by | Published: Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

The poker festival organized last year to celebrate the beginning of the 10th season of the European Poker Tour was such a success, PokerStars is bringing it back. This time it will be to celebrate a huge milestone, the 100th EPT in Barcelona, Spain, which is taking place at the very start of Season 11.

PokerStars announced the impressive 43-event heavy schedule in a press release sent to the media on Wednesday. The poker festival will run from August 16 to 27, 2014, in the Casino Barcelona.

Seminole Hard Rock Posts Dates for $10M and $100K Events

by | Published: Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

The Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida rocked the poker world in 2013 when it announced a $10 million guarantee tournament. The $5,300 buy-in event smashed the guarantee by close to $2 million, and the eventual winner, Blair Hinkle, took home nearly $1.75 million for his efforts.

The tournament was such a success the casino is bringing it back in 2014. The Seminole Hard Rock released its entire schedule for the 2014 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open on Tuesday, and another $10 million guarantee was on the schedule for August 28. It will be followed by a $100,000 Super High Roller Deep Stack No-Limit Hold’em on September 1. Both of these high profile events will be allowing reentries.

The 23-event festival, which begins on August 14, will also feature a $2,200 eight-game mix, a $2,200 six-max, and a $1,650 bounty tournament.

The Seminole Hard Rock pushed their series closer to September, perhaps because of a potential scheduling conflict between the $10 million guarantee and the European Poker Tour Barcelona – the 100th EPT event ever held. But now the first festival of Season 11 of the EPT wraps up two days before the Seminole’s flagship event, so there are no potential overlaps.

Borgata Introduces State-of-the-Art Poker Chips Following January Scandal

by | Published: Friday, April 11th, 2014

Poker enthusiasts out there may remember the counterfeit chip scandal that rocked the Borgata Winter Poker Open $2 Million Guarantee. The event was suspended, and later cancelled, after counterfeit chips were found in a player’s hotel toilet. Christian Lusardi, 42, was ultimately charged for the crime.

Borgata aren’t willing to let anything like it happen again. In preparation for the 2014 Borgata Spring Poker Open, which is happening right now, the Borgata Casino Hotel & Spa has introduced a new range of poker chips.

The new state-of-the-art chips were created for the 17-event series running from April 8 – 26 that culminates with the $5 million guarantee World Poker Tour Championship.

Tournament Director Tab Duchateau tweeted a picture of the new chips on Monday, along with the message “Borgata Spring Open Event 1a 1 mill guar. starts tom. at 11am. will be using new chips with enhanced security #warned.”

The poker chips have distinct special markings when viewed under a blue light, making it instantly easier to spot counterfeit ones. Since Monday, the tournament staff has been verifying chips at every table during each break.

“This was very expensive, but very necessary,” Borgata Senior Vice President Joe Lupo told the Associated Press. “In order to have the biggest tournaments in Atlantic City and as the market leader, we need to ensure the integrity of the games.”

“We will be checking chips randomly throughout the day using a new process involving the UV lights,” Lupo concluded.

The European Poker Tour (EPT) recently used similar blue-light technology in its most recent stop in Vienna.

A member of the Borgata staff also spoke to PokerNews Live Reporting Team, and revealed there are “other” means of verifying chips in their power. To keep these a secret from possible cheaters, the verification process was no further explained.

We will see during the rest of the Open if these anti-counterfeit measures find any potential cheaters.

EPT Set to Host Blockbuster for 100th Event

by | Published: Monday, January 13th, 2014

The European Poker Tour is set to host its 100th event this August, and has revealed they will be hosting Europe’s largest ever Poker festival in Barcelona, Spain.

Spanning from August 16-27, 2014, the Casino Barcelona event will officially mark the beginning of season 11 of the EPT, and will partner with the locally-renowned ‘Estrellas Poker Tour’ from the 16th-21st to produce what is sure to be a truly memorable 12 day Poker extravaganza.

EPT President Edgar Stuchly said the Tour could not be more excited about the 100th event, particularly as it will be held in one of the world’s most picturesque cities.

“The EPT was born in Barcelona so it’s very fitting to celebrate EPT’s 100th event in true style and with unforgettable poker” Stuchly said.

“EPT Barcelona is one of the most popular tour stops and attracts players from all over the world for the fantastic mix of beaches, iconic architecture, party atmosphere and world class poker.”

The 2013 edition of the event broke all major European Poker records, and eventually saw the two Main Events of 1,798 and 1,234 players respectively award winners Soenke Jahn and Tom Middleton with €169,136 and €942,000 – each player’s largest victory to date.

This year, the EPT has revealed that 20 extra tables will be included to ensure the expected player fields will be covered, and records are broken once again.

Rafael Nadal Claims EPT Charity Challenge

by | Published: Friday, December 13th, 2013

Previously known only for his supreme skills on the tennis court, Rafael Nadal has claimed the PokerStars European Poker Tour Charity Challenge in his Live Tournament debut.

Included as part of the EPT Charity Challenge, a total of €100,000 was up for the taking to donate to a charity of choice, with the minimum set at €5,000 and the highest at a cool €50,000.

Competing with Nadal in the memorable and fun event were Brazilian World Cup winning footballer Ronaldo, Ukrainian footballer Andriy Shevchenko, Legendary striker Alberto Tomba and Dutch field hockey gold medalist Fatima Moreira de Melo, as well as professional Daniel Negreanu.

As expected, Negreanu jumped out to the lead early and quickly compiled a healthy big stack. It did not take long for the game to be turned on its head however, as several competitors managed to double up.

Tomba was the event’s first casualty, as pocket sixes proved no match for a pair of Jacks held by Negreanu, leaving the game with £5,000 for his chosen charity.

Surprisingly, Negreanu was the next player to fall, when Nadal managed to luck out with a pair of Queens against Negreanu’s Ace-Nine hand, also delivering the Spanish Tennis whiz the chip lead.

From there on in, nothing seemed to slow the tirade of Nadal, with Shevchenko quickly feeling a similar pressure to so many of Rafa’s Grand Slam final opponents before busting in third for €10,000, leaving Nadal and de Melo to battle it out in heads-up play.

After some back-and-forth play, Nadal continued to build on his chip lead before finally claiming the title with a hand of Ace-Ten over de Melo’s Ten-six on suit.

Adding his first poker crown to an already extensive trophy cabinet, Nadal secured €50,000 for his charity of choice in impressive fashion and is already weighing up his options for another assault on the felt.
