Chinese Businessman Jian Yang has claimed the honor of 2013 Asian Poker Player of the Year after leading the standings for the last few months.

Despite several events still to be decided at the Asia Championship of Poker, Yang was so far ahead in the standings that he had already in fact locked up the honor, however was officially recognized on Friday as the first player from mainland China to receive the award since Pokerstars Pokerstars first began recognizing the best player on the Asian tour in 2009.

Despite only cashing three times throughout the season, the 50-year-old poker fan was sure to make all of them count, beginning the year with a fourth-place finish in the Macau Poker Cup for US $17,222, and not cashing again until September, when he took out the ACOP Platinum Series Main Event for US $26,641. Following these, his final cash at the ACOP warm-up of US $219,230 (by far his biggest) mathematically locked him in place as Asia’s Player of the Year.

For his efforts, Yang received a year-long sponsorship to all major PokerStars Live Macau tournaments as well as his name engraved on the Asian Player of the Year trophy; held at the PokerStars Live Macau poker room in the City of Dreams Casino.

Yang was ecstatic after being awarded the honor, and outlined what his victory will mean to his homeland.

“Winning the Asia Player of the Year means a lot to me … I really feel so honored to wear the PokerStars patch in tournaments next year.

“My win will encourage a lot of players in China. I hope to pass on my story and be their role model” Yang said.
