Steven Silverman Takes Out Inaugural WPT Alpha8 High-Roller

The Inaugural World Poker Tour Alpha8 $100,000 buy-in event has been won by Steven Silverman, who defeated 2013 World Series of Poker November Nine chip leader JC Tran in a heads-up battle.

Following seven levels of high quality action, nine players of an original 21 returned on the final day to play to a winner in the event sponsored by ClubWPT.com, exhibiting a winner’s purse of more than $890,000!

The win marked the second high roller victory for Silverman this year, who previously too out the €25,000 High Roller event at the 2013 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final in May for €775,400.

It took only nine hands for the first elimination to occur, when Bill Perkins was beaten all-in by Isaac Haxton, who exhibited a stronger hand of Ace-eight off suit. Perkins departure left 10 players and the official final table was set.

While many players managed to hang in there for at least a while, a constant stream of big loses eventually saw the numbers dwindle to a final four of Silverman, Tran, Jeff Gross and Matt Glantz, all in a position to make an assault on the top prize.

On hand #137, start-of-the-day chip leader Glantz moved all in for 262,000 and was called by Gross, who turned over a much stronger hand of Ace-six to Glantz’s ten-eight to send Glantz to the runner-up bar and set up a three-way showdown.

After Silverman moved over the top of Gross eight hands later, what looked to be the most likely final showdown between the day’s most consistent performers began.

Highlighting the close nature of the whole tournament’s play, the final hand saw Tran Pull a queen-eight, just less than Silverman’s championship hand of Queen-nine. While both players managed two-pair, Silverman’s slightly stronger hand meant the difference of over $300,000 in prize money and of course, the title of inaugural Alpha8 champion.
