The 40 year rule has been dubbed the “Chip Reese Rule” as that was his age when he was inducted, the youngest of any player so far. That will now be the official minimum, and it will be interesting to see if this makes any difference to the voting.
We have to wonder why, though. Phil Ivey, arguably the best player in the world, is now no longer eligible for Hall of Fame acceptance for 5 more years. Also, when guys like Tom Dwan are doing as much as anybody to advance the cause of poker, should they really need to wait another 15 years or more if the voters think they deserve a Hall of Fame spot? Daniel Negreanu is also now ineligible for several years, and it has to be wondered to what purpose?
Overall, we don’t support this change, as we think it is needless. Basically, players are becoming masters at poker at a much younger age, and it is harder than ever to really stand out from the other pros. If the voters want a younger player in the Hall of Fame, then they should be able to vote them in.
