by | Published: Monday, May 20th, 2013

Mike Linster dominated the second day of the World Poker Tour World Championship to finish the session as the clear chip leader.

With sixty-seven players left in the hunt, Linster has 744,000 in chips and is well positioned to add to his inaugural World Poker Title that he won last month in the WPT Jacksonville bestbet Open.

The in-form Dan Shak is currently in second place with 617,300 in chips.

Shak has had a sensational year thus far, winning the Party Poker Party Poker Premier League and cashing in the Pokerstars Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure; 2013 Aussie Millions, WPT Los Angeles Poker Classic and the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific.

Antonio Esfandiari is yet to taste tournament success this year but with 536,100 in chips is well placed to make a deep run in this event.

Esfandiari scored his first major tournament victory in the 2004 Los Angeles Poker Classic and would dearly love to become a duel World Poker Tour winner after coming close on a couple of occasions in the last six months.

As expected a number of big names took advantage of the late registration and entered the tournament during level eight.

Phil Ivey was quickly eliminated and Jason Mercier struggled while Phil Hellmuth capitalized on some aggressive play to be sitting in seventeenth position at the conclusion of the day.

A number of leading pros finished the day with a short stack and will need to play well to get themselves back into the tournament.

Noah Schwartz (36,900), Jonathan Aguiar (49,100), John Hennigan (64,900), Scotty Nguyen (81,500), Daniel Negreanu (124,000), Erick Lindgren (124,100) and Matt Salsberg (130,800) will all need a bit of luck if they are going to become World Poker Tour Champion.

Mike Matusow Wins NBC National Heads-Up Championship

by | Published: Monday, January 28th, 2013

The always controversial Mike Matusow defeated fellow poker veteran Phil Hellmuth to win the 2013 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship at Caesars Palace on Sunday.

Matusow defeated Michael Mizrachi, Viktor Blom, Barry Greenstein, John Hennigan and Scott Seiver before beating Hellmuth in the final to claim the prestigious title and the first place prize of $750,000.

The victory was Matusow’s biggest payday since he made the final table of the 2005 World Series of Poker and his first tournament win the 2010 Florida State Poker Championship.

Matusow was extremely emotional after the victory and thanked all the supporters who had stuck by him.

“And God said let the cards break even… and they did,” Matusow said on Twitter.

“Thanks to all my supporters and fans was such a great win.”

Matusow had tears in his eyes when he accepted the Championship Ring and said he was proud that the victory represented a victory for the old guys.

“Yes, it is just a poker tournament, but it means a lot,” Matusow said.

For guys like me and Phil [Hellmuth], where everyone was making fun and upset that the final was us two, ‘Oh Phil and Mike, what are they doing in the final?’”

“You know what, we are the old guys, but where are the young players? They’re not here. We are.”

Hellmuth was attempting to become the first player to win the NBC Nationals Heads-Up Championship on multiple occasions but was extremely classy in defeat and paid credit to his good friend Matusow.

“The world doesn’t understand how great a guy Mike is,” Hellmuth said.

“I tip my hat to him.”

The NBC National Heads-Up Championship will be televised in March with ratings expected to soar thanks to the deep runs of Matusow and Hellmuth.
