Ruben Visser has defeated a tough final table to win the 2013 European Poker Tour London Main Event at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino.
The twenty-four-year old took home his maiden European Poker Tour title as well as the first place prize of £595,000.
The final table was stacked with leading poker professionals like Chris Moorman and Theo Jorgensen and Visser said the standard of play was extremely high.
“The table was really difficult, it was a really stacked final table,” Visser said.
With such a talented group of players luck was always going to play be a factor in the final outcome of the event.
Visser got a bit of luck when the tournament was down to six players that he believed was the pivotal hand of the tournament.
“The key hand for me was when we were six handed I won a big flip against Christopher Frank with my pocket nines beating his Ace-King, which was pretty much all-in for me as well and I was really lucky to double there rather than be completely crippled,” Visser said.
“Later on in the tournament I won a big flip against Theo Jorgensen with my Ace-Eight against his pocket fours when I rivered an ace which sent him home and me to the chip lead.”
Visser has had a great deal of success during his poker career but he was delighted to capture his first major tournament victory.
“This means a lot to me,” the Dutchmen said.
“I have some firsts before but they have always been in small tournaments and in my deep runs in major events before I’ve always fallen a few tables short of the big money.
“I enjoy the recognition and all the fun that goes with winning a tournament like this.
“It’s just awesome to finally win a EPT event I’ve played quite a few times and never gotten this close before and it feels really good.”
The European Poker Tour continues next month in Berlin with the event starting on the 17th of April.

It is a big week of tournament poker action with the European Poker Tour London and Asia Pacific Poker Tour Seoul events both taking place.
There are only fifteen players left heading into the fifth day of the European Poker Tour London Main Event with American Steve O’Dwyer the chip leader with 2,279,000 in chips.
O’Dwyer is the only American left in the tournament with the final fifteen a virtual United Nations of Poker.
Three players from the United Kingdom, two from Lebanon and Sweden as well as a representative from Finland, Denmark, Russia, France, Lithuania, Netherlands and Germany remain in the field.
The biggest name left in the field is Team Poker Stars Pro Theo Jorgensen who is well placed in sixth position with 1,474,000 in chips.
Day five of the tournament will commence shortly and play will continue until there are eight players remaining for the final table.
The first starting flight of the 2013 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Seoul Main Event took place at the Paradise Walkerhill Casino and featured 122 players.
After eight action packed levels only fifty players remain in contention with Benjamin Richardson (111,600) and Manami Hayamizu (104,800) holding commanding chip stacks.
A number of big names were unable to progress to the second day of the tournament.
Joseph Cheong started the day poorly when his Aces were cracked by Queens and he never fully recovered before being eliminated well before the end of the days play.
Team Poker Stars Pro Bryan Huang also made the trip to Seoul but never really found his footing and was one of the first players eliminated from the tournament.
The second opening day flight of the event takes place today.

After exchanging banter on Twitter last week Daniel Negreanu has challenged Gus Hansen to a heads-up battle featuring members of Team Pokerstars and Team Full Tilt Poker.
Negreanu will team up with two members of Team Poker Stars while Hansen will have fellow Full Tilt Poker professionals Tom Dwan and Viktor Blom in his corner.
“With Full Tilt Poker back up and Gus being the elder statesmen on the team I thought that maybe we should settle this over the felt,” Negreanu said.
“At the European Poker Tour London Event me – Daniel Negreanu- challenges you – Gus Hansen – and your two cronies to a heads-up battleship style match with me and two members of Team Pokerstars.”
Hansen quickly accepted the offer on Twitter.
“I should probably check with Mr. Blom and Mr. Dwan first, but I have this funny feeling they will make time for this,” Hansen said.
Team Pokerstars is filled with poker talent making Negreanu’s selection a very tough one.
The Canadian said he was tossing up between five highly qualified candidates and asked for the general public’s help in deciding.
The five candidates listed by Negreanu are:
- Vanessa Selbst – Selbst is a high-stakes heads-up specialist and appears the easiest choice. Selbst enjoys publicity so she would likely accept the invitation.
- Jason Mercier – The two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner is considered one of the best all round players in the world and would likely thrive in this format.
- Eugene Katchalov – Negreanu knows first-hand how good Katchalov is heads-up with the American defeating Negreanu heads-up during the 2011 Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure Super High Roller Tournament.
- Bertrand Grospellier – Grospellier is one of the most successful online poker players in history and has an excellent record heads-up.
- Isaac Haxton – Haxton was the not very first player to defeat Viktor Blom in a SuperStar Showdown and has an exception heads-up record.
If they are available Vansessa Selbst and Isaac Haxton appear to be the best choices.
We will keep you up to the date with all the latest from this interesting competition when our coverage of the European Poker Tour London Event starts next week.
