Kai Chang has defeated a star studded final table to win the 2013 World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star Main Event.

Chang outlasted a field of 643 entries to add his name to the list of World Poker Tour champions and take home the first place prize of $666,740.

Heading into the final table Chang was considered a heavy outsider as he was sitting fifth in chips behind leading poker professionals Erik Seidel and Paul Volpe.

Chang wasn’t happy finishing fifth and was ultra-aggressive in the opening stages of the final table; winning twelve of the first forty-eight hands played.

“I was really fortunate and very happy that I had an opportunity to be aggressive because of the lucky table draw,” Chang said.

“I tried to pick my spots and I felt like after a while I was able to get decent tells so I think I was just lucky to bluff when they didn’t have any hands.”

Change was awarded for his aggression when he eliminated Chris Johnson in fifth position and his task became much easier when Poker Hall of Famer Siedel eliminated by Paul Volpe.

The in-form Volpe, playing at his second final table in as many weeks, moved all-in with Queen-Ten and was quickly called by Change was holding Ace-Nine.

Volpe received no help from the board but his third place finish was enough to send him to the lead of the World Poker Tour Season XI Player of the Year Standings.

Chang started the heads-up battle with a two to one chip lead and it took him over six hands to eliminate Danny Nguyen and win his first ever major tournament.

Chang clearly enjoyed his success and said he was keen to add more victories when asked what his plans were.

“Play more tournaments in the World Poker Tour,” Chang said.

The World Poker Tour continues at the end of March in Venice for the World Poker Tour Gioco Digitale Venice Grand Prix.
