Gregg Wins One Drop High Rollers at the 2013 World Series of Poker

by | Published: Monday, July 1st, 2013

Anthony Gregg more than doubled his career earnings by taking out the One Drop High Rollers No-Limit Hold’em at the 2013 World Series of Poker.

Just like last year’s Big One For One Drop event, the High Rollers tournament drew a star-studded field but Gregg was able to outlast them all and take the first place prize of  $4,830,619 – the second seven figure score of his career after his second place finish in the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event.

Heading into the final day of the tournament there were four players in the hunt for the WSOP bracelet, headlined by 2012 Big One for One Drop Event winner Antonio Esfandiari who was aiming to achieve an amazing double.

Unfortunately for ‘The Magician’ it wasn’t to be and he was eliminated in fourth place by Chris Klodnicki but was still able to add $1,433,438 to the $18 million he won in last year’s charity event.

Amateur poker player William Perkins, who had never previously cashed in a major live poker tournament, was only a few eliminations away from a famous victory but lost the chip lead just four hands after the exit of Esfandiari and was eliminated soon afterwards.

Gregg and Klodnicki were already guaranteed the biggest paydays of their poker career but were both still desperate to win their maiden WSOP bracelet.

Gregg had control of the heads-up battle from the outset and required less than an hour to secure the victory and resign Klodnicki to his third runner-up finish at the World Series of Poker after he finished second to Michael Mizrachi in the 2012 $50,000 Poker Players Championship and runner-up to poker legend Barry Greenstein in the $1,500 Seven Card Razz at the 2008 World Series of Poker.

Gregg said he was delighted to win his first WSOP bracelet in an event sponsored by One Drop and plans on donating part of his prizemoney to the organization that aims to fight poverty worldwide and make safe water accessible to everyone.

A total of $553,278 was donated to One Drop, which came out of the entry fee for all 166 players.

Schwartz has just come back from an extended break from poker and said he well into the tournament feeling mentally and physically fresh.

“After all the years of travelling, wear and tear, just mentally it’s a bit stressful and takes a toll on you so I just wanted to take a break and take some time off,” he said.

“I was really fresh. I’ve been playing a little bit back home in Miami and I’ve just been travelling and enjoying my time with my lovely girlfriend.”

Schwartz wore a hat representing the One Drop charity throughout the tournament and admitted he already has his eye on the next Big One For One Drop tournament.

“I recently became involved with the charity, in support of Guy Laliberté, and I also played the $1 million buy-in Big One For One Drop event,” Schwartz said.

“I was a little disappointed in my performance there so I decided that I was going to wear this hat until One Drop next year.”
