000), Hyon Kim (891,000) and A.P. Phahurat (878,000).

If Babakhani is able to convert his chip lead into victory he will join Marvin Rettenmaier as the only player to win two World Poker Tour tournaments in a row after his breakthrough victory in the WPT Canadian Spring Championship earlier this month.

It will be a tricky assignment for Babakhani as there are still a number of leading players left in the hunt for the WPT World Championship.

Daniel Negreanu is currently in the best form of his life and recovered from a disappointing day two to finish day three in the top twenty.

The Canadian currently holds 444,000 and still has a great deal of work to do but with a World Series of Poker Bracelet and a top four finish in the European Poker Tour Grand Final it would take a brave man to bet against him.

One of the big stories of the tournament has been the run of Erick Lindgren who has only just re-joined the tournament poker circuit after a stint in rehab to treat his gambling addicition.

Lindgren dominated the lead-up events to the Main Event, winning the $ 1,500 No Limit Hold’em event for $ 39,722 and finishing third in the $ 1,000 No Limit Hold’em.

Lindgren is currently sitting just outside the top ten but has an excellent opportunity to win his third World Poker Tour Title and announce his return as a serious tournament contender.

Other big name players still in the hunt include Jason Mercier and Dan Shak while Phil Hellmuth, Antonio Esfandiari,Ben Lamb , Mike Linster and Matt Salsberg were all eliminated.

Day four of the World Poker Tour World Championship is already underway and you can stay up to date with all the action here at Poker.Com.

Could The Poker Brat Triumph?

While many have focused on Phil Hellmuth losing out to John Juanda and Eric Rodawig, The Poker Brat is currently in position to take Player of the Year honors.

Phil Hellmuth has managed to cash four times so far in the 2011 World Series of Poker, taking about $530,000 in prize money for his efforts. The WSOP has been more about the achievements than the money for Phil, though, and it seems he is just a hair’s breadth away from winning his twelfth WSOP bracelet.

Losing against John Juanda is no shame at all, and Hellmuth came in with an incredibly shortstack when going heads up against Eric Rodawig. While more impressive achievements than two second place finishes at the same WSOP have been recorded, it is still not an easy task and Phil is perhaps fittingly ranked second in the current Player of the Year rankings.

While Hellmuth has strong competition from the current leader Ben Lamb, it seems like Lamb is more of a PLO specialist than anything. A couple of PLO events are still left to run, but Hellmuth is looking a good chance in The Poker Player’s Championship and final table finish in that along with another cash just might put him over the top.
